The drive utilizes a total of only eight switches to produce two sets of three-phase sinusoidal output currents. This new scheme minimizes the single-phase current flow through the DC-link capacitors, which is a common problem in reduced switch count topologies. By controlling the phase and magnitude of the currents generated by each inverter it is possible to cancel out the single-phase current flow through the DC-link capacitors. The paper presents a mathematical model of the proposed dual motor drive system including a control strategy that minimizes the capacitor's voltage variations and the single-phase current flow through the DC-link capacitors. In order to verify the performance of the proposed drive system, an application on traction of an electric vehicle is carried out. The simulation results show that the single-phase current flow through the DC-link can be eliminated or minimized when the vehicle moves in a straight-line regime, turning regime, or slippage condition.","PeriodicalId":321042,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of 1998 IEEE Industry Applications Conference. Typically, FIBCs, roughly cubic in shape and constructed from woven polypropylene, are used to store and transport powdered or granular material in loads of between 300 and 1000 kg. In many cases, FIBCs are used in the vicinity of sensitive flammable atmospheres which may arise from the presence of dispersed combustible dusts or solvent vapours. Over the years, there have been a number of serious fires and explosions (particularly during the discharging of the bag contents) which have been attributed to static electricity. As a result various 'antistatic' FIBC designs have been produced containing intrinsic features aimed at minimising the risk of electrostatic ignition. This paper presents the results of a rigorous assessment of a variety of FIBC designs with regard to electrostatic ignition hazard in flammable atmospheres of minimum ignition energy 0.12, 0.25 and 1.5 mJ (the minimum ignition energy of methanol, a common industrial solvent, is 0.14 mJ). The study involved setting up a test rig to enable the FIBCs to be filled and emptied under controlled conditions of relative humidity. During these operations the electrostatic activity in terms of surface potentials, electric field and electrostatic discharge energy was carefully monitored. Incendiary discharges were quantified by using a calibrated propane/oxygen/nitrogen gas probe. The findings of this study indicate which of the designs can be safely used in various industrial processes without risk of ignition.","PeriodicalId":321042,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of 1998 IEEE Industry Applications Conference. The system currents' THD is kept under 5%, and the input power factor is kept above 0.95 throughout the whole operating range. The proposed control scheme uses AC drives with active front-end converters. These are not PWM converters, but phase controlled six-pulse rectifiers using GTO thyristors, and therefore reduce the AC drives' commutation losses, and increase the converter's power handling capabilities. The proposed method produces a multi-pulse operation of the AC drives. This is realized by assigning predefined phase control angles to each drive's rectifier. This induces harmonic cancellation between converters and reduces the total input current distortion. The paper presents the complete analysis of the proposed control scheme, and experimental results used to model the operation of a multi-motor drive. The model is then employed to evaluate the method, and through the results obtained shows the feasibility of the proposed control scheme for multi-motor AC drives.","PeriodicalId":321042,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of 1998 IEEE Industry Applications Conference. In the presented study, a data requisition system is described, which was used for the measurements of corona currents in a pin-plane corona generator of the array type, with pins negative. The pins were made of tungsten and were arranged in two rows. The ground plane was planar, made of aluminum, and equipped with circular current-sensing electrodes made of brass and insulated from the planar anode with teflon rings. Each of the sensing electrodes was connected to 50 k/spl Omega/ resistor. The voltage across each of the resistors was measured with an operational amplifier circuit. The output of the operational amplifier was connected to an electronic scanner, the output of which was used as the input for a microcontroller (HC11, Motorola). The microcontroller was connected via the RS 232 link to an interfacing board inserted into the PCI bus of a personal computer. The computer provided a graphical user interface was used to store and process the collected data, and supported the popular data processing programs. The system allowed the measurements of the current magnitudes on up to sixteen corona pin, simultaneously. The computer interfacing board can parse the data into up to eight separate data streams. The data acquisition unit can be configured to operate with four, eight, or sixteen input channels, trading their number for the sampling rate and frequency response in three steps: 4 channels, 16,000 samples.s/sup -1/; 8 kHz; 8 channels, 8,000 samples.s/sup -1/, 4 kHz; 16 channels, 4,000 samples.s/sup -1/, 2 kHz. In the described experiment, the system was set to sample four simultaneous data streams and provided adequate response. The system operated at the same ground level as the high voltage ground. The cost of the parts used in the unit is approximately fifty dollars. With an appropriate set of sensors, the unit can be used in other high voltage applications.","PeriodicalId":321042,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of 1998 IEEE Industry Applications Conference. The objective is to make it work as a stand alone (not grid connected) generator to produce constant voltage and variable frequency AC current. The IG is based on a three-phase induction machine (IM) exited, simultaneously, by a capacitor bank and a field-oriented controlled inverter. The inverter manipulates the IG excitation currents to control the generated voltage. The capacitor bank is used to minimize the inverter current and to filter voltage harmonics. A laboratory set up was mounted to experimentally validate the proposal. This prototype is based on a 4 kW conventional squirrel cage IM. The inverter uses IGBTs and the controller was implemented using a conventional PC and adequate interfaces. Experimental results are presented to validate the proposed strategy. This system can be used in variable-speed micro wind or hydro power plants where the prime mover operates within a variable speed range to obtain a better efficiency.","PeriodicalId":321042,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of 1998 IEEE Industry Applications Conference. The authors have investigated the basic characteristics in treating particulate matter and acetaldehyde (CH/sub 3/CHO) in a one-pass test using a pulse generator and a plasma-driven catalyst reactor, which are attachable to an air conditioner. In circulation tests, they measured the decrease in acetaldehyde concentration in a closed vessel where this reactor was placed. The removal efficiency of particulate matter and acetaldehyde in one-pass test (residence time of 10 msec) were 70% and 27%, respectively. In the circulation test, the concentration of particulate matter was decreased by 90% after 10 minutes operation and acetaldehyde concentration was decreased by 70% after 50 minutes. It is thought that the TiO/sub 2/ catalyst is excited by plasma-induced high energy particles (electrons, photons, metastable molecules), resulting in an enhancement of pollutant removal. These test results indicate that the combination of plasma with TiO/sub 2/ is a potential alternative in treating pollutants in environmental tobacco smoke (ETS).","PeriodicalId":321042,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of 1998 IEEE Industry Applications Conference. Simulations are performed with an advanced IGBT circuit simulator model for UIS conditions to predict the mechanisms and conditions for failure. It is shown that the conditions for UIS failure and the shape of the anode voltage avalanche sustaining waveforms during turn-off vary with the IGBT temperature, and turn-off current level. Evidence of single and multiple filament formation is presented and supported with both measurements and simulations.","PeriodicalId":321042,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of 1998 IEEE Industry Applications Conference. In this paper, snappy recovery of modern fast power diodes is investigated with the aid of semiconductor device simulation tools, and experimental test results. The work presented here confirms that the reverse recovery process can by expressed by means of diode capacitive effects which influence the reverse recovery characteristics and determine if the diode exhibits soft or snappy recovery behavior. From the experimental and simulation results, a clear view is obtained for the physical process, causes and device/circuit conditions at which snap-off occurs. The analysis is based on the effect of both device and external operating parameters on the excess minority carrier distributions before and during the reverse recovery transient period.","PeriodicalId":321042,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of 1998 IEEE Industry Applications Conference. Some drawbacks of conventional DTC are the generation of relatively large torque ripple in a low speed region and a variation of switching frequency according to the amplitudes of torque and flux hysteresis bands. In this proposed strategy, an optimal switching instant during one switching cycle is calculated for torque ripple minimization which is derived from the RMS torque ripple equation based on an instantaneous torque equation. The proposed strategy improves the performance of the DTC by combining a low torque ripple characteristic in the steady state and the conventional fast torque dynamic characteristic. Experimental results prove the feasibility of the proposed strategy compared with the conventional method.","PeriodicalId":321042,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of 1998 IEEE Industry Applications Conference.
