The connection with the full (quantum mechanical) gain, G, is such that ∊/G is equal to the ratio of the total photon energy to the kinetic electron-beam energy “trapped” in the interaction volume V. Both ∊ and G are discussed quantitatively, using the example of a quantum model of the Smith-Purcell FEL: it is shown that unlike G, ∊ depends on the total photon energy trapped in V even in the classical regime.","PeriodicalId":314918,"journal":{"name":"1983 Eighth International Conference on Infrared and Millimeter Waves","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130342951","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A large interaction filling factor can occur for moderate-energy electrons (∼ 80 keV) spiralling around the rod within the evanescent region of a dielectric waveguide mode. Since the magnetic field strength is reduced by an order of magnitude in an interaction at the tenth harmonic of the cyclotron frequency, a submillimeter-wave gyrotron is now truly feasible because the acceleration voltages can be conveniently produced by DC power supplies.","PeriodicalId":314918,"journal":{"name":"1983 Eighth International Conference on Infrared and Millimeter Waves","volume":"200 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121533588","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
