A low-cost waterproofing product with good thermal insulation properties is the aim of this paper. Natural rubber (NR)/clay composite was prepared with different concentrations of clay (20, 40, 60, 80,100, 150 and 200) phr. An experimental investigation was carried out to obtain low-cost construction material with desirable mechanical, thermal and waterproofing properties. The influences of clay loading on mechanical, water absorption, swelling, specific gravity and thermal properties were inspected. It was observed that the incorporation of clay into the NR increases the thermal conductivity, the maximum degree of swelling and swelling index decrease with increasing clay content. The tensile properties of NR composite were found to be increased with the increase of clay content due to the increase of crosslinking density the incorporation of clay into the NR decreases the swelling parameters, Crosslink density calculations from both swelling and mechanical measurements have the same trend and order of magnitude. It exhibited some extent of improvement in tensile, hardness and compression set properties with the addition of clay. NR loaded with 60 phr clay was chosen as the reasonable value of thermal conductivity which lies in the range of thermal insulating material and suitable mechanical properties and other concentrations with the higher thermal conductivity can be used as a waterproofing sheet.","PeriodicalId":31454,"journal":{"name":"HBRC Journal","volume":"16 1","pages":"1 - 15"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/16874048.2019.1688073","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60335681","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The concept of smart infrastructure is derived from the idea of the smart city which is described as a comprehensive system with different elements such as stakeholders, environment, economy, mobility, and living conditions of a given geographical space with efficient information communication technology (ICTs). Therefore, Stakeholders is one of the main success factors of Public–Private Partnerships (PPPs) in smart infrastructure projects, Hence, studying and analyzing stakeholders role in smart infrastructure projects through PPPs concept will decrease opposition leading to a non or ineffective implementation of the project as a result of the gap between the expectations of different stakeholders involved in PPPs on the desired process or outcome of the project. The presented study aims to establish a successful PPPs for smart infrastructure project phases with presenting a clear image of stakeholder’s roles, and highlights PPPs challenges, characteristics, state’s models, and agreements methods, especially with the high cost of these projects, to reach a set of recommendations aid to improve efficiency, quality, and affordable costs to achieve a sustainability whether in retrofitting or in the new urban sprawl.","PeriodicalId":31454,"journal":{"name":"HBRC Journal","volume":"16 1","pages":"317 - 333"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/16874048.2020.1825038","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44368153","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Different architectural styles of façades in heritage buildings define certain forms, design rules, techniques and materials for building construction. Over the past few decades, heritage buildings in khedivial Cairo have lost most of its historic and architectural identities for intentional and unintentional reasons. Apparently, the unregistered heritage buildings (URHBs) have undergone, and still undergoing, a process of architectural change. Today, clear evidences of a general modification process daily take place to the architectural and decorative elements of façades. The research aim is to highlight the importance and uniqueness of URHBs and to outline the architectural identity of the façades in these buildings with in-situ applications in Khedival Cairo (Cairo downtown). Recently, URHBs in this region are suffering demolition and destruction of its artistic and architectural values. The present work has the objective to assess the current situation of URHB facades through: (a) historical survey to understand the conception and the significance of the URHBs, the techniques and the skills used in its facades construction; (b) trace and survey the changes that took place in facades elements (decorative and architectural elements); (c) verify the effect of modification phenomena and other types of damage on the historic and esthetic values of these buildings and to explain the role of modification processes in change the architectural identity and the architectural harmony of Khedival Cairo; and (d) present the desire of communities to conserve their built-heritage through the community participation.","PeriodicalId":31454,"journal":{"name":"HBRC Journal","volume":"16 1","pages":"77 - 112"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/16874048.2020.1779474","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49360512","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is an essential issue in our lives and people cannot live without it. Transport provides access for people from their home to their work, education, health services, shops, and other services. Transportation system in developing countries is suffering from many problems such as: traffic congestion, lack of reliable and safe public transportation, road accidents, and difficulties for non-motorized transport. Transportation sector is the highest sector responsible for negative environmental impacts in the cities. It is responsible for high air and noise pollution and generating greenhouse gas emissions. Transportation master plans are essential, they are not less important than urban master plans and many cities lack the preparation of these plans. Establishing a sustainable and green urban transport system with an integrated approach to policymakers and decision-makers is essential. This system will change the direction of urban transport and mobility toward a more sustainable and green future by providing and developing affordable, economically viable, people-oriented and environment-friendly transport systems. This research studies the current situation and problems facing the transportation system in developing countries in general and in Egypt specifically. It also presents the Egyptian Government intervention in solving mobility and transportation problems. Finally, the research examines the strategies and methods that transportation professionals must use to address sustainable and green transportation.","PeriodicalId":31454,"journal":{"name":"HBRC Journal","volume":"16 1","pages":"17 - 37"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/16874048.2020.1719340","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46715683","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition, these beams give construction time saving because of the simplicity of formwork and reinforced placement. Structural deficiency arises in the ultimate shear capacity of such beams as some codes neglect the contribution of shear reinforcement. Shear strengthening by Strain-Hardening Cementations Composites (SHCC) in form of a 2-sided or u-shaped jacket along shear spans provides a reliable solution.SHCC is an engineered cementitious composite having far superior to conventional cement mortar and has ingredients to contribute most optimally and efficiently to the various properties. The objective of this research is to study the shear behavior of shallow wide beams strengthened in shear with external SHCC layers along with the effect of vertical stirrups on the shear strength of shallow wide beams. An experimental program consisting of eleven specimens divided into three groups has been carried out. The investigation focused on studying the shear behavior of shallow wide beam with and without stirrups, examining the effect of thickness and grade of SHCC as a shear strengthening technique with various jacketing patterns with and without inserted external stirrups. The experimental results are further compared with predictions of particular international code provisions. Based on the comparative analysis of the conservative code's predictions for shallow beams, a modification is proposed to improve the predictions of the Egyptian code’s provisions for ultimate shear. The suggested equations account for the shear span to depth ratio, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, size effect, jacketing confinement, inclination of the compressive stresses to the beam axis besides the concrete/SHCC grades.","PeriodicalId":31454,"journal":{"name":"HBRC Journal","volume":"16 1","pages":"351 - 363"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/16874048.2020.1796083","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44510408","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The failure modes, hysteretic load-displacement loops, dissipated energy, and residual displacement were observed and analyzed. In addition, the seismic performance of proposed construction method with and without energy dissipation rebar, different level of posttensioning were studied. The test results were used to verify the Finite Element Model (FEM) developed in this study. Tested specimens were modeled using the ABAQUS platform under quasi-static loading. The analytical model considered interaction between precast elements, unbonded strands, and surrounding concrete and bond slip between column main reinforcement and concrete. Developed FEM for monolithic bridge pier showed comparable results with the experimental tests. FEM was able to predict the hysteretic behavior of modeled bridge piers with high degree of accuracy. In addition, FEM confirmed the experimental observations and showed that precast self-centering hammer head bridge piers system is capable of withstanding any large lateral displacements before achieving the peak lateral strength. Sensitivity analyses was conducted to investigate the effect of mesh size and bond-slip interaction. Finally a parametric study was conducted to study the effect of construction method, energy dissipation rebar ratio and socket depth on the hysteretic response of the modeled bridge piers. This study reveals that FE analysis using the proposed model is validated to be used in determining the appropriate range of applied posttensioning force; energy dissipation rebar ratio and recess depth.","PeriodicalId":31454,"journal":{"name":"HBRC Journal","volume":"16 1","pages":"113 - 141"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/16874048.2020.1789385","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46860507","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Selection process of bridges’ structural system is mainly based on skill, knowledge base and experience that needs specified references helping in this process. There is a crucial need to manipulate a holistic Value e Engineering (VE) framework into the structural analysis/design of roadway bridges taking into consideration construction cost, construction time and environmental impacts. Unfortunately, the reported work on such an important field is still ecologically limited. The present research has two folds: (1) organize survey on VE related to structural-ecological prospective in bridge construction and (2) conduct a parametric study on analysis and design factors influencing VE outputs. For this purpose, a questionnaire was prepared to determine the extent of VE awareness among stakeholders and to test the controlling parameters. This survey has targeted a focus group of professional engineers in bridge engineering companies satisfying pre-determined characteristics. Setting the main VE parameters, study cases have been accounted for medium to large span simply supported and continuous roadway bridges with several cross sections using particular international code provisions. The VE included Embodied Carbon Emission (ECE) resulting from all activities thus estimating the cost of the carbon capture system. The total cost of each design case is estimated and compared to reach the minimum cost approach, thus enabling to recommend the most efficient structural system for Roadway Bridge. Hence, filling the gap between previous researches and bridge engineering practice.","PeriodicalId":31454,"journal":{"name":"HBRC Journal","volume":"43 37","pages":"207 - 226"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/16874048.2020.1794348","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41285843","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
