Apple and Google, two of the most valuable companies in the world, are prime examples of this new reality. Driven mostly by novel advances in science and technology, these global brands have significantly changed our way of life. This awareness is now forcing countries around the world to seek new ways to keep up with this ever-evolving economy. These countries also agree to the concept of scientific innovation being synonymous to higher education. Therefore, in order to remain competitive in a globalized market, developing countries in particular are now called upon, to train a new cadre of future workers to a higher standard. Training skilled workers and making them available to the wider economy have become a daunting challenge for the developing world. Case in point, the oldest university in the Americas, Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo UASD, just received its first patent in 2020, after more than 500 years of existence. For too long, higher education has been assigned a relatively low priority, as one of the major economic sectors in the Dominican Republic, the tourism and hospitality industry, does not require highly technical trained workers. By any measure, making the leap from teaching to research intensive universities is not a small task for the Dominican government, especially, considering their current situation of chronic underfunding, underpaid faculty, and underdeveloped curricula. With an everincreasing student population, institutions of higher learning in the Dominican Republic can barely maintain their current position, let alone catch up to the MITs and Oxfords of the world, which are constantly raising the stakes. Here we propose a few scenarios that may help academic institutions in the Dominican Republic or the developing world as a whole, increase their potential of promoting growth and economic development in this global economy.","PeriodicalId":31806,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Education","volume":"27 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81739864","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The pandemic changed the way people lead their lives – switching from traditional teaching (face-to-face) in a public setting to online teaching due to social distancing. The teaching system was forced to accommodate distance learning during COVID-19 to complete academic studies. As a result, some Gulf countries found it difficult to implement distance learning and blended learning due to a lack of infrastructure and other challenges and difficulties. In online teaching, to adequately meet the individual needs of students, effective communication and cooperation between the teacher and the student is required. Thus, this research seeks to determine the differences in teaching and learning during COVID-19. The major aim is to determine how teaching and learning occurred before COVID-19 and how effective they were during COVID-19. This paper studies teachers' use of multimodality in teaching and their perceptions, knowledge, and experiences before and during COVID-19. It also explores the implications and impact of using multimodality in teaching in line with technology before and during COVID-19. Additionally, it investigates the opinion of the teachers regarding their students' interpretation and interaction with multimodality.","PeriodicalId":31806,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Education","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83535937","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is an analytical descriptive study based on document analysis. By the mid of 2011, 81% constitutions of the world guaranteed or aspired to protect the right to primary education. Nepal and India both have clear constitutional provisions for right to free and compulsory basic education but are unable to fulfil the international and national educational commitments and goals. India and Nepal fall in 2nd and 48th rank respectively based on population in the world in 2018. However, educational indicators indicate that both the countries could not ensure the educational access to all the children. In the year 2014-15, 22.131 million children were either not enrolled or did not complete primary education in India. This number was 270 958 in Nepal in the same year. Results show that there is a wide gap between the educational policies and their actual implementation in India and Nepal.","PeriodicalId":31806,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Education","volume":"11 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82137960","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article is supposed to serve two purposes: as a proof of applicability of the test to first year medical students outside the United States and as a general survey of our students’ understanding of gravity. The motivation for this work came initially from students’ misconceptions of gravity and related topics noticed in classrooms. NGCI has 26 multiple-choice questions probing students’ knowledge of gravity in four different domains: Directionality, Gravity as a force, Independence from other forces and threshold. Results confirmed weak overall performance of the 684 students participated in this study (average score of only 38.48%) with misconceptions related to gravity in all four domains. We were able to prove the applicability of the NGCI to our students through calculations of Classical Test Theory statistics and Cronbach’s alpha. We got a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.68, average difficulty index of 0.62 and average discriminatory index of 0.31 with three questions reported as too difficult based on the acceptable range. The test was given to students twice; before and after any gravity-related instructions in class (pre- and post-test). Post-test results will not be discussed here and left for future articles. In this article, we present the pre-test results and compare it to the original work by the authors of the test on astronomy and physics students.","PeriodicalId":31806,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Education","volume":"5 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89440271","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While undergoing academic activities in higher education, late adolescents often experience various academic stresses. To deal with these, late adolescents need to communicate with their parents as their closest relatives. This way, they can get positive support to be more motivated and responsible in academic activities. Late adolescents - parents good communication may also reduce learning burnout and depression. However, the types of communication that occurred are not as expected. It does not provide the right solutions, and it makes late adolescents feel judged, unrespected and even causes conflicts. Therefore, parents and adolescents need to know the fundamental element to develop effective communication between them. Through literature review as the preliminary research conducted to determine what elements can develop effective communication, findings showed that mindfulness is the fundamental element in developing effective communication between parents and their late adolescents who are experiencing academic stress in higher education.","PeriodicalId":31806,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Education","volume":"28 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84420520","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Studies have proved the significant contribution of Self-regulated learning (SRL) in academic success. This current study sought to understand and describe students’ perceptions and behavior in response to online teaching instructions designed in the light of SRL theories. The instructional support was designed following the principles of SRL from a social cognitive researcher. Twenty-five undergraduate students participated in this study. The data was obtained from questionnaires, tests, and observation. The learning activities were conducted in an E-learning platform provided by the university, google form, and virtual meeting. The results from the questionnaire showed that explicit instructional supports effectively encouraged students to employ SRL skills in their learning process. Albeit, the data from observation described that only some of the SRL skills were acquired and developed during online instructions and some skills still needed time to develop due to the fact that students were at the first level of SRL. The students in this study still need more exercises and practices to support them in continually developing their SRL skills. In future intervention, students should be trained to acquire self-assessment and task-selection skills. This study suggests providing explicit instructional support to assist university students with low level or minimal SRL capacity in developing SRL capacity.  ","PeriodicalId":31806,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Education","volume":"127 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77326022","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To answer the topic raised, researchers chose the study using a qualitative approach because researchers want to know in-depth about the phenomenon that actually occurs in schools. In the process of analyzing data, researchers used the help of the NVivo program to find the output of data reduction, field records, and documentation studies. Peer Foster Student Program (PFS) itself is a movement to build awareness among students in Banyuwangi. The management is done from students, by students, and for students in the school. Assistance programs were between students to foster a sense of care and divided love. This activity was carried out by the establishment of a group of managers from students to raise voluntary funds from all students in the school that will be distributed to the recipient students in the form of school supplies. The formation of mutual character values through peer foster student programs is carried out by fostering the value of caring, helping, responsible, cooperative, helping to achieve common welfare goals. Through this program, the value of gotong royong (communal work) character is seen and becomes an essential concern for the future provision of learners when plunged directly into the vast ocean in public life.","PeriodicalId":31806,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Education","volume":"9 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91082765","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Facing this unprecedented condition, many teachers have experienced confusion in switching to appropriate roles in order to engage their students in the learning process. This study explores Indonesian EFL teachers’ roles during online teaching activities and possible challenges in having teaching practices amid pandemics. Data for this qualitative study were generated from virtual classroom observations, field notes and semi-structured interviews of two high school teachers. Borrowing the lens of Alvarez et al. (2009) and Harmer (2007) for analysis, the study identified different design/planning, social and cognitive roles of Indonesian EFL teachers such as controller, prompter and resource. While exploring more relevant roles, teachers also faced some constraints in running online teaching practices like poor internet connection and the lack of face-to-face interaction during the process of teaching and learning practices. In conclusion, Indonesian EFL teachers can still perform designer/planning, social and cognitive roles. However, their specific roles are limited to controller, prompter and resource only due to the obstacles involved in the virtual classrooms.","PeriodicalId":31806,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Education","volume":"374 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83764774","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While there is limited support available for children with RWD and their parents in Mauritian schools, research may reveal areas of parental need that speech-language therapists may address. The aim was to determine parents’ perspectives regarding their Grade 4 children with RWD in mainstream government schools in Mauritius. Teachers identified children with RWD with the Screening Tool for Learning Disorder, and parents were requested to participate in the study. Sixty-seven parents completed a questionnaire investigating their perspectives on the symptoms and causes of their child’s RWD and the ways in which they assist their child. The screening tool differentiated between children at risk of specific learning disorder (SLD) and children who indicated clear symptoms of SLD. The results of the tool did not correspond closely with the participants’ satisfaction with their child’s academic performance. The majority of participants could, however, identify RWD in their children when descriptions were given. Parents mostly cited laziness as the main cause of their child’s RWD. The results showed that participants had limited information about the causes and symptoms of RWD and SLD. There is a lack of awareness about the role of speech-language therapists in the intervention of RWD. There are limited resources and support for children with RWD, despite an inclusive education policy in Mauritius. Speech-language therapists and teachers should collaborate to support children with RWD and their parents using inclusive education strategies.","PeriodicalId":31806,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Education","volume":"34 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83682081","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A large number of research studies concerning mobile-LMS have been done in the past decades. Studies have also demonstrated that the use of mobile LMS can facilitate the users as it can be conveniently accessed anywhere with their mobile phones. However, those studies have not comprehensively discussed the results of the students' mobile-LMS on their self-regulated learning development. Hence, this research aims to investigate the use of mobile learning management systems, specifically mobile Moodle, to support the students' self-regulated learning. An ex-post-facto research study was used to gather the respondents' data after they experienced the mobile Moodle and the relationship to the SRL development. The respondents were 15 students from English Education Master Program, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Further, the questionnaires and interviews were used to gather and analyze the data. The results showed that most of the graduate students were facilitated by the use of mobile Moodle to develop their self-regulated learning. The result showed that the features, namely, upcoming events, messages, and chats, positively related to the students’ SRL construction. However, the participants highlighted the easiness of using reminder and notification features since some of the students cannot receive the notification directly to their phones. Thus, the mobile Moodle developer should improve it to maximize its benefit in influencing students’ SRL.","PeriodicalId":31806,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Education","volume":"50 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86708685","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
