Activity periods using room management procedures can be adopted to raise the levels of activity for adult long stay hospital residents. The approach can be valid as part of longer term change strategies. Concern is expressed about its use, the demands placed on staff, training needs, and the function it serves. Consideration should be given to the wider context and development encouraged in other ways according to the setting. Room management can provide opportunities for interdisciplinary approaches to common problems.","PeriodicalId":318604,"journal":{"name":"Journal of The British Institute of Mental Handicap (apex)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129745921","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was hypothesised that their general social interaction skills would improve as a consequence of teaching them these three specific self-help or “community living” skills (Marholin et al., 1979). Pre- and post-measurements on the AAMD Adaptive Behavior Scales, and on an observational scale (TAF) devised by the author, showed that this prediction was fulfilled. There were also clear improvements in the three taught skills although these were not always statistically significant. The trainees' level of confidence (as measured by the TAS) also showed improvement, with increasing independence in using these public facilities. Since this study, three more groups at the ATC have started using the same assessment and training methods.","PeriodicalId":318604,"journal":{"name":"Journal of The British Institute of Mental Handicap (apex)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124481474","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the outset an attempt was made to anticipate possible problems and to identify ways in which these might be avoided. Despite this, a wide variety of minor difficulties were encountered relating to all aspects of the group. The identification and discussion of these problem areas has been one of the major ways in which the authors have learned from this work, and from which others wishing to set up similar groups might benefit.","PeriodicalId":318604,"journal":{"name":"Journal of The British Institute of Mental Handicap (apex)","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117627536","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
