The number of occupied beds is found to be a significant determinant of costs, and becomes increasingly important as the residents become younger or more dependent. In general, a ward in which the majority of residents are young or dependent minimises its costs when 24 beds are occupied; but the least cost size for wards in which all residents are heavily dependent may be less than 10 beds.","PeriodicalId":318604,"journal":{"name":"Journal of The British Institute of Mental Handicap (apex)","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128715864","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The intervention included cognitive-behavioural methods such as self-evaluation, self-regulation and problem-solving training. The use of hand signs were found to be particularly useful as prompts for the four core aspects of assertion and participants were observed to use them as self-regulation cues in their day-to-day life. It was generally found that according to self-reports, attendance to the group had beneficial effects. The self-report measures employed in this study were considered to be valid and reliable for all but one of the participants.","PeriodicalId":318604,"journal":{"name":"Journal of The British Institute of Mental Handicap (apex)","volume":"39 8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123379724","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some recent work, which attempted to replicate Azrin and Foxx's (1971) intensive toilet training programme, but in a community setting, concluded that this programme is not feasible in such a setting. The present paper presents data for just such an intensive toilet training programme carried out with an eleven-year-old boy with a profound mental handicap in the community. The programme has been found to be highly effective, both in institutional and community settings. Differences between the use of parents as trainers and ‘professional’ trainers are discussed, as are problems of generalisation and maintenance of newly learned skills in a community setting.","PeriodicalId":318604,"journal":{"name":"Journal of The British Institute of Mental Handicap (apex)","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121052401","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This involved the development of software (computer programmes written with regard to their special learning needs) and hardware (accessories to allow control of a programme for people unable to operate a standard microcomputer keyboard). A key feature of MICROMATE software is its ability to individualise activities – task difficulty being automatically adjusted in line with the level of performance of each individual – so providing an effective means of structuring learning and a mechanism for maintaining interest and attention over extended periods. The success of MICROMATE in a variety of settings has indicated that microcomputers are likely to become a powerful resource in work with people with severe mental handicaps.","PeriodicalId":318604,"journal":{"name":"Journal of The British Institute of Mental Handicap (apex)","volume":"88 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121366194","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
