Measurement of inflammatory markers like CRP will improve the prediction of the risk of these events. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between hemoglobin A1c, one of the indicators of diabetes, and the highly sensitive C-reactive protein, one of the indicators of inflammation.\u0000Materials and Methods: This prospective observational study was carried out in the Department of Pathology, Patan Hospital. This study included each 154 subjects of Type 2 diabetic patients and healthy control. Statistical analysis was done using Pearson’s correlation test and data was expressed as mean ±SD for each parameter. A p-value of < 0.05 was considered to be significant.\u0000Results: Most (57.7%) of the patients were between 40 to 60 years with a female preponderance of (0.5:1). The HbA1c and CRP values were high in the case group compared to the control group and analysis shows statistical significance. There was a statistically significant association between CRP level in the diabetic group (patient with HbA1C greater than 5.7%) than in the control group (patient with HbA1C equal to or less than 5.7%) (p- Value=0.005).\u0000Conclusions: Higher HbA1c levels are associated with increased CRP, demonstrating that poorly controlled diabetes mellitus is associated with increased systemic inflammation. Timely screening and early detection of elevated CRP in diabetes mellitus patients can prevent further complications and consequences.

This study evaluates whether thresholds of eosinophils in stroma serve as a morphological marker for the presence of tumor invasion in squamous neoplasms of the cervix.\u0000Material and methods: Sixty-five cases of invasive squamous cell carcinoma and preinvasive squamous neoplasia were evaluated. In each case, the number of eosinophils per HPF and per 10 HPF in the tissue adjacent to the neoplastic epithelium was counted. For statistical purposes, the elevated eosinophils were categorized as > 3 eosinophils/HPF, > 5 eosinophils/HPF, and >10/10 HPF.\u0000Results: Stromal eosinophils were present in 1/5 cases of LSIL, 3/8 HSIL cases, 15/16 cases of microinvasive squamous cell carcinoma, and 34/36 cases of invasive squamous cell carcinoma, signifying an increase in eosinophil count from a spectrum of preinvasive to invasive carcinoma. Greater than 5 eosinophils/HPF and >10 eosinophils/10 HPF had sensitivity, specificity, and positive predictive values of 55%, 100%, 100%, and 75%, 100%and 100%, respectively. The difference of >5eosinophils/HPF and >10eosinophils/10 HPF between SIL and SCC was statistically significant.\u0000Conclusions: Our study suggests that the presence of increased eosinophils in squamous neoplasia of the cervix can be associated with tumor invasion and should prompt a thorough evaluation when evidence of invasion is absent.

Blood culture is the gold standard procedure to confirm sepsis. However, the rapid rate of disease progression makes its timely diagnosis and prompt management very crucial before the availability of culture. The study aimed to determine the significance of complete blood count parameters including platelet indices in diagnosing neonatal sepsis.\u0000Materials and Methods: This study included 129 suspected cases of neonatal sepsis admitted to KIST Medical College Teaching Hospital from 15th April 2018 to 14th April 2019. Complete blood count, platelet indices, micro erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, and blood culture were performed and analyzed.\u0000Results: Of 129 suspected neonatal sepsis, abnormal leukocyte count was encountered in 31 (24.0%) patients. Culture-proven sepsis was seen in 25 (19.1%) patients. The sensitivity and specificity of Neonatal Sepsis Screening Criteria were 10.0% and 80.0% respectively.\u0000Among platelet-derived indices, PDW (full form) had a sensitivity of 80% and specificity of 56% with a cut of 17.02 CV. MPV (full form), with a cut-off value of 9.78 fL had a sensitivity of 88 % with a specificity of 59%.
