(The effect of food supplementation program on the nutritional status of pre-school children). Presented at the Second National Pediatric Congress. Bandung. 1971. One of the main nutrition problems in developing countries is protein calorie malnutrition. The age group that has been most affected is the pre-school child. Serious dietary deficiency will impair his physical and mental developments. The pilot project was designed for the care of pre-school children with signs of malnutrition through a supplementary feeding program. The approach is to educate mothers on how to feed, with locally available foods, and care for their pre-school children; using techniques that are compatible with their under­standing and financial   limitation through   active participation. The duration of the supplementary feeding program was three months. In order to evaluate the program some anthro­pometric measurements, dietary intake study and clinical assess­ment were carried out before and after the program. Background: The findings of study that 30% in Bogor and 27% in Jakarta of elderly people were undernourished. Malnutrition may occur due to infection and low food intake. Among elderly people, one of the factors that causes low food intake is affected by impairment of taste sensory and teeth function. The impairment of taste sensory is influenced by zinc status in the body. Objective: To collect food consumption pattem data of zinc rich foods, zinc concentration in serum and to analyze association of zinc concentration and nutritional status. Methods: Research design was cross sectional, and conducted in two sub districts in Bogor city. The respondents were women in 60-75 years of age, no suffering from illnesses and chronically disease. The total respondent was 90 people, and divided into three groups of 30 peoples. Data gathered included respondent identity, physical examination, anthropometry, blood biochemical and zinc dietary consumption. Results: Zinc dietary consumption adequacy of underweight group was only 30% of recommended dietary allowance, while for normal and overweight groups were 40% of dietary allowance. Zinc serum concentration of underweight group (82 ug/dl) was not significantly different with normal group (85 ug/dl), however differed significantly (p<0.05) with overweight group (95 ug/dl). Underweight group suffered 40% zinc deficiency, 27% for normal and only 7% for overweight group. Conclusions: Zinc deficiency was more prevalent in underweight group than that of normal and overweight group. [Panel Gizi Makan 2002,25: 26-33). Objectives : To analyze the relationships between environmental sanitation, morbidity, and nutritional status of under-five children. Method : Data of the Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) 2007 was utilized for the analysis. Data samples is 43.162 children. Descriptive (chi-square) was conducted to examine the relationship between environtmental sanitation and nutritional status, the relationship between morbidity and nutritional status of children under five. Results : Sample of under-five children were 43.3 percent at age 37-59 months. Seventy-three percent of parents toddlers, are at the age of 26-45 years of age. Most parents (72.1%) had education below high-school. Based on anthropometric indicators of under-five children, 18.4 percent underweight, 36.8 percent stunting and 14.1 percent wasting. There is a significant association between the incidence of diarrheal diseases in children under five nutritional status indicators based on weight for age, height for age, and weight for height (BB/U, TB/U and BB/TB). Respiratory disease was significantly associated with indicators of nutritional status based on weight for age and height for age. There is a significant association between a healthy environmental sanitation with the nutritional status of under-five children by weight for age indicator. Conclusion : Nutritional status of under-five children most commonly associated with environmental sanitation and morbidity are indicators of nutritional status based on body weight for age. Tujuan : Menganalisis hubungan antara sanitasi lingkungan, morbiditas, dan status gizi anak di bawah usia lima tahun (balita). Metode : Data Riset Kesehatan Dasar (Riskesdas) 2007 digunakan untuk analisis. Sampel data sebesar 43.162 balita. Uji chi-square dilakukan untuk mengetahui hubungan antara sanitasi lingkungan dan status gizi, hubungan antara morbiditas dan status gizi anak balita. Hasil : 43,3 persen sampel anak balita berusia 37-59 bulan. Tujuh puluh tiga persen orang tua balita berusia 26-45 tahun. Sebagian besar orang tua (72,1%) berpendidikan di bawah SMA. Inrendang making process, a meat is cooked under long time heat with a large amount of variety spices.Kalio, a rendang similar dishes,is cooked with a shorter heating time and less of spices. Kalio has a few sauce while rendang has no sauce. Long time heating in cooking processmay cause maillard reactionin rendang and kalio. One effect of maillard reaction is lowering the availability of amino acids, consequently could reduce the protein content qualities. To assess the protein nutritional values of rendang and kalio, an in vivo study was conducted using albino rats as animal models. The result showed that cooking process did not confirm any significant differences on feed conversion efficiency, protein efficiency ratio, net protein ratio (NPR), true protein digestibility and biological value (p>0.05)between rendang and kalio, however asignificant difference on net protein utilization (p 0,05) pada feed conversion efficiency (FCE), protein efficiency ratio (PER), net protein ratio (NPR), true protein digestibility (TPD) dan biological value (BV). Akan tetapi pada pengukuran net protein utilization (NPU), terdapat perbedaan yang nyata antara kalio dengan rendang (p<0,05). Menurut hasil penelitian pada tahap fermentasi terjadi penguraian karbohidrat, lemak, protein dan senyawa-senyawa lain dalam kedelai menjadi molekul-molekul yang lebih kecil sehingga mudah dimanfaatkan tubuh. Pada proses fermentasi kedelai menjadi tempe terjadi aktivitas enzim amilolitik, lipolitik dan proteolitik, yang diproduksi oleh kapang Rhizopus Sp. Pada proses pembuatan tempe, sedikitnya terdapat empat genus Rhizopus yang dapat digunakan. Rhizopus oligosporus merupakan genus utama, kemudian Rhizopus oryzae merupakan genus lainnya yang digunakan pada pembuatan tempe di Indonesia. Produsen tempe di Indonesia tidak menggunakan inokulum berupa biakan murni kapang Rhizopus Sp., namun menggunakan inokulum dalam bentuk bubuk yang disebut laru atau inokulum biakan kapang pada daun waru yang disebut usar. Pada penelitian ini dipelajarai aktivitas enzim-enzim a-amilase, lipase dan protease pada proses fermentasi kedelai menjadi tempe menggunakan biakan murni Rhizopus oligosporus, Rhizopus oryzae dan laru. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa aktivitas enzim a-amilase, lipase dan protease dari ketiga inokulum tersebut berbeda secara sangat bermakna. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan pula bahwa aktivitas enzim dipengaruhi oleh jenis inokulum dan waktu fermentasi. In severe deficiency it can cause biochemical changes lead to development and growth retardation especially among exclusive breast feeding infant. A study was conducted in subdistrict Ciomas, district of Bogor amongst 73 lactating mothers of 0-5 months infants. They were grouped into treatment group (39) and control group (34). The treatment group received vitamin B complex contained 6 mg of vitamin B1, 6.5 mcg of vitamin B12 and 500 mcg of folic acid every day for three months and no intervention for control group. The dosage was five times higher than the recommended allowance for vitamin B1 and B12 and just in the recommended level for folic acid for lactating mothers of 0-6 month old infant. The aimed of this study was to know its effect on the breast milk composition, nutritional status and food consumption pattern of the mothers and their infant. There was no significant improvement in the level of vitamin B1, B12 and folic acid as the effect of the intervention. The level of vitamin B1 in breast milk was adequate for the infant based on the recommended allowance level for lactating mothers of 0-4 months exclusive breast feeding infant but not for vitamins B12 and folid acid. These results suggest either the dose is too low of the duration of supplementation too short. Background: Pesticide as a pollutant substance is a goitrogenic agent. It can form a strong complex bound with iodine in the body. Women who ive in the endemic goiter, area where the iodine source in the nature is limited and frequently exposed by pesticide, can increase the prevalence of iodine deficiency disorder (IDD). Objectives: To find out the relationship between cholinesterase enzyme concentration (as an indicator of pesticide exposure in the body) and iodine status of women in the endemic goiter area. Methods: The study was conducted in Pakis sub district, Magelang Regency, Central Java on July to November 2005. The design of the research was \"cross-sectional\" study. Samples were 265 women of child bearing age (17-35 years old). The data collected were concentration of free T4 (FT4) , cholinesterase enzyme in plasma, intake of cyanide originated from food, concentration of urine iodine excretion (UIE), type of contraception used and nutritional status. The concentration of serum FT4 were divided into two group ( nonnal). These data were analyzed by using chi-square test with odd ratio at 95% CL. Association between independent and dependent variables by controlling other variable were analyzed by multiple logistic regression. Results: Pesticides that frequently used in the area of study was Organophosphate and Carbamat The pesticide residue on raw vegetables was Carbofuran. Its concentration was 0.056 to 55.65 mg/kg. The highest residues was found in cabbage and it had exceeded the maximum limit of permitted residue. The pesticide residue of cooked vegetables was very low. Low concentration of cholinesterase enzyme (< 3600 U/L) was found in 3.8% women. More than 29% had low iodine status. Logistic regression analysis showed that women exposed to pesticide had 33 fold greater risk for IDD than that of without any pesticide exposure. Conclusions: The highest concentration of pesticide residue was obtained on raw cabbage and raw mustard green. It ranged from 2 to 10 times of maximum limit permitted residue according to Ministry of Health. Percentage of women who exposed by pesticide (carbamat) was 3.8%. It was showed that 29.3% of woman has low iodine status. Women exposed to pesticide had 100 risk 33 fold greater than that without any cyanide exposure. Suggestions: To minimize the hazardous effect of pesticide on health, it is suggested that the vegetables should be cooked property before consuming. It is necessary to do further research by takilg account the effect of cyanide air pollution inhaled besides cyanide from food. The more intensive control of using pesticide needs to be doneperiodically.
