Firstly, to study the effect of cross-section, six models have been conducted with various aspect ratios defined as the depth per the width of the cross-section with a constant number of carbon fiber layers. While the behavior of each aspect ratio in both axial and transverse directions was investigated, the results demonstrate that while the CFRP jackets increase the efficiency of square sections significantly, however, CFRP jacket's effect reduces when cross-section aspect ratio becomes more than 2.0. Secondly, twelve finite element models have been built to study the effect of load eccentricity on the behavior of RC short columns wrapped with external CFRP. The results showed that external confinement can significantly increase the strength of columns under concentric loading, while the enhancement in columns under eccentric loading is not the same.","PeriodicalId":31454,"journal":{"name":"HBRC Journal","volume":"17 1","pages":"93 - 121"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/16874048.2021.1884454","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45813633","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed living heritage model is separated into three fundamental actions: firstly, the identification of important historical places and buildings that are reused to serve conservation and tourism development, as well as the participation of the core community in determining this. Secondly, the development of a tourism strategy and development plans, in which the local community must also participate. Thirdly, the development of maintenance and control programs, which must be supervised by the local community through its partnership with the Ministry and those responsible for conservation operations. Moreover, the hypothesis is to find a way to implement the living heritage in a local rural context. It also tackles different ways of implementing the living heritage approach based on international case studies (Albergo Diffuso, in Italy and the Meteora, in Greece), to inform sustainable economic and tourism development in the local rural context of Mount Lebanon. The methodological study will take into consideration two analyses: a theoretical (literature reviews and main definitions) and a practical (comparative analysis and case studies). In conclusion, several strategies can be taken into account in order to attain a successful living heritage of sustainable economics and tourism in Mount Lebanon. In fact, such a goal will be achieved through the partnership among private, public, and local sectors that can create a strong historical-touristic-economic bond.","PeriodicalId":31454,"journal":{"name":"HBRC Journal","volume":"17 1","pages":"491 - 517"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42583445","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

All of that forms unique configurations that express the identity and collective memory of cities. However, in light of the expansion of cities and the accompanying urban transformations, these districts often witness a significant deterioration due to their loss of the higher income groups of their indigenous inhabitants, which leads to a decrease in their economic vitality and level of performance and the deterioration of the residential inventory and living environment in them in general. That is consequently reflected in their resources, even leads to weakening the possibilities of investing it culturally and economically. Therefore, in most countries of the world, these districts have been the focus of many interventions. The early efforts of such interventions were aimed mainly at the conservation of landmark monuments. Later, the scope expanded to include physical, social, economic, and environmental contexts. Because of the importance of this issue, this paper deals with examples of urban interventions in the historic districts of the Arab region, include the projects of El-Hafsia, Tunis, and Al-Darb Al-Ahmar, Cairo, in order to propose reference bases for upgrading the local communities of such districts.","PeriodicalId":31454,"journal":{"name":"HBRC Journal","volume":"17 1","pages":"329 - 364"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/16874048.2021.1938892","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46927842","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It also affects people’s wellbeing and could improve their health. This made landscaping a primary consideration in places that focus on recovery and healing, such as hospitals. By showing this relationship between health and landscaping, the research goal is to improve and control the hospital buildings, which will be built or renovated in the future, especially in Saudi Arabia. The focus will be on buildings’ landscaping design and greenery to achieve high functionality spaces. This paper will detail the relationship between landscape as well as greenspaces in healthcare buildings. A survey was published for patients in different hospitals in Saudi Arabia to analyze related thoughts and investigate the effectiveness of landscape existence on the patient’s recovery. Additionally, particular case studies were examined and analyzed. The results revealed that users believe that healing centers’ landscape unequivocally influence patient’s wellbeing and seeing scenes around the site. Furthermore, landscape in healthcare buildings is neglected; some recommendations were given for particular green areas with percentages to help improving the current healthcare buildings alongside the upcoming ones.","PeriodicalId":31454,"journal":{"name":"HBRC Journal","volume":"17 1","pages":"519 - 532"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45872125","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is based on the modified compression field theory. The capabilities of the program Response-2000 to obtain shear strength capacities in the existence of axial compressive loads are demonstrated. The comparison with the experimental tests proved that the program gives good estimate for the failure shear in this case. The shear provisions of the Egyptian reinforced concrete code (ECP203-2017) are also evaluated against the experimental results. It is found that the accuracy of the obtained results using Rseponse-2000 is better than those obtained using the shear equations of the Egyptian reinforced concrete code (ECP203-2017). The program Response-2000 is then used to generate 336 results for 7 different cross-sections considering different concrete compressive strengths, transverse reinforcement, and values of axial loads. These generated results along with 33 experimental results for other 7 cross-sections are used to develop a new formula for the shear strength capacity in the existence of axial compressive loads. This formula is found to give better results when verified against experimental data.","PeriodicalId":31454,"journal":{"name":"HBRC Journal","volume":"66 3","pages":"365 - 388"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/16874048.2021.1944734","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41259451","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main aim of this study to investigate the possibility of partial replacement of brick clay by GSW and silica fume (SF) due to the similarity of the mineralogical composition of GSW and clay. Five different series of clay to SF to GSW proportions were tried, which were (70:5:25), (70:10:20), (70:15:15), (70:20:10), (70:25:5) by weight. These bricks were mixed and molded in the dimensions of 50 x 50 x 50 mm3 and then fired at three different temperatures (700°C, 750°C and 800°C). The properties of green and fired bricks were studied as a function of waste percent. The vitrification parameters, such as compressive strength, water absorption, saturation coefficient, apparent porosity and bulk density, were determined and compared with ASTM standards. The results showed that the water absorption and compressive strength is very sensitive to the temperature changes than waste addition. It is possible to produce bricks with the highest compressive strength of 18.5 MPa at firing temperature 700°C using 70% clay, 25% SF and 5% granite sludge waste with water absorption of 18.2% and saturation coefficient 0.9 to meet the standard specification ASTM C216 grade for moderate weathering that are recommended for environmental and economic benefits.","PeriodicalId":31454,"journal":{"name":"HBRC Journal","volume":" 8","pages":"123 - 136"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/16874048.2021.1904549","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41253104","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such floor plays an important role in seismic performance of the building. This is due to the abrupt changes in lateral stiffness and strength caused by such storey. In this study, the seismic performance of RC buildings with soft storey using finite element method is investigated. The parameters considered in this research include the height of soft storey, irregularity in building plan dimensions, and the location of soft storey along the building height. An attempt is made in this research to find the optimum location of the soft storey through the building height to minimize its effect. In addition, the impact of applying simple strengthening techniques is investigated to promote structural safety without significant changes in the architectural and functional requirements of the building. The results include the effect of the investigated parameters on stiffness, displacement and storey drifts by using equivalent static load method and modal response spectrum method (MRS). P-Delta effect and cracked stiffness ratio are included in analysis. The results show that the factors such as increasing height of soft storey or increasing length-to-width ratio in the building have a significant effect on the stiffness and resistance. The results also demonstrate the effectiveness of the presence of shear walls for increasing stiffness and reducing displacements. Besides, providing a bracing system for retrofitting the building with soft storey has a positive effect on the behavior of these buildings.","PeriodicalId":31454,"journal":{"name":"HBRC Journal","volume":"17 1","pages":"407 - 428"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/16874048.2021.1949690","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46632842","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Also, most green building rating systems focus on the environmental aspect without the rest of the sustainability aspects, which reduces the opportunities of their use in the design and assessment process and the construction industry in general. Thus, the research aims to assess, develop, and adjust the path of green architecture rating systems based on a green basis has the sustainable feature to produce, generate, and optimize design concepts and thoughts. Hence, the concept of environment and sustainability are emphasized. The principles on which rating systems were built; were collected and outlined. Then, Green Pyramid Rating System (GPRS) was assessed through an analytical comparison with sustainability to find out the obstacles of GPRS, and GPRS requires more support, treatment, and promotion. Also, a procedural definition of sustainable green design was deduced, which supports activating rating systems by examining the relationship of overlap between green architecture and sustainable design. Finally, a sustainable design strategy was formulated that helps to guide designers toward generating and employing design concepts based on sustainable green thought. This strategy was validated using the Delphi method.","PeriodicalId":31454,"journal":{"name":"HBRC Journal","volume":"17 1","pages":"461 - 490"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42639599","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
