IoT is the basis for smart cities, e-health, precision agriculture, among others. With this growth, the number of cyber-attacks against these types of devices and services has also increased. Each type of attack has its specific characteristics that allow its identification and prevention through machine learning techniques. However, classic machine learning techniques may have their performance compromised due to the non-stationary characteristics of these environments, together with the search for different types of vulnerabilities by attackers, attacks can suffer different types of mutations, in addition to the great possibility of new types of attacks arising over time. In this article, we propose an algorithm called Fuzzy Intrusion Detection System for IoT Networks (FROST) to identify cyber-attacks on IoT networks. FROST uses the concepts of fuzzy set theory to make the learning task more flexible, seeking to improve the performance in the classification of inaccurate data. In addition, FROST has a mechanism for identifying new types of intrusion online, during the classification of new instances. To evaluate our approach, we used the UNSW-NB15 data set and compared our method with another approach, very consolidated in the literature, which performs the same type of task. The results showed that FROST has a good performance in the classification of different types of attacks and that the fuzzy technique used helped to reduce errors and identify anomalies.","PeriodicalId":309189,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications (LATINCOM)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131495111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this scheme, the parameters of a planar antenna array are optimized via particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithms. Simulations show that, in terms of received power and maximum connectivity range, the beamforming antenna array outperforms the current standard scheme of a single isotropic antenna in most cases, even in those where the algorithm has not been trained on. Thus, the proposed scheme has the potential of improving road safety in critical urban intersections.","PeriodicalId":309189,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications (LATINCOM)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131614193","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While this low energy envelope have made them near ubiquitous, it is also a huge bottleneck in real world deployments. A fine balance needs to be achieved such that these devices can perform enough meaningful computation in a reasonable amount of time to justify their deployment while consuming a reasonable amount of power to keep them running for extended periods. A common method to achieve this is through computational offloading wherein these devices move the heavy computation away to the edge and the cloud thereby increasing the network lifetime. Offloading computation from these devices also improves their performance as the computations are performed by powerful hardware at the edge and the cloud. However, this increases power consumption and network latencies from the need to transmit and receive extra synchronization data. Optimum performance can be achieved by intelligently deciding if the computation should be offloaded or performed locally - a task that is inherently difficult given the transient nature of the network and the systems. In this work, we formulate a distributed network optimization problem to achieve a balance between performance and energy consumption. Our simulation results show substantial network latency reduction and overall reduced power consumption.","PeriodicalId":309189,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications (LATINCOM)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129321870","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We consider the case where the objective function satisfies Bellman's optimality principle without the constraints on which we place no conditions. We first show that these problems are a generalization of optimization in constrained Markov decision processes with finite horizon used in reinforcement learning and are NP-Hard. We then present a novel multi-survivor dynamic programming (msDP) algorithm that guarantees optimality at significant computational savings. We demonstrate this by solving 5G quantizer bit allocation and DNA fragment assembly problems. The results are very promising and suggest that msDP can be used for many applications.","PeriodicalId":309189,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications (LATINCOM)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130458215","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the context of resource allocation for RAN slicing, this paper addresses three major issues including maximizing the number of qualified users who are assigned the required bitrates, reducing the inter-slice QoS isolation between neighbouring cells caused by inter-cell interference and maximizing the fairness among all the slices. The proposed real number encoded Genetic Algorithm requires no prior knowledge about the network traffic models, provides high flexibility of slicing scheme, converges very quickly to evolve optimal/suboptimal solutions, and the dynamic weights of different objectives can adapt to the changes of users' scenarios.","PeriodicalId":309189,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications (LATINCOM)","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127024742","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The general trend in the NOMA literature is the so-called Power-Domain NOMA (PD-NOMA), which requires a strong power imbalance at the receiver between the superposed signals. Also, the focus in the literature has been on the derivation of information theoretic results, and practical bit error rate (BER) has not attracted much attention. In recent papers, some of the present authors revived an early NOMA concept, which we refer to as NOMA-2000. Performance of NOMA-2000 was investigated on AWGN channels and Rayleigh fading channels, and it was found that in most cases this technique significantly outperforms PD-NOMA. The purpose of this paper is to compare the BER performances of the two schemes on Rician fading channels, which provide a more accurate representation of the radio channel in dense urban environments. The results confirm that on Rician channels too PD-NOMA suffers a strong SNR degradation with static resource allocation and that NOMA-2000 provides substantially better performance. But with dynamic resource allocation and user pairing, both techniques achieve good performance as long as the channel overloading factor does not exceed some limit.","PeriodicalId":309189,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications (LATINCOM)","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127339026","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A five beam prototype feeding a 7-element array working at K-band has been fabricated and tested. The design was verified using the electromagnetic simulation software CST Microwave Studio, and a working prototype was manufactured by standard PCB fabrication. For this design, a metal fill in the gaps was used to replace the tracks to test a new technique for filling the tracks with brass, which allowed cost savings and decreased implementation time. The experimental results demonstrate that the design was adequate; the isolation between input ports and between output ports is below 15 dB in the range of 18.5 to 22 GHz. Furthermore, the measured results show a behavior similar to the simulations.","PeriodicalId":309189,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications (LATINCOM)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128476517","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These attacks are difficult to detect and have rarely been addressed in IEEE 802.15.4 wireless sensor networks (WSNs) based on CSMA/CA, and few experimental scenarios have considered the presence of an attacker in these networks. In this work, we evaluated the impact of the capture effect in an IEEE 802.15.4 WSN based on unslotted-CSMA/CA in the presence of an attacker, considering different values of back-off. We analyze the capture effect for multiple values of SINR and back-off in terms of Packet Reception Rate (PRR) and goodput. For instance, the PRR-to-SINR and the goodput show that for SINR values higher than 4.5dB, the PRR is almost 0.99, and the goodput 3048.38bps, despite the backoff exponent (BE) used value. Based on the evaluated metrics, we provide findings that offer a better understanding of the capture effect under jamming attacks in real scenarios.","PeriodicalId":309189,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications (LATINCOM)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124942495","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
