The research applies the theoretical framework of Homi K. Bhabha, specifically focusing on his concepts of Hybridity, Mimicry, and Ambivalence. Its primary objective is to discern how Julian's postcolonial identities evolve based on Homi K. Bhabha's theories and to elucidate how Julian sustains his cultural identity as the narrative unfolds. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, this research primarily sources its data from The Duke of Shadows, a 2008 novel comprising 314 pages and 21 chapters. The data collection method is centered around note-taking, and data analysis follows the methodology established by Miles and Huberman, encompassing data reduction, data display, conclusion drawing, and subsequent verification. The study's findings underscore that Julian's emerging mixed-blood cultural identity manifests through hybridity, mimicry, and ambivalence, reflecting the inherent ambiguity in his status as a mixed-blood individual. By the story's conclusion, Julian is depicted as maintaining his cultural identity by continuing to blend elements of Indian and British cultures, even after attaining the title of The Duke of Auburn.","PeriodicalId":309356,"journal":{"name":"J-SHELVES OF INDRAGIRI (JSI)","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139225954","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study, guided by principles outlined by Yin (2014), involves 30 participants enrolled in an English class. The research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the potential benefits of mind mapping in language education. The methodology employed purposive sampling and data triangulation, incorporating observation, testing, and data processing. Findings from a questionnaire reveal overwhelmingly positive student opinions toward the implementation of mind mapping, with 88.7% finding it useful for learning English, 93.3% for summarizing lessons, and 92.2% for organizing lesson contents. Participants express a preference for mind mapping in group work (52.5%) and pair work (48.3%). Overall, 84.3% enjoy the use of mind mapping in English class. In conclusion, this research provided valuable insights into the benefits of incorporating mind mapping in English language learning, aligning with contemporary educational research advocating for interactive and student-centric approaches. Nevertheless, there is still uncertainty regarding the efficacy of implementing first language instruction in English classrooms. The purpose of this study is to better understand the viewpoints of instructors on the usage of native tongues in English classrooms. The research methodology included qualitative data collection, with the objective of acquiring a broad spectrum of information. The English teachers at Santi Witya Serong School in South Thailand are the study's participants. The findings shows that teacher was sometimes using Thai language as an instruction in English classroom but most of the instruction is on English as their targeted language. The results demonstrate that teachers noted that first language implementation increased students' desire to learn English, gave them a chance to better understand challenging concepts in the language, and inspired them to ask bold questions that clarify linguistic elements. In an English-speaking classroom, student interaction and communication can become quite difficult, particularly when there is a tendency for the students to have poor English language skills. Using the first language in the target language classroom can increase students' enthusiasm and eagerness to study regardless of their background level and can be seen as a sign of respect for those who still require help learning English. It is noteworthy that although having a classroom where all of the language used is English is good for the students, it is also vital to pay attention to the state of the students.","PeriodicalId":309356,"journal":{"name":"J-SHELVES OF INDRAGIRI (JSI)","volume":"14 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139219061","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of the study is to determine the types of perlocutionary acts used in the movie through the main character’s utterances. The descriptive-qualitative method was applied to the research method. Techniques of data collection were carried out by searching, downloading, reading, watching, and coding the data. Techniques of data analysis were conducted by presenting, describing, interpreting, and drawing conclusions. The findings of the study show that perlocutionary acts really exist in the movie and are applied by the main character in order to influence others. There were 11 pieces of data found, which included four types of perlocutionary acts used by John Wick as the main character in the movie. Perlocutionary act serves as the effect of utterances from the speaker to the hearer, intentionally or unintentionally. Among the four types of perlocutionary acts, type 1 is the most dominant type because the speaker's utterance can be clearly understood by the hearer so that the expected effect of the utterances can be realized.
