Results We present a case series of 48 acquired post-intubation laryngotracheal stenosis cases managed within our Department of ENT Surgery at Farhat Hached Tunisia. Diagnosis relied on imaging and endoscopic findings. Among these cases, 28 exhibited tracheal stenosis, with 60% falling into grade 2–3 severity. Management approaches included sole endoscopic dilation for 17 patients, surgical intervention for 19 patients, and T-tube placement for 10 patients. Conclusions The management of laryngotracheal stenosis poses a challenge for ENT surgeons. Prevention is paramount, encompassing various measures such as employing high-volume, high tracheostomy, and extended intubation practices.","PeriodicalId":321335,"journal":{"name":"The Egyptian Journal of Otolaryngology","volume":"43 8","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135868091","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are the tools that best reflect the patients’ complaints, the severity of their pathology, and the post-therapeutic gains. The aim of the present study is to assess the effect of endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) on quality of life (QoL) among the patients of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP), using the Sino-Nasal Outcome Test 22 items (SNOT-22). Methods This is a prospective, descriptive, and monocentric study involving all the patients who underwent surgery for CRS with nasal polyposis at Bejaia University Hospital over a period of 36 months, from January 1st, 2017, to December 31st, 2019. A SNOT-22 test was completed item by item with our patients, before any surgery, and after endoscopic sinus surgery at 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, and 12 months. Results Sixty-five patients, having undergone ESS for CRS with nasal polyposis, were followed during a period 12 months. The average age of our patients was 42.06 ± 12.47 years, with 41.5% females and 58.5% males. Clinical examination showed that impairment was bilateral in 100% of our patients, while the nasal endoscopy showed that the polyps reached stage III in 87.7% of the cases on the right and 80% on the left. The mean Lund-Mackay CT score was 18.71 ± 4.77/24. All of the patients were treated with local and general short courses of corticosteroid therapy before ESS was indicated. Our results showed improvement in the QoL of our patients and maintenance of this gain after surgery. The average total SNOT-22 score for them was 49.41 ± 17.12 pre-operatively; post-operatively it was 12.14 ± 10.22 after 1 month; 10.31 ± 8.17 after 3 months; 9.35 ± 8.93 after 6 months; 12.21 ± 15.45 after 9 months and 12.63 ± 16.23 after 12 months. Conclusion ESS is the gold standard in the treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis after failure of medical therapy. The use of SNOT-22 test enabled us to confirm that whatever the surgical procedure applied, the QoL improves after surgery.","PeriodicalId":321335,"journal":{"name":"The Egyptian Journal of Otolaryngology","volume":"83 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135221606","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite the high prevalence of vestibular loss and balance impairment in children with SNHL, they are rarely assessed by clinicians and therefore are commonly undiagnosed. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the balance subset of the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test (BOT-2) as a tool to identify vestibular loss in children with SNHL and to determine its predictive values for vestibular loss. Methods The study included 210 children allocated into 4 groups: group 1 (control healthy children), group II (children with SNHL but without vestibular loss), group III (children with SNHL and unilateral vestibular loss), and group IV (children with SNHL and bilateral vestibular loss). Caloric test, video head impulse test (vHIT), and cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (c-VEMP) test were used for vestibular assessment in children with SNHL and to allocate them accordingly into one of the aforementioned groups. Scores of the balance subset of the BOT-2 were compared among the three groups and compared to the control healthy children. Results 21.4% of children with SNHL but without vestibular loss have balance deficit revealed by the balance subset of the BOT-2, reflecting its better sensitivity for detecting balance deficit than the physiologic vestibular tests. Children with unilateral or bilateral vestibular loss (groups III and IV) showed a more significant balance deficit than children without vestibular loss (group II). The worst balance score was found in children with bilateral vestibular loss. The positive predictive value of the BOT-2 for peripheral vestibular loss in children with SNHL was 88%. Conclusion The balance subset of the BOT-2 has particularly good predictive values for vestibular loss in children with SNHL. The test is a simple, easy, fast office test which does not require any costly equipment.","PeriodicalId":321335,"journal":{"name":"The Egyptian Journal of Otolaryngology","volume":"68 6","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135273538","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pediatric septoplasty is highly controversial. Some surgeons are concerned that early surgical intervention before age 17 can adversely affect the normal growth of the nose and face. On the contrary, there is evidence of significant dental, palatal, and facial abnormalities following traumatic damage to the septal cartilage. Therefore, surgical correction of the deviated nasal septum may be performed regardless of the patient’s age. The recommendation of early surgery is based on the explanation that the earlier the correction of septal deviation, the better the outcome of developing normal breath and acceptable facial growth. This study evaluates the nasal and facial bony growth after endoscopic septoplasty for patients below the age of 17 years. Methods This retrospective study reviewed 39 patients who underwent endoscopic septoplasty. The involved patients’ age at surgery was below 17 years old. Postoperative evaluation was done for all patients subjectively using the visual analog scale (VAS) and objectively by endoscopic nose examination. The nasal and facial bony growth were evaluated using lateral cephalometry, which was carried out for each patient when they reached the age of 17. Results Thirty-nine patients underwent endoscopic septoplasty. The median visual analog scale for nose block and headache significantly declined after the procedure significant differences were observed between patients and controls regarding the following parameters: palatal length, anterior skull base, mid-face protrusion, and mid-face length. Conclusion Early endoscopic septoplasty below the age of 17 is a safe procedure and does not compromise the nasal or facial growth when indicated for patients with severe persistent nose block and poor quality of life.","PeriodicalId":321335,"journal":{"name":"The Egyptian Journal of Otolaryngology","volume":"20 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135266848","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, they negatively impact speech perception. Our study investigated how speech perception using the word discrimination score (WDS) was affected by wearing surgical and KN95 masks while dealing with hearing-impaired healthcare recipients. Method This case–control study included 60 participants [15 with normal hearing and 45 with varied degrees of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL)], for whom word discrimination scores (WDS) were evaluated under various mask conditions. Results On applying repeated measures of two-way analysis of variance (RM two-way ANOVA), there was statistically significant interaction ( p = 0.0018), meaning that the level by which the mask affects the WDS depends on the underlying hearing level. Both main factors showed a statistically significant effect ( p < 0.0001). Surgical masks had a lesser impact on speech discrimination compared to KN 95. Conclusions It was concluded that KN95 severely impacted the WDS among all groups relative to surgical mask and the no-mask condition. Although the high-frequency SNHL (HF-SNHL) group had mild hearing loss in the pure tone audiometry (PTA) average, they showed lower WDS relative to the mild to moderate flat SNHL (MM-SNHL). Moderately severe to severe SNHL expressed the worst values. As a result, the surgical mask is recommended over the KN95 mask since it provides better speech discrimination while giving adequate protection. These findings should be taken into consideration as they will have an impact on communication, especially in situations like hospitals where the patients must understand the instructors and healthcare providers very well.","PeriodicalId":321335,"journal":{"name":"The Egyptian Journal of Otolaryngology","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135617686","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Common risk factors include young age (often < 24 months), high values of C-reactive protein and previous antibiotic therapy, previous middle ear infection, or history of ear surgery. The main factor of acute mastoiditis is obstruction of the aditus antrum by granulation tissue or mucosa edema, inhibiting purulent drainage from the mastoid. Retained foreign body in the nose is a rare indirect cause of acute mastoiditis. It may be due to mucosal inflammation and accumulation of secretion causing nasal tract or nasopharyngeal infection leading to otitis media and later manifesting as an intratemporal complication. Case presentation We report a case of acute mastoiditis as a late sequela of retained foreign body in the nose, and we also emphasize the incidental radiological finding of a star-shaped foreign body in the nose, which was a miss during the initial presentation. Further questioning revealed a history of recurrent unilateral blood-stained, foul-smelling nasal discharge, which was left untreated for years, leading to a delayed presentation of acute mastoiditis. After removing the foreign body and broad-spectrum antibiotic administration, complete disease resolution was achieved. Conclusion Although rare, retained foreign bodies of the nose must be ruled out in certain cases of mastoiditis. A thorough history with a high index of clinical suspicion is recommended for early diagnosis to prevent complications.","PeriodicalId":321335,"journal":{"name":"The Egyptian Journal of Otolaryngology","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135994927","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Slicing the cartilage could be a tool to overcome such a feared problem. Objective To compare the healing and hearing outcomes of using sliced cartilage to full-thickness cartilage in type I tympanoplasty. Methods Seventy patients with small to medium-sized central dry tympanic membrane perforation were included in this prospective study. The patients were randomly assigned to one of these two groups: group A: full-thickness cartilage tympanoplasty was done, and group B: partial thickness cartilage tympanoplasty was done. The assessment of healing and hearing was done at 3 and 12 months postoperatively. Results The healing was achieved in 88.2% and 90.9% in group A and group B, respectively. In group A, the mean ABG was 23.44 dB preoperatively and 14.2 dB, and 12.6 dB in the first and second follow-ups, respectively. In group B, preoperative ABG was 23.58 dB compared to 7.9 dB and 6.93 dB in the two follow-ups, respectively. The results were significantly better in group B rather than group A at both follow-ups. Conclusion Hearing results are better when sliced cartilage is used in tympanoplasty type I than full-thickness cartilage.","PeriodicalId":321335,"journal":{"name":"The Egyptian Journal of Otolaryngology","volume":"177 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136115404","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Acute attacks may interfere or hinder daily activities, and hence decrease the quality of life. Accordingly, this study was designed to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of Cinnarizine, Propranolol, and Topiramate as prophylactic treatment for vestibular migraine, in order to decrease the occurrence of acute attacks. Several medications have been proposed as a prophylactic treatment, but their benefit is still a vast field of study. Methods Forty-five subjects were diagnosed with vestibular migraine. They were divided into 3 groups; each group either received Cinnarzine, Propranolol, or Topiramate. All patients were submitted to thorough history taking for headache and vertiginous attacks, Dizziness Handicap Inventory questionnaire (DHI) -Arabic version, visual analog scale , videonystagmography, and computerized dynamic posturography (CDP) before and after receiving the treatment by 3 months. Results Topiramate was significantly superior in reducing the frequency and severity of headache attacks. The three drugs showed improvement but with no significant difference as regards duration and frequency of vertiginous attacks, DHI scores, and CDP. Only 5 patients had non-serious temporary side effects. Conclusions The three drugs were effective for ameliorating vertiginous attacks in vestibular migraine patients, but Topiramate was better in the 25 mg twice daily dose.","PeriodicalId":321335,"journal":{"name":"The Egyptian Journal of Otolaryngology","volume":"120 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135858670","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, findings from previous studies indicate that this procedure may adversely induce anxiety among mothers. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate anxiety among mothers whose babies received a hearing screening at a tertiary hospital in Malaysia. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 105 mothers from a tertiary hospital in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Two questionnaires, the Infant Health Concern Scale (IHCS) and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), were used to measure the mothers’ worry level on a 4-point Likert scale. Mothers were required to complete the questionnaires twice, before and 4 weeks after discharge, regardless of the hearing screening results. Results The STAI scores obtained from mothers whose babies failed the initial screening were significantly higher than mothers whose babies passed. During the initial screening, all mothers rated hearing as the sixth health aspect causing anxiety using the IHCS. However, the ranking fell to 15th place after the second screening. Similarly, mothers whose babies had false positive results also exhibited significantly higher STAI scores and a dropped hearing ranking during rescreening than the initial screening. In addition, mother’s anxiety was not significantly correlated with their education level, family income, or number of births. Conclusion Mothers who participated in this study experienced anxiety regardless of their babies hearing screening results. Therefore, the UNHS program must be reviewed to identify appropriate strategies to minimize this negative emotion among mothers.","PeriodicalId":321335,"journal":{"name":"The Egyptian Journal of Otolaryngology","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136012659","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
