The project entailed fortnightly afternoon sessions, generally held at the first school. Each session encompassed some whole group singing and language games, plus art and craft activities. The latter were highly structured and involved pairs of special and mainstream children working on cooperative tasks. The results of the project from the points of view of special and mainstream children, staff, and parents are considered. Implications, particularly those relating to organisation of integration experiences, are discussed.","PeriodicalId":318604,"journal":{"name":"Journal of The British Institute of Mental Handicap (apex)","volume":"147 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123482393","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The socialisation patterns of 18 adults with mental handicaps and 32 adults without handicaps in Gort, a small town in the West of Ireland, were surveyed. The results indicate that although adults with mental handicaps living in a small town engage in most of the same activities as their non-handicapped peers, they tend to do so in groups of three or more, often in the company of a houseparent or relative, whereas adults who are not mentally handicapped engage in the same activities either alone or with one other friend. This difference seems to result in the people with mental handicaps making less new social contacts than people who are not handicapped.","PeriodicalId":318604,"journal":{"name":"Journal of The British Institute of Mental Handicap (apex)","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129982611","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although a wide range of team models exists, many common features were found. The high level of commitment and importance of the All Wales Strategy as a reference point were highlighted. The setting up of CMHTs and the development of new services by team members has increased the possibility of providing appropriate and individualised service packages. Many teams, however, are still in the early stages of development and major gaps sometimes exist, such as establishing individual programme plans and review systems. Major issues emerging are the role of community nurses in CMHTs, the management and accountability of multidisciplinary teams, the level of team autonomy, and changes in professional roles.","PeriodicalId":318604,"journal":{"name":"Journal of The British Institute of Mental Handicap (apex)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123785186","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
