The primary objective of such a facility is to provide an aid to the testing and commissioning of modern commercial three-phase AC variable speed inverter drives. The experimental test facility comprises a 'DC dynamometer' capable of emulating both linear and nonlinear dynamic mechanical load systems. A detailed description of the control structure employed to create the load emulation is developed. The limitation of practical microprocessor implementation of the control scheme and the restriction that, in order to maintain a flexible test facility, the scheme should operate with no direct measure of torque are explored. The paper also outlines the hardware structure of the experimental rig and experimental results showing good emulation for both linear and nonlinear loads are presented. Operation of the test facility is illustrated with a commissioning example, in which a passenger lift system is emulated, and a test example in which an inverter is tested under a high starting load.","PeriodicalId":321042,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of 1998 IEEE Industry Applications Conference. Only the comparison between a triangular carrier wave and the output three-phase sinusoidal voltages is all of the control scheme needed to obtain the PWM gating signals. As the PWM signal is exactly the same as normal hard switched inverters, the control can be realized quite easily using normal PWM ICs. A carrier frequency of 10 kHz was utilized to implement the prototype system, that works in almost no audible frequency noise, as well as the feature of less EMI operations. A significantly improved sinusoidal current waveform at the output can be obtained compared to conventional inverters even at low modulation factors.","PeriodicalId":321042,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of 1998 IEEE Industry Applications Conference. Contrary to the VSC design methods reported in the literature, the method provides an optimal and systematic design procedure for the selection of the feedback gains and switching vector. By the proposed VSC controller, the speed of a tested DC motor follows a pre-determined speed track to a high degree of accuracy. The proposed controller has been found to be robust against high variations in the motor parameters.","PeriodicalId":321042,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of 1998 IEEE Industry Applications Conference. The frequency control system features a current sensor having an effective internal impedance of as low as 0.25 ohm which is negligible compared with the impedance of the megasonic transducer at the series resonant frequency. The impedance of the inverter load composed of the output transducer, matching capacitor, coaxial cable, megasonic transducer, and current sensor is calculated to determine the frequency control range of the PLL. In accordance with the result of calculation, the performance of the phase-frequency comparator, low pass filter, and VCO is decided. When the RF output power of the MOSFET power inverter was 60 W with a power conversion efficiency of 95%, the frequency control range was 2.8 MHz to 3.2 MHz. The PLL covers the range of frequency shifts and variations in the megasonic transducer and VCO.","PeriodicalId":321042,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of 1998 IEEE Industry Applications Conference. At light load, the proposed system is operated in the DCM; while at heavy load the system is operated in the CCM; thus, the DC-link voltage can be properly controlled to a certain voltage. The overall system is controlled with a pulse width modulation robust control and with a fixed frequency. In the design, the load variation and line voltage variation are treated as plant uncertainties. The H/sup /spl infin// robust control method is adopted to design a proper robust controller to achieve robust stability and robust performance. Finally, a prototype is implemented to verify the effectiveness and feasibility of the analysis and design.","PeriodicalId":321042,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of 1998 IEEE Industry Applications Conference. To optimize the heat management of IGBTs, it provides accurate information about junction temperature. The proposed method requires a few additional passive circuit components for the estimation and it can be easily incorporated into the conventional gate driver circuit. The proposed method consists of two processes, one is off-line characterization of the IGBT under test and the other one is on-line estimation of junction temperature based on the characterized data. The simulation and experimental results confirm the validity of the proposed estimation method.","PeriodicalId":321042,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of 1998 IEEE Industry Applications Conference. The proposed control method is based on the real-time simulation of an LC filter accomplished by a digital signal processor. Thus the proposed active power filter acts equivalently as an LC filter whose circuit parameters, such as the resonant frequency and quality factor, can be adjusted during the operating condition. The adjustment of these circuit parameters realizes the control function of the compensation capability for the individual harmonic components. Thus the adaptive operation of the active power filter according to the condition of the distribution systems can be achieved. To confirm the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy, some experimental results employing a laboratory test system are demonstrated.","PeriodicalId":321042,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of 1998 IEEE Industry Applications Conference. It was found that the oxidative decomposition of benzene was enhanced by concentrating benzene on the Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ pellets and the catalyst pellets. Furthermore, selectivity to CO/sub 2/ in the products from the alumina-hybrid reactor and the catalyst-hybrid reactors was higher than that from the plasma reactor packed with BaTiO/sub 3/ pellets alone. In particular; selectivity to CO/sub 2/ from the catalyst-hybrid reactors using Ag, Co, Cu and Ni/Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ was higher than that from the alumina-hybrid reactor. In addition, the presence of the alumina and catalysts suppressed the formation of N/sub 2/O.","PeriodicalId":321042,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of 1998 IEEE Industry Applications Conference. The internal power density generated by ion bombardment of the cathode and collisions in the plasma is indirectly obtained by matching simulated axial wall temperatures with those obtained by experiment at room temperature. The estimated power density is used to evaluate the temporal evolution of the axial surface wall temperature under different ambient conditions immediately after a cold start. All simulation results have been obtained using PHOENICS, a computational fluid flow program. Experiments have shown a good correlation between the time taken for the light output to reach an acceptable value and the time taken for the inner tube cold spot to reach a temperature of 0/spl deg/C. These results have been used to estimate heating time for different heater geometries and heater powers. The study shows that the conduction of heat to the outer glass envelope is the limiting process that controls the start-up time. Modest improvement in start-up time can be achieved by increasing heating power or by moving the heater to the side of the lamp. However, only a heater which entirely surrounds the lamp is capable of substantially decreasing the start-up time.","PeriodicalId":321042,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of 1998 IEEE Industry Applications Conference.
