{"title":"Herausforderungen für die australische Germanistik. German Studies als ›life writing studies‹ und der transnationale und interdisziplinäre ›turn‹","authors":"A. Lewis","doi":"10.14361/9783839450413-003","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.14361/9783839450413-003","url":null,"abstract":"Like many other anglophone English-speaking countries, Germanistik in Australia has faced numerous challenges over the last two decades to survive. Despite a series of administrative restructures, greater commercialisation of universities and increasing reliance on fees, German has proved astoundingly resistant. It has successfully withstood pressure from the dominant »monolingual mindset« (Hajek/Slaughter 2014) in the tertiary education sector and in society more broadly, and witnessed a resurgence in student numbers in many universities. In teaching and research, Germanistik in Australia has been recast as German Studies in the broadest sense, whereby literature is regarded as one cultural medium among many, alongside culture, film and theatre. It is proposed here that one of the specific contributions that an Australian German Studies can make to global German Studies is in reconceptualising literary studies as life writing studies. A focus on life writing permits a more sustained focus on memory and testimonial writing, for instance, of first, second and third generational survivors of the Holocaust (many of whom emigrated to Australia) as well as autobiographies of victims and perpetrators (and their of fspring) of the GDR. It also allows us to read the secret police archives of the GDR themselves as forms of life writing, which are being rewritten and overwritten in biography and autobiography. To read Stasi files as literature can therefore be seen as part of a larger project asking what is the value of literature, and why do we use it (vgl. Felski 2008; 2009). It can be fruitful to reconceive literature as a »Lebenswissenschaf t« (vgl. Ette 2010; 2012) that, in an age in which the humanities are under attack, can hold its own against pressure from the sciences. Institutional imperatives in foreign language departments in universities have also encouraged a transcultural and transnational research turn, in which projects spill out over national boundaries. These can provide illuminating comparative perspectives, for instance, in studies of the transnational evolution of the case study genre in sexology, psychoanalysis and literature. Finally, much of the research in Australian German Studies in recent years has explored various permutations of interdisciplinarity. In the context of the by some theatrologists diagnosed existence of two different cultures and theatre traditions, the notion of interculturalism seems to be a handy tool for a research on Polish and German theatre relationships. Polish people of theatre who have decided to leave Poland and continue their career in Germany can be called »those who are crossing the border between theatre cultures « (» Grenzgänger zwischen den Theater-Kulturen «) . Each of them had to take an attempt of finding their place within the existing theatre culture. This took place only after answering the question of the role of Polish and German traditions in this work. This article presents one of possible con cepts of leading theatre as well as its existence and the work of »Teatr Kreatur « [The Theatre of Creatures] (1991-2003) led by Andrzej Woron in Berlin will serve as an example. The fol lowing notions have been used to describe this intercultural phenomenon: dichotomy one of us or a stranger, otherness, exotism and folklorization of culture. In the 1960s, Pierre Bertaux suggested a rad ical reformation of German studies by shifting the focus from literature to contemporary politics and history. Bertaux had a significant influence on the development of German Studies in the following decades, as the German Studies Association, founded in the United States, stressed the importance of interdisciplinary approaches and further supported the shift from literary to social, cultural, political studies and related fields. This has led to an overall decline of contributions concerned with literature in conferences and in anthologies. Moreover, the lingua franca tends to be English instead of German in conferences held by the GSA, which causes a disadvantage for German scholars and other non-native speakers of English. In Europe one is keen about the integration of immigrants in the culture of the host country and acquisition of its national language. On the contrary, the Indian constitution provides the basis for an inclusive linguistic policy and takes measures to ensure preservation and development of multilinguality. India knows cultural and linguistic diversity since times immemorial. Since thousands of years many folks came to India and settled there. Languages like Farsi, Arabic, English, and Portuguese have lasting effect on Indian languages. For practical reasons we will concentrate here on one Indian state, namely Maharashtra, and one Indian language, i.e. Marathi, which is also the mother tongue of the author of this article. The geography and history of Maharashtra play a decisive role in the development of Marathi. With a few ex amples we will elaborate, how Marathi is influenced by Indo-European as well as by Dra vidian languages. We will also briefly refer to the status of English in India.
