Dans les romances (Pericles, Cymbeline, The Winter’s Tale et The Tempest), Shakespeare se plait a contrevenir a ces prescriptions qui brident l’inventivite du poete : l’une des strategies les plus subtiles que developpe le dramaturge pour s’affranchir de ces figures imposees est le deploiement de metaphores ravivees, qui consistent a reveiller des metaphores mortes pour y redonner une charge imagee voire y deployer un sens neuf. En d’autres termes, ces figures ingenieuses brisent les chaines des metaphores mortes qui, a force d’usage, emprisonnent en elles des sens caches. Dans les romances, les metaphores ravivees ont egalement ce pouvoir de liberer un potentiel comique, y compris au sein de scenes tragiques. D’ailleurs, l’objectif est de souligner l’impact qu’ont ces figures sur l’hybridite generique des pieces tardives. Par l’emploi astucieux de ces figures, Shakespeare s’affranchit des regles de purete generique formulees par les neo-aristoteliciens sur le continent. Doing so, he manages to translate meteorological effects into dramatic affects. As a play scrutinizing unbound and exacerbated feelings in a hot and moist environment, Anthony and Cleopatra is a case in point. It features a heroine whose passionate outbursts and erotic drives are related to broader geo-humoral concerns and climatic issues. In this paper, I first explore the destructive yet paradoxically creative power of the Nile to see how Shakespeare reworks Cleopatra’s liebestod before turning to the heroine’s boundless emotions. I then analyse Shakespeare’s vision of the boundless sky in a tragedy where, under the possible influence of Lucretius, the playwright changes the lovers’ fall into an apotheosis. All in all, I propose to decentre the traditional readings of the play. So far, Cleopatra has often been perceived as an unbound femme fatale while her Roman lover has repeatedly been regarded as the embodiment of inconstancy (“O, my oblivion is a very Anthony”, 1.3.91). How do Shakespeare and modern directors talk to each other across cultural and historical divides? How does Ophelia become “unbound” through supralinguistic structures of spectacle and music? With case studies of three Hamlet films: Haider (India, 2004), The King and the Clown (South Korea, 2005), and Prince of the Himalayas (Tibet, 2006), this article examines how Asian films negotiate with Asian cultural norms, ideas of Ophelia as an iconic victim, and the image of Hamlet as a brooding male intellectual. Outside their country of origin, these films attract audiences who are enthralled by the performance of the exotic, whether it’s Shakespearean or Asian motifs. Within their local market, the name brand of an editorialized Anglophone Shakespeare helps to boost their production value. Cottegnies","doi":"10.4000/SHAKESPEARE.4289","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4000/SHAKESPEARE.4289","url":null,"abstract":"This essay looks at an exceptional manuscript collection of plays, dated 1694-1695 and held at the Bibliotheque municipale of Douai, which I am currently editing for The Internet Shakespeare Editions (http://internetshakespeare.uvic.ca/). It consists in a transcript of six plays by Shakespeare, bound together with three Restoration plays by Nathaniel Lee, John Dryden and William Davenant. The manuscript once belonged to one of the (Catholic) English colleges in Douai. As confirmed by the recently-discovered First Folio in Saint-Omer, English colleges abroad, including Jesuit colleges, had a rich theatrical culture, in which Shakespeare features in a prominent place. G. Blakemore Evans was the first scholar to highlight the importance of the Douai manuscript in 1962. He established that the scribe used the second Folio as copy-text for the Shakespeare plays and pointed out that the transcript contained multiple hitherto-unrecorded readings, which in some instances predate several of the best-known emendations by eighteenth-century scholars like Rowe, or Malone. This paper aims at reconsidering this collection as an anthology, in order to question the uses of the text and the reception of Shakespeare in a Catholic context.
