Thus, the aim of this research is to assess the thermal and structural performance of different types of concrete slabs using real simulation for heat transferred from solar radiation, and from difference between indoor and outdoor temperatures in the existence of dead and imposed loads. Three types of slabs were examined: normal, voided and foamed concrete. Moreover, the effect of slab end conditions was investigated. Thermal analysis was performed for each slab type considering summer and winter weather of Egypt. In this analysis, the heat transferred through each slab was calculated, and hence the ability of each type to maintain the indoor temperature could be determined. The non-uniform distribution of temperature along the thickness of each slab type was used through structural analysis to examine the performance of the considered slabs under the effect of thermal actions and static loads. Both voided and foamed concrete slabs maintained successfully the indoor temperature from being affected by the climatic conditions; whereas, the best from a structural point of view was in favor of voided slabs as clarified through this research.","PeriodicalId":31454,"journal":{"name":"HBRC Journal","volume":"15 1","pages":"33 - 54"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/16874048.2019.1626089","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46037283","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several numerical methods are used in earthquake engineering to solve the ordinary differential equation of motion. Previous studies assumed the appropriate time step as a constant fraction of natural period of the system disregarding period range. This study is concerned with assessing, by numerical experiment; the numerical error of commonly used schemes in nonlinear dynamic analyses and assessing their appropriateness for different excitations with different structural periods. The current investigation involved testing Newmark, HHT and HHT1 methods. The three methods were tested for nonlinear single degree of freedom system representing a typical concrete bridge structure. Three different exciting forces were used to test the schemes; half-sine pulse, harmonic force, and actual ground motion record. Three natural periods were used to conduct the experiment, representing short, medium and long period systems including the resonant condition. Three structural damping ratios, representing lightly, moderately and heavily damped systems, were used to assess the damping effect on the accuracy of the schemes. The results of this investigation indicated that commonly used assumption of time step as a constant fraction of natural period of the system disregarding the period range could result in significant numerical errors. The study also showed the significant effect of damping ratio of the system on the accuracy of the numerical schemes. The study presents a recommendation matrix of the most appropriate time step for each scheme for different applications and structural conditions.","PeriodicalId":31454,"journal":{"name":"HBRC Journal","volume":"15 1","pages":"1 - 31"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/16874048.2019.1619257","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43817389","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The BNWF is considered a simplified approach that is capable to model nonlinear soil-pile-structure interaction. Soil nonlinearity is simulated by p-y curves according to American Petroleum Institute (API) procedure. The analyses are carried out using the open source finite element platform OpenSees. Results are verified against centrifuge experiments and numerical finite element simulations published in the literature. In this paper pile tip and head constraints effects on bending moments and displacement responses are investigated. Three types of pile tip constraints are applied: floating, end bearing, and fixed supports. Pile top constraint is modeled as either free or fixed head. Three different earthquake ground motions are applied in the model. Effect of superstructure mass is investigated for the three considered earthquake records and the different assumed pile end and head constraints. The results indicate significant influence of pile tip and head constraints on pile bending moment and displacement responses. A significant effect of superstructure mass on the analyses results is also observed. The analyses show that earthquake record characteristics remarkably influence pile response behavior. Different earthquake records scaled to the same peak ground acceleration give different pile seismic responses.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":31454,"journal":{"name":"HBRC Journal","volume":"14 3","pages":"Pages 316-320"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/j.hbrcj.2017.02.001","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45284988","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A cone instrument with different apex angle values (20, 30, 40 and 45°) was implemented. One type of steel fibers (SF), three types of polypropylene fibers (PP1, PP2 and PP3) as well as one type of glass fibers (GF) with different fiber volume fractions and aspect ratios were conducted. Fourteen FR-SCC mixes in addition to a control mix were examined. A new terminology called fluidity index (FI) was proposed and evaluated based on the displaced volume rate according to the buoyancy law through performing cone penetration test. Parallel with the penetration test, traditional flow ability and segregation resistance tests were performed.</p><p>The results indicated that the proposed method is effective in evaluating the fluidity of FR-SCC mixes in terms of FI. FI values between 0.8 and 1.0 indicate SCC mixes whereas, FI lower than 0.8 indicate fresh concrete with fluidity not satisfying requirements of SCC. The proposed method can be performed either at laboratory or at field with and without sampling. Moreover, it can be directly adapted to the cast concrete in structural members provided that there is no obstruction for penetration. The direct proportion between FI and the slump flow test results indicated its viability to evaluate the fluidity of both FR-SCC and SCC mixtures.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":31454,"journal":{"name":"HBRC Journal","volume":"14 3","pages":"Pages 368-378"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/j.hbrcj.2017.04.003","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45601105","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Also, some future perspectives will be forwarded to solve the housing privacy problem of Hong Kong and to improve the local residents’ living condition. In the survey, the researcher obtains the data onto two types of interviews: local residents and government officers. It is also supported by the utilization of secondary data. The findings of this research indicate that most of the residents endure in the housing privacy problem, and this problem became the critical social issue that seriously affects their regular life in Hong Kong. Furthermore, the findings have powerful living condition implications. They are highly influential on humanity’s quality of life that related to housing private characteristics. Due to the high living density and small housing size of the public housing in Hong Kong, the local residents’ housing privacy definitely will be affected. Therefore, to improve public housing residents’ living condition in Hong Kong, certain housing private variables need to be paid attention and improved in the future. The aspect ratio of the cross section plays an important role on the efficiency of the applied strengthening technique. This research aimed, experimentally and analytically, to study the effect of aspect ratio on the obtained gain in strength and structural ductility. Also, the effect of both type and configuration of FRP wrapping is discussed. The obtained experimental results showed that the value of the aspect ratio has a significant effect on the gain in strength but it has no obvious influence on the obtained ductility. Moreover, based on the experimental results of 16 specimens concerning the load carrying capacity of FRP-confined specimens, a study to address the applicability of the analytical models (Egyptian code EC, American Concrete Institute ‘ACI’ code) proposed to predict the nominal compressive strength of rectangular columns confined with FRP sheets is presented in this research. Furthermore, this research introduces a modified model to deal with the FRP partial wrapping system. However both the examined models (ACI and EC) haven’t introduced any analytical models to predict the strength of RC columns confined partially with FRP wrapping sheets. The model proposed by ACI code showed an underestimation in predicting the nominal compressive strength, however that proposed by EC showed somewhat an acceptable estimation but inaccurate. Also, the modified expression suggested by the author dealing with columns confined with partially wrapped FRP sheets is examined in this research.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":31454,"journal":{"name":"HBRC Journal","volume":"14 3","pages":"Pages 264-271"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/j.hbrcj.2016.11.002","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48522144","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The use of LSD in Egypt is limited to the design of reinforced concrete structures. The geotechnical design is still based on the WSD method. The updated Egyptian Geotechnical Code will include both methods for a transition period before fully adopting the LSD. This study describes the methodology and results of determination of the partial factors for the limit states FSA for cantilever walls in dry cohesionless soils such that the LSD matches the WSD. These calibrated values are essential for the transition period when both the WSD and LSD design philosophies are applicable. These projects which may vary in their benefits, types, sizes, and complexity levels; generate some sort of difficulty for many government organizations managing hundreds of projects in selecting projects to be monitored. The initial selection of those projects which are being monitored through organization’s dashboards is usually drafted via some criteria that comprise a meaningful group (s) to the top management; and then this selection is altered by forcing few projects in and out. This study aim is to replace the initial existing manual selection process by an intelligent model. The proposed model is based on ANN (Artificial Neural Networks) that uses the databases of more than 300 projects out of which are 48 projects that were actually selected to be in the top management monitoring dashboards. The ANN model was built and tested for accuracy via examining the deviation between the model results and the actual selection. The test results showed acceptable confidence level in the model results where accuracy was proven to be initially accepted.
