Why did the Conservatives win, and win so well, when the party had been bitterly riven for over three years by deep disagreement about Brexit? This chapter analyses the reasons for that success and asks what this says about the politically unity of the United Kingdom. It argues that, beneath the surface of a decisive electoral outcome, the UK remains a country divided, demographically, socially and geographically. The future course of British politics remains uncertain.","PeriodicalId":31365,"journal":{"name":"Revue Francaise de Civilisation Britannique","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70598182","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

L’objectif de cet article est de s’interroger sur l’impact du Brexit Party sur les elections legislatives de 2019. Pour repondre a cette question, il est toutefois necessaire d’elargir la sequence, puisque l’influence du Brexit Party sur le scrutin de decembre precede la campagne et remonte en realite aux elections europeennes de mai 2019 ; elle s’inscrit dans une sequence plus longue, composee de deux phases successives. La premiere correspond a l’entree fracassante de ce nouvel objet politique sur la scene politique britannique et a l’onde de choc provoquee par sa victoire aux elections europeennes, avec un impact majeur sur le parti conservateur, et, partant, sur les elections legislatives qui ont suivi. La seconde concerne la campagne electorale du Brexit Party pour ces legislatives, marquee par la competition avec le parti conservateur pour l’espace politique. Si les resultats des elections indiquent sans conteste que le Brexit Party est sorti perdant de cette competition, ils ne refletent cependant pas la realite de l’impact du parti, qui va au-dela des chiffres. On peut veritablement parler d’un « effet Brexit Party » sur les elections et plus largement sur la vie politique britannique.","PeriodicalId":31365,"journal":{"name":"Revue Francaise de Civilisation Britannique","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70598112","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

If the Welsh Labour Party, chaired by a new leader, Mark Drakeford, since December 2018 and weakened by the May 2019 European Elections, managed to remain the dominant party in the country, it obtained its worst election results since 1935, which can be explained by its weak leadership and the confusing message sent to voters. Such results are a bad omen for the forthcoming Welsh Parliament election scheduled in May 2021.","PeriodicalId":31365,"journal":{"name":"Revue Francaise de Civilisation Britannique","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70598237","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We examine the Labour Party under Jeremy Corbyn and show how its values have shifted away from its northern heartlands. In doing so, it tries to elucidate what the North means in poetry and what poetry does to representations of the North. A paper on poetry in a journal devoted to British social studies, even though tackling the theme of the issue, namely the North-South Divide today, might come as a surprise to most readers. Hopefully, the present article will prove that verse is not adverse to a reflection on the state of Britain and that the divide between the two fields of study can be bridged and help further research.","PeriodicalId":31365,"journal":{"name":"Revue Francaise de Civilisation Britannique","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48938790","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Health inequalities refer to differences between people or groups due to social, geographical, biological or other factors in terms of life expectancy and healthy life expectancy According to the 2010 Marmot review, not only is there a strong social justice case for reducing health inequalities, but also an economic one, since it is estimated to cost over £30 billion a year in lost productivity and welfare costs. Health coverage is universal in England and close to full coverage in many areas of public health. The founding principles of the NHS are that public health services should be free at the point of use and that health inequalities are undesirable because they are unfair or unjust. Yet, despite universal coverage of health services and the equity principles behind public health in the UK, nowhere is the North-South divide more apparent than in the area of health. Since the 1960s, the South has consistently outperformed the North in terms of health outcomes in all areas (life expectancy, ill health, chronic disease…). Poor health is associated with socio-economic status, which is one of the main reasons why the North is at a disadvantage, with a higher number of neighbourhoods suffering from multiple deprivation. This paper considers health inequalities between the North and South and reviews policy implemented since the late 1970s to improve health service delivery in the North of England. In particular, it considers to what extent public policy has mitigated health inequities there.","PeriodicalId":31365,"journal":{"name":"Revue Francaise de Civilisation Britannique","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70597734","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It seeks to analyse the role of industrial heritage amidst initiatives aiming at the regeneration and reuse of the historic built environment, in a context suggesting a positive reassessment of industrial vestiges in the North of England. If both northern post-industrial cities are determined to improve their image and to promote themselves as tourist destinations, they strongly differ with regard to the use of industrial heritage as a promotional tool, thereby implying a swaying between the acknowledgment of the industrial past and the will to move forward.","PeriodicalId":31365,"journal":{"name":"Revue Francaise de Civilisation Britannique","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70597382","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The representation of its industrial and urban features has given birth to a two-pronged mythical construction over sixty years: a geographical and a psychoanalytical/gendered one using the figure of the Northerner. Cinema is a myth and identity maker but it is also a medium which has reflected the socioeconomic evolutions of the North, first synonymous with relative prosperity and modernity until the 1980s, then decline and recession owing to deindustrialisation. Simultaneously, films try to deconstruct both the archetypal North – which ends up being geographically and socioeconomically more diverse than it first seems to be – and the figure of the Northerner – who takes his self-proclaimed image or the one that the South seeks to give him with a pinch of salt. The common identity of Northerners mostly channelled through their common aversion towards the South nonetheless leads them to reconstruct the myth of their native North.","PeriodicalId":31365,"journal":{"name":"Revue Francaise de Civilisation Britannique","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70597685","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, a closer analysis at UK housing markets shows that it is necessary to qualify if not debunk that concept. This article will examine the North-South divide not so much from a public policy perspective as from a housing markets and housing conditions perspective. Firstly, I shall briefly analyse the official discourse with regard to a North-South divide in housing. Next, I shall examine the issue of the rescaling of housing and the growing importance given to the sub-regional level in England. Secondly, I shall examine the relevance of the North-South divide in housing in the UK on the basis of four indicators (physical aspect, state of repair, tenure, prices). Thirdly, I shall raise the question of the emergence of new and more relevant housing divides in England. Finally, I shall explore the question of housing policy divergence in a post-devolution UK.","PeriodicalId":31365,"journal":{"name":"Revue Francaise de Civilisation Britannique","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70597838","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
