Many aspects of these changes are promising for the people concerned, but the transition also involves some difficulties and challenges for them as well as for health and social services. The article presents one man's experience of life in hospital and discusses the need to ensure that adequate support services are provided for people like him, to maintain them satisfactorily in their new way of life.

First year students in the School of Education at Hatfield Polytechnic, following an initial teacher education course in “The Education of Children with Special Needs”, were involved in using the approach within experimental workshops in a hospital school setting. The students' evaluation of the workshops suggests they may have a useful contribution to make in the training of staff involved in working with people with such learning difficulties.

Part one, a retrospective study of hospital records, provided data on their lives before they moved. A detailed account of their current life styles was compiled from data from social services records, interviews with social workers, and interviews with the people themselves. \u0000 \u0000 \u0000 \u0000Hospital records varied in their completeness but they did describe the people's personalities (personal qualities and motivation), close friendships, outside social contacts, and daytime activities. This article relates the frustrations and delays experienced by one such project and, in particular, the effects on five people who were the first due to move into a home of their own within the project. The article argues that staff working on such schemes should acknowledge that such delays are very likely and do all they can to minimise the effects on the residents involved.
