Related to the above reasons Zamalek suffers from lack of space for parking, traffic congestion, lack of traffic management and pedestrian movement problems. These problems started appearing after the 1952 revolution when a lot of the privately owned residences were nationalized and turned into Governmental and National institute schools. This transformation in Land use had drastic negative impacts on the whole district & building that will be explained thoroughly. The research listed down the Governmental and National Institute Schools in Zamalek, as well as the number of students that are enrolled in these schools. It also studied the Zamalek population and especially the school age bracket and whether they go to these schools or not. Arc GIS software was used to define the zone of service for each school in order to evaluate whether there is a lack or surplus in different categories of schools. A questionnaire was distributed over the Zamalek residents to help evaluate the educational service in this district. Finally, the researchers propose recommendations that could save both the state authorities and the community a lot, and could be applied to other similar districts, such as Maadi, Heliopolis and Garden City.","PeriodicalId":31454,"journal":{"name":"HBRC Journal","volume":"17 1","pages":"201 - 230"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/16874048.2021.1923897","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43752700","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Urban waterways, and their adjacent urban areas, have been typically the main concern of these strategies. Urban waterfronts, although often sites of heavy development, are rarely designed to reflect the innate human need for contact with nature, commonly known as ‘Biophilia’. Within this context, the main objective of this paper is to explore biophilic indicators in Central Cairo’s waterfront, under the guidelines of ‘Biophilic Urbanism’ approach, which expands the practice of biophilia on the scale of cities and urban areas. The paper follows an analytical case study approach. Methods of data collection included a literature review, on-site observations, concurrent with semi-structured interviews when possible, and an online survey. An in-depth analysis of data was then carried out to assess the degree of integration of the Nile waterfront within the urban fabric of the city to identify biophilic perceptions in the waterfront. Results demonstrate that users of the Nile waterfront are rarely allowed physical access to the water. Visual access is mostly provided, with minor exceptions. Other cross-cutting findings indicate a lack of longitudinal and lateral social connectivity to the waterfront, lack of continuous appropriate pedestrian trails, and a general lack of green spaces and public amenities.","PeriodicalId":31454,"journal":{"name":"HBRC Journal","volume":"17 1","pages":"19 - 39"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/16874048.2021.1872052","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47196673","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Another aspect of museums, which is perhaps less well known, is the way it interacts with its objects. After the exhibition, the objects are waiting for an unknown destiny. This is perhaps because some under the title of “ auction “ sought to sell them, trying to prevent them from forgetting. In Iran, this type of collision is very novel and different. The necessary design of the auction as a multi-functional building is undeniable. Further research shows that public spaces can contribute to creating a meaningful context for future heritage and to increasing their influence in societies to provide a context for future developments.","PeriodicalId":31454,"journal":{"name":"HBRC Journal","volume":"17 1","pages":"157 - 175"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/16874048.2021.1916861","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45452209","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Urban markets play a vital part in securing daily access to food; thus, it is crucial to keep them operating safely during pandemic. The paper starts by discussing socioeconomic implications of pandemic in the urban realm in general and in markets in particular. Guidelines for designing markets are briefly reviewed, followed by guidance provided by responsible organizations for operating markets safely during pandemic. The paper demonstrates some of the solutions and ideas applied and suggested worldwide to avoid the consequences of markets’ shutting down, then it introduces the case study: Tablita market as one of the enclosed urban markets in Cairo, Egypt, the market’s situation during pandemic is studied through observation, structured and unstructured interviews with vendors. The results from market observation and interviews show some of the socioeconomic implications of COVID on the market as well as the behavioral challenges that require innovative solutions to force the adherence to protection measures. Accordingly, the paper suggests applicable short-term and long-term solutions for Tablita market redesign in the light of these implications, challenges and protection measures that can also be applied in similar cases in Cairo to help markets operate safely and avoid severe consequences of lockdown.","PeriodicalId":31454,"journal":{"name":"HBRC Journal","volume":"17 1","pages":"255 - 287"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/16874048.2021.1936970","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45981659","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As environmental influenced contributes to design decisions, to save energy and to achieve the sustainable development indicator according to Egypt Vision 2030. This can be achieved by accessing the maximum of daylight, consequently the facade design has a major impact on daylight performance. This paper aims to evaluate the daylight performance by using dynamic shading, in a university classroom in Egypt. It also aims to determine the optimal angle for each hour of the shade’s movement. Based on LEED 4 daylight requirements and IES, daylight analysis was integrated using DESIGNBUILDER V6, RADIANCE, and DAYSIM programs. The simulation measured the basic case of the case study and then compared it with using dynamic shading system. Incrementing the efficiency of daylight needs to increase spatial daylight autonomy (SDA) and reduce annual sunlight exposure (ASE); hence, the importance of this research is to take up studies of spatial daylight autonomy (SDA), annual sunlight exposure (ASE), useful daylight illuminance (UDI), working plan, and daylight factor over a year. This paper proved the necessary of using dynamic shading system. As it helped in changing the angle of inclination shading system with change the angle of inclination the sun on the openings of the building. It adapted the change from the educational activity (the whiteboard and data shown) in the case study. If the opening has wide areas in the eastern facade, the overall value of illumination at 9 a.m. is much higher than at 3 p.m. When using dynamic shades, the daylight efficiency is raised, in detail, by UDI, ASE, and the daylight factor raised by 58%, 45%, and 4.3%, respectively. This research will help architects and decision-makers to improve lighting performance in existing university buildings. It also achieved visual comfort in the classroom.","PeriodicalId":31454,"journal":{"name":"HBRC Journal","volume":"17 1","pages":"177 - 200"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/16874048.2021.1920138","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48402516","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research aims to provide a methodology for assessing the most appropriate ways to develop remote areas and to apply this methodology to different remote areas in Egypt to measure their effectiveness. The methodology of the research depends on the theoretical, analytical and applied approach; the theoretical approach reviews the definition of remote areas, and then studies the elements of sustainable infrastructure in remote areas, concludes criteria for assessing sustainable infrastructure in remote areas, then uses the analytical approach to analysis three remote areas in Egypt, which are Shali in Siwa Oasis, Basaysa in South Sinai, and the village of Wadi Rayyan in Fayoum, then applies approach to apply the checklist on these areas. The research concludes that the new Basaysa village achieves the highest infrastructure sustainability assessment, Rayan Valley has the lowest infrastructure sustainability rating as a remote area. As for Siwa Oasis – after the success of the Al-Babenshal Hotel experience, and Adrère Amellal – infrastructure sustainability has been published in all service buildings, such as Banque du Cairo. On the other hand, design principles and guidelines issued by local authorities to control and guide the new architectural intervention in these areas focusses on character, expression and façade’s detailing. Yet, the new architectural intervention in historically sensitive contexts has not been researched at the level of humanistic approach with its socio-cultural and economic implications. This research aims to tackle this issue and establish principles and guidelines for dealing with new architectural intervention in these contexts through a humanistic approach with its reflections on the physical and nonphysical aspects. The research aims also to answer the question; are design guidelines issued by local authorities for historic areas adequate in capturing the difficult questions of integrating new and historic buildings. To attain the research objectives and answer its questions, an in-depth field study carried out at MSA University in historic Cairo is analyzed, investigated and discussed. Through this analysis and investigation, the intervention approaches are examined and assessed to establish principles and guidelines that could be followed in dealing with the issue of new architectural intervention. The case study analysis is guided by significant principles that followed in a relevant project in old Cairo that received international recognition and awarded the Aga Khan Award for Architecture for its perfect integration with the historic context. The research also examines and discusses the appropriateness of the design guidelines issued by local authorities in historic Cairo to deal with the new buildings. Hence, several studies have considered the mechanisms to remove and replace mitigation in the past. This research represents an analysis of the efficiency of cemented stabilized soil replacement for improving the behaviour of weak soil. On the other hand, the optimum design for foundation depends on the soil properties beneath these foundations. One of the best solutions for this challenge is to increase the shear parameters and reduce the compressibility for the foundation soil using cemented sand mixture technique. An experimental program was conducted to study the impact of cement stabilization on the geotechnical characteristics of sandy soils, furthermore, five cement ratios (3%, 5%, 7%, 10% and 15% by dry weight of sand) have been mixed with sandy soil and tested under compaction and shearing. The results illustrated that the maximum dry unit weight of sand increases with the increase in cement content whereas the optimum moisture content decreases marginally with the increase in the cement content. In addition, increasing cement content leads to an increase of cohesion, friction angle and Young’s modulus. This paper is considered a serious attempt to estimate the optimum cement ratio required to improve the mechanical properties of soil replacement under a strip footing. Numerical modelling for this footing was done by Plaxis software. The results illustrated that adding the cement mixture improves the behaviour of footing. The effect of the replacement extension on the strip footing is also analyzed, where; the results indicated that the optimum replacement extension is equal to the thickness of replacement. This study is based on the limitation of the herein proposed numerical model and its properties.","PeriodicalId":31454,"journal":{"name":"HBRC Journal","volume":"17 1","pages":"1 - 17"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/16874048.2020.1863050","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43793166","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present contribution evaluates the effects of ore nanoparticles namely ilmenite and bentonite on the engineering properties and performance of asphalt binder. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) micrograph was used to characterize the investigated nanomaterials. The nanoparticles were blended with asphalt binder with different percentages (0–5% for ilmenite and 0–10% for bentonite by weight of asphalt binder) to determine the appropriate mixing ratio that sustained the desired characteristics. Different tests were conducted to examine the properties of modified asphalt binder among which penetration, softening point, rotational viscosity, penetration index (PI) and ductility. The results of our study revealed an increase in softening point and rotational viscosity and decrease in binder penetration. Moreover, blending of variable amounts of nanomaterials with the asphalt binders has improved their physical properties compared with macroparticles blended and unmodified binders as indicated by the penetration index and ductility test. The most significant improvement in the modified binders was obtained by blending of 5% for two types of nanoparticles. Finally, the rut depth was measured by wheel track test for the modified asphalt mixture, with ilmenite and bentonite, to validate the obtained results. The results show that the engineering performance of asphalt produced from bitumen binder modified with nanoparticles is much better than conventional asphalt and such binder-modified asphalt is strongly recommended for use on site.","PeriodicalId":31454,"journal":{"name":"HBRC Journal","volume":"16 1","pages":"335 - 350"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/16874048.2020.1834904","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44052173","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
