METHODS: The questionnaire, elaborated by Graham Mellsop (New Zealand), was translated into Portuguese and sent through mail to 1,050 psychiatrists affiliated to the Brazilian Psychiatry Association. The quantitative analysis is presented elsewhere. RESULTS: One hundred and sixty questionnaires returned (15.2%). From these, 71.1% of the open questions where answered. The most needed and/or desirable qualities in a psychiatric classification were found to be: simplicity, clarity of criteria, objectivity, comprehensibility, reliability, and ease to use. Axis I of the ICD-10 was reported to be the most used due to its instrumental character in addition to being the official classification also for legal and bureaucratic purposes. The DSM-IV was also used in the everyday practice, mostly for education and research purposes, by psychiatrists with academic affiliations. The less frequent use of the multiaxial systems was explained by the lack of training and familiarity, the overload of information and by the fact they are not mandatory. Based on the respondents' answers, we concluded that some diagnostic categories must be revised, such as: mental retardation, eating disorders, personality disorders, sleeping disorders, child and adolescent disorders, affective, and schizoaffective disorders. CONCLUSION: This material offers a systematic overview of the psychiatrists' opinions and expectations concerning the diagnostic instruments used in their daily practice.","PeriodicalId":31894,"journal":{"name":"Boletim Geografico do Rio Grande do Sul","volume":"94 10 1","pages":"112-115"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88059115","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

METHODS: This is a quasi-experimental clinical trial using a quantitative analysis. The convenience sample comprised 32 crack-cocaine-dependent males. These subjects had cocaine as their drug of choice, having used this substance between 2 and 3 weeks prior to the beginning of the treatment, and were able to adequately perform the deep breathing technique. The instruments used were: the Cocaine Craving Questionnaire-Brief (CCQB), the visual analogue scale (VAS), the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and a form containing sociodemographic information and data related to the pattern of consumption of psychoactive substances (SDF). A group intervention was conducted with the administration of the CCQB, the VAS, and the BAI. After that, images related to the use of crack-cocaine were shown to the subjects and the same instruments were administered again. Next, the participants performed the deep breathing technique for 10 minutes, and the instruments were administered one more time. Finally, an individual interview was done and the SDF was completed. RESULTS: Our findings demonstrated a decrease in the scores on the CCQB, the VAS and the BAI after the deep breathing technique was performed in a sample whose profile represents the general pattern of crack-cocaine users. CONCLUSION: In spite of some methodological limitations, the present study suggests that the deep breathing technique is effective in the management of craving and anxiety symptoms in crack-cocaine-dependent patients.","PeriodicalId":31894,"journal":{"name":"Boletim Geografico do Rio Grande do Sul","volume":"48 1","pages":"116-119"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73562658","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

METHODS: An adaptation of the method for validation of instruments was used and it included the following stages: preparation, translation, reconciliation, back translation, revision of back translation, comprehension assessment, review of the results of comprehension assessment and completion, proofreading, and final report. RESULTS: The final Brazilian version has the same number of items as the first English version of the original instrument, and included some enhancements. The adaptation of the alternative instrument developed by the Human Chronobiology Group of Hospital de Clinicas de Porto Alegre, Porto Alegre, Brazil, to the SRM-17 did not show any significant discrepancies and revealed that, in spite of being a generic instrument, it is sensitive to the individual differences regarding the assessment of social rhythm. The Portuguese version showed a satisfactory level of understanding and semantic equivalence. CONCLUSION: A version of an instrument to assess social rhythm adapted to the Brazilian reality is presented in this study. The cross-cultural adaptation process must be completed by validation studies of the final instrument in a larger population sample, which will also be able to evaluate the equivalences related to operation, measures, and functionality.","PeriodicalId":31894,"journal":{"name":"Boletim Geografico do Rio Grande do Sul","volume":"28 1","pages":"120-127"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73204098","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Psychodynamic assessment may provide data for such categorization and, thus, suggest effective pre- and postoperative approach strategies. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify personality structures that may be useful in the postoperative follow-up, as well as additional inclusion and exclusion criteria for the surgical procedure. METHOD: Report of empirical survey conducted during psychotherapy sessions with an open group of patients who underwent bariatric surgery. DISCUSSION: After surgery, patients may experience phases of emotional restructuring, such as an initial phase of feeling triumphant, followed by a phase when there is risk of melancholic behavior and new addictions. We identified three categories of psychological structures: melancholic structure (patients seem to be more likely to develop other postoperative addictive behaviors, mainly eating disorders, since they cannot tolerate the frustration of the loss); dementalized structure (due to the lack of elaborative capacity, patients are unable to reorganize themselves in face of the challenge of keeping their weight under control); and perverse structure (patients comply with the scheduled weight loss; however, their behavior makes the health team experience uncomfortable situations). Establishing psychological categories may be crucial in order to suggest postoperative management strategies, including referral to a psychotherapist with the purpose of providing personalized care, thus increasing specific therapeutic success.","PeriodicalId":31894,"journal":{"name":"Boletim Geografico do Rio Grande do Sul","volume":"7 1","pages":"73-78"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73128105","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Within this context, there is a need of psychological interventions aimed at helping parents to adapt their psychic representations with the purpose of avoiding projections and conflicts in order to promote the infant's physical and psychic development. In this sense, the present study investigated the impact of a short-term mother-infant psychotherapy on the maternal representations of the infant's development when the infant had a cardiac malformation. METHODS: The short psychotherapy process (24 sessions) of a mother-infant pair is reported. The authors describe how the issue of life and growth changes throughout treatment. RESULTS: The results evidenced several changes in the maternal representations of the infant, as well as the mother's attitude regarding the search of information on malformation and child care. CONCLUSION: The results emphasize the benefit of short mother-infant psychotherapy for the context of infant's malformation, mainly for the maternal representations of the infant's development.","PeriodicalId":31894,"journal":{"name":"Boletim Geografico do Rio Grande do Sul","volume":"38 1","pages":"95-104"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74422087","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

METHODS: Forty-five HIV positive youths from three health care centers located in the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre, whose mean age was 18.7 years (standard deviation = 2.7), participated in this study. The following assessment instruments were used: a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Multidimensional Life Satisfaction Scale for Adolescents, the Network of Relationships Inventory, the Coping Strategies Inventory and the Neuroticism Factorial Scale. Data obtained with these instruments were analyzed using multivariate analysis of variance and covariance and linear multiple regression. RESULTS: Young HIV carriers present high life satisfaction, although there is a decrease in satisfaction with friendships. As far as coping strategies are concerned, the means between coping strategies were similar. High levels of neuroticism were evidenced in the sample, especially in terms of depression, which was the best predictor of global life satisfaction for the sample. CONCLUSIONS: We were able to identify the main difficulties of this group of HIV carriers, and, based on these findings, it will be possible to develop effective intervention programs.","PeriodicalId":31894,"journal":{"name":"Boletim Geografico do Rio Grande do Sul","volume":"97 1","pages":"51-59"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80238280","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
