This paper strives to diminish the well-known problem of advice discounting by invest-ing in a design study and creating a new information system supporting advisors. The prototype is mobile and provides multimedia interventions. These enable the advisors to activate advice takers on an emotional level with wow-factor episodes which strengthen advisors’ arguments. This study is af-fected by and evaluated in the practical field of home security advice. The evaluation points to the conclusion that the motivation to utilize given advice is higher in the IS-supported advisory service compared to the conventional approach of plain speech-based advice giving. The paper contributes general design implications facing advice discounting in mobile and collaborative advisory services. Furthermore, it supports home security provider in designing their mobile service encounter to in-crease the advice implementation.","PeriodicalId":309896,"journal":{"name":"European Conference on Information Systems","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123603946","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Via mobile devices, IT-applications enable students to interact with lecturers as well as their fellow students in large-scale settings, e.g. forum or chat. From a service perspective, lectures can be enhanced by the real-time provision of relevant and useful data. However, data created by the use of IT applications is not yet systematically used to support lecturers’ tasks, i.e,. by providing contents in a well-defined course setting. Feedback comes in the guise of information gathered through the adoption of said devices, e.g,. on what students have understood and which students are intellectually engaged. We are thus in the process of developing a dashboard, which collects information during the lectures to support lecturers’ increasing interaction. We collected design requirements based on experts’ testimonials and relevant literature. These have led to a mock-up which we designed according to literature and expert requirements. We introduce our planned steps to validate the proposed design guidelines through the implementation and evaluation of a proof-of-concept prototype dashboard.","PeriodicalId":309896,"journal":{"name":"European Conference on Information Systems","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128718904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These projects, known as offshore-outsourced software development (OOSD) projects, exhibit offshore-specific risks that cause them to be more prone to failures than other types of projects. We investigated 19 failed OOSD projects using the ground theory methodology and analyzed why project managers fail to act on the early warning signs (EWS) of failure. Managers based in India and Switzerland from both the client and vendor sides participated in this research to explore the early stages of project failure. Our analysis of the perception of EWSs of failure has resulted in a four-stage model that explains the process by which issues are resolved between clients and vendors. The stages are: monitoring EWSs, detecting EWSs, acknowledging issues, and addressing issues. We further examined, for each stage, the reasons behind project managers’ inability to manage the issues. We have contributed to the information systems literature on failure and on outsourcing by exploring the early failure stages in OOSD projects.","PeriodicalId":309896,"journal":{"name":"European Conference on Information Systems","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-06-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125479769","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An important reason for this lies in the fact that ESN are built on malleable technologies that do not lend themselves to immediate forms of workplace usage determined or prescribed by their features. Rather, their potential only manifests when people make sense of and incorporate them into their day-to-day work practices. In this paper we consolidate three years of case study research into ESN adoption and use. We are able to demonstrate empirically the contextual nature of ESN as an emergent phenomenon that takes on different forms in different organisational contexts. Drawing on this data we derive a theory of ESN usage, which employs a set of use cases to provide a better picture of the possibilities of ESN when appropriated into team, project or large enterprise contexts. This allows reflecting on ESN as a contextual phenomenon and social infrastructure and builds a basis for further research.","PeriodicalId":309896,"journal":{"name":"European Conference on Information Systems","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-06-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124670524","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we contribute to answering this question by investigating which methods and metrics organizations are currently applying for measuring ESS success. To do so, we have conducted 26 interviews with persons responsible for the deployment and use of ESS in their company. We found that measuring ESS success in the studied companies mainly focuses on the analysis of usage. We attribute this to the f act that ESS is primarily characterized by an abundance of user-generated content that can be easily analyzed. At the same time, companies still face difficulties in the evaluation of the business value of the platforms. We attribute this to some characteristics of ESS that we will discuss in this paper. O ur study is supposed to provide a comprehensive overview of the methods and metrics applied in practice t o measure ESS success.","PeriodicalId":309896,"journal":{"name":"European Conference on Information Systems","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-06-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115732236","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, these sources of corporate information are likely to be filtered before being published, either by investor relations departments or journalists. This bears the risk that the language is adapted to bias a decision support systems’ evaluations. Thus, unfiltered verbal communication should be a useful input for financial decision support systems since it is harder to manipulate. Using a sample of 200 earnings conference calls of German DAX firms, we analyze the relation of linguistic aspects of verbal management communication and the capital market reactions during the conference call. The results suggest that language aspects in the form of both sentiment and certainty assessments expressed by management influence the consequent capital market reaction. Our results show that unfiltered information released during conference calls is informative to the market and should therefore be considered as an input in decision support systems. As a consequence, these systems may profit from an increased robustness against impression management and from the possibility to react faster to new corporate information.","PeriodicalId":309896,"journal":{"name":"European Conference on Information Systems","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-06-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133766142","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper develops three experiments describing hypothetical situations in which \u0000respondents considered varying aspects of their personal information (e.g. storage, sharing with third \u0000parties) when (a) purchasing online a product, (b) a service or (c) conducting pure search online. Such scales are valuable feedback for medical treatment and care processes. As traditional paper-based questionnaires are time- and cost-consuming and may be affected by low patient compliance, our prototype allows patient monitoring and electronic data acquisition directly from the patient’s home. It enables real time representation and analysis of patient data and thus allows direct medical intervention by physicians. In developing the prototype, we followed a design science approach, developed design goals for the special case of patients suffering from impaired motor skills, and tested the prototype in a field study over the course of twelve weeks. We chose NFC since the interaction paradigm is intuitive and quickly learned, without prior knowledge being necessary. Our results indicate that NFC is almost as simple as filling out a paper-based questionnaire. During the study patients used the prototype autonomously and with minimal errors. Further, NFC technology was perceived as very intuitive and the information quality of each patient’s health status could be improved. Based on the findings we derive recommendations for future research and applications of NFC based electronic data capture systems.","PeriodicalId":309896,"journal":{"name":"European Conference on Information Systems","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114340172","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
