The rationale and format of a programme for improving language comprehension skills in mentally handicapped children is described and is viewed alongside some of the commercial materials available. The strengths and weaknesses of the commercial programmes are discussed and the programme described is seen as a means of overcoming some of the problems presented by these, and adopting a more individual approach. The components of the programme are described showing the means of implementation from its inclusive assessment through to the choice of method and materials to be used by the class teacher. An approach to record keeping specifically aimed at the language comprehension programme is described and illustrated.","PeriodicalId":318604,"journal":{"name":"Journal of The British Institute of Mental Handicap (apex)","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127228272","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The story of sterilisation is traced over the century. An attempt is made to understand the evolution of the legal aspects of sterilisation, from a rather paternalistic/eugenic standpoint in the early 1900's to a more humanistic one in the present day, as evidenced in contemporary court decisions. A comprehensive system of analysing the various components of sterilisation referral is suggested.","PeriodicalId":318604,"journal":{"name":"Journal of The British Institute of Mental Handicap (apex)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127658900","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
