The BBC is well known for its historic core mission (to inform, educate and entertain) and commitment to the principles of independence and impartiality. Yet the definition and practical application of these tenets are far from clear-cut. Considered by some to be a quasi-autonomous non-governmental organization, the BBC has been subjected to much criticism throughout its long history regarding its ability to resist State and corporate pressures. This article seeks to explore State pressures in the context of calls for national unity in times of crisis when tensions with the BBC are at their greatest. To this end, a qualitative analysis of the 1956 Suez Crisis is conducted and is linked to the decline of the British Empire. This study shows the limited interpretation of impartiality by the BBC at that time. Anthony Eden’s Conservative government fought a propaganda war at home and abroad in the build-up to military intervention. The BBC’s independence was ambiguous at best, although it emerged from the crisis with its reputation intact due to its insistence on the notion of impartiality.","PeriodicalId":31365,"journal":{"name":"Revue Francaise de Civilisation Britannique","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70598046","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But this narrative only makes sense as far as Britain is able to establish or maintain ambitious partnerships either with the EU or with individual member states. This paper analyses the rationale behind the deepening of bilateral cooperation with France in order to show that it remains crucial if Britain wants to maintain its role as one of the main actors in European defence and security policy.Ten years after the signing of the November 2010 Lancaster House treaties on defence and security and on nuclear cooperation, this paper uses a role theory approach to recall the strategic, political and economic rationales for bilateral cooperation and examine the current state of Franco-British relations. Brexit puts this cooperation at risk – with Emmanuel Macron calling for a stronger EU based on a reinforced Franco-German partnership – and recent developments in defence cooperation in Europe – with the implementation of the Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) and the creation of the European Intervention Initiative (EI2) – raise questions about the respective roles of France and the UK. But this paper also shows that the current international context reinforces the case for close Franco-British defence and security relations that are beneficial for both partners, as well as for the EU.","PeriodicalId":31365,"journal":{"name":"Revue Francaise de Civilisation Britannique","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70597931","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It looks in particular at the work – the successes, failures and frustrations – of an assistant director, a bureaucrat, who planned to regenerate music policy, especially so in terms of pop and light music, which led to the formation of the numbered station system still in use today: Radios 1 - 4. Using primary sources from the BBC’s written archives, the article will identify the oppositions he faced from external forces (the Sound Broadcasting Society, the Musicians’ Union) and the internal staff (music department operatives, presenters). It will attempt to explain, through the prism of Michel Crozier’s study The Bureaucratic Phenomenon (1964), how the assistant director overcame these hurdles across the ten years of time that it took to pummel policy into practice.","PeriodicalId":31365,"journal":{"name":"Revue Francaise de Civilisation Britannique","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48622212","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article asks whether this pledge is to be taken at face value. To do so, this paper starts by explaining One-nation Conservatism, from its Disraelian roots to its use by the conservative party throughout the 20th century. It then examines Johnson’s self-branding as a One-nation conservative. It concludes by examining some of Johnson’s decisions which shed some doubt on his one-nation commitment.","PeriodicalId":31365,"journal":{"name":"Revue Francaise de Civilisation Britannique","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47794573","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Abdou","doi":"10.4000/rfcb.5827","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4000/rfcb.5827","url":null,"abstract":"Le glossaire du Parlement britannique definit le programme comme « un document publie par un parti politique avant une election legislative », ajoutant qu’il « contient un ensemble de mesures que le parti […] souhaiterait appliquer une fois elu ». Les programmes sont un rituel de la vie politique britannique. Publie trois semaines avant la date de l’election legislative, le « manifesto » est le resultat de tractations, compromis et negociations pendant de long mois voire plusieurs annees au sein du parti travailliste. Le programme electoral est souvent un enjeu politique dans la mesure ou il cristallise les divisions internes au sein du parti travailliste, les differents courants du parti souhaitant imprimer leur marque. « Le temps est venu pour un vrai changement ». C’est le titre donne par le chef du parti travailliste, Jeremy Corbyn, a son programme pour les elections legislatives du 12 decembre 2019. Parmi les mesures annoncees, les nationalisations du rail, de l’eau et de la poste tout comme d’une partie du geant des telecommunications BT afin de mettre en œuvre l’une des promesses les plus spectaculaires du parti : fournir le haut debit gratuit pour tous. Cette derniere mesure a ete tres vite raillee par la presse et le parti conservateur et utilisee par la frange moderee du parti travailliste pour denoncer le manque de realisme de l’equipe Corbyn. Cet article tentera d’analyser les propositions du programme travailliste 2019 en mettant en lumiere les fondements theoriques qui les sous-tendent. Neither could the Conservatives afford to ignore Scotland as they knew too well that they had only managed to snatch victory out of the jaws of defeat in the 2017 general election thanks to the crucial addition of thirteen Scottish Conservative seats. The upsurge in Conservative votes in Scotland coincided with a strong unionist message which had proved fruitful in the 2017 general election despite a political context dominated by Brexit. Could the Scottish Conservatives repeat their success of 2017 by focusing on the Union and betting that Scotland’s constitutional debate would once again trump the issue of Brexit? This paper will seek to compare the last two general election campaigns in Scotland in order to determine to what extent Brexit determined the results of the 2019 general election.","PeriodicalId":31365,"journal":{"name":"Revue Francaise de Civilisation Britannique","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70598122","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
