Today's approach to designing a product is not centred mainly on its creative/ aesthetic elements, but rather more and more on its functional purpose in order to adequately respond to the users' needs and to comply with a wide range of standards, rules and regulations imposed by the market. To satisfy all these requirements, any industrial design project needs to integrate Engineering, Ergonomics or other areas as from its early stages of conception. The area of Design depends on this interdisciplinary approach. For instance, to produce a sculpture, the artist only needs to choose the technology and the raw material. However, to produce a plastic bottle to contain water, specific chemical and mechanical strength testing is needed before selecting the most appropriate materials. This complexity in the field of Design led to innovative methodologies based on an interdisciplinary approach, in particular with the area of Engineering. This methodology is currently applied for projects of Industrial Design by the students of the Master Course in Product and Industrial Design hosted by the Department of Mechanical Engineering FEUP. The integration of the industrial design course in this Faculty allows to develop projects with the contribution of the various fields of Engineering and to benefit from existing partnerships with the industrial sector. The aim of this article is to demonstrate how this methodology was developed. It describes the working methods and processes of Engineering used by Designer as starting point for the development of new products.","PeriodicalId":309144,"journal":{"name":"2016 2nd International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128399146","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The course aims at providing new students with an introduction to Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering and to the main activities involved in the profession. For most of the students, the course is the first contact with electronic technology and equipment in a non-user perspective. In the academic year 2011-12, this course suffered a major reorganization. This paper presents the model, underlying assumptions and options followed when developing the new structure for the course. The main challenge was to achieve these goals, using a “hands-on” approach in a course unit with more than 100 students, making students create useful and working circuits (it is hard to motivate young students based on abstractions), and having a meaningful approach to electronics, avoiding cookbook recipes and effectively creating knowledge for the students. The modifications seem to have been well received by the students, as expressed by the course success rate and the students' responses to the University quality assurance enquiries.","PeriodicalId":309144,"journal":{"name":"2016 2nd International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"19 5-6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126947235","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several concepts and perspectives may lead to include or exclude ethical education of the curriculum. Teachers are the main actors in the curriculum development process, and the students' voice and perspective in this process usually remain unknown. On the other hand, students are the main potential damaged by the absence of an ethics educational project within their courses. It is considering this problem as a starting point, that the study presented here aims to communicate an investigation that intends to hear the students' voice, about their perspective on ethics education field, and about its practical implementation. This research is part of a case study and research-action. The results indicate that students are very receptive to this training component, and they consider that it should be included as mandatory in engineering courses. The results also show that students prefer a more practical training with `prescription' characteristics.","PeriodicalId":309144,"journal":{"name":"2016 2nd International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"214 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114762684","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study reports two years of observations of the behavior and experience, in the classroom, of student groups in classes of the 2nd year of an industrial design degree, when placed in contact with artefacts obtained by 3D printing which are used for an experimental test in the class. This was conducted in the course “Physics of materials”, in which we analyzed the contribution of practical experience in the learning process. The study aims to assess the degree of interest, motivation and understanding by students on academic content, which is often abstract, and of which practical demonstrations with resources prepared by 3D printing can become a learning facilitator. To this end, the learning styles of students were determined through the Honey-Alonso Learning Styles Questionnaire (CHAEA). This questionnaire allows teachers and students to know the learning styles and how each student interacts and relates in group activities. It includes a section on practical experience, motivation and the acquisition of knowledge of the students, who were unanimous in ranking high the importance of 3D printing technology in teaching activities in the classroom. As a collaborative learning resource, it is concluded that 3D printing can positively help teachers establish an improved teaching environment for students by including different methodological styles in the learning process. This is particularly effective in courses with a significant theoretical content. The increasing availability of 3D printing combined with the motivational aspect of its usage as a learning facilitator establish a revolutionary and powerful resource for active learning.","PeriodicalId":309144,"journal":{"name":"2016 2nd International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124866530","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a consequence, its main goal is to take into account students' aspirations and expectations during university programs and beyond, leading to an increased engagement in STEM careers. To accomplish these goals, a new, innovative and connected approach is presented, with a concept that encompasses the main stakeholders in scientific education, along with the main actors in society. A global and scalable education framework model is presented, aiming to provide guidelines for an improved collaborative approach to STEM education in the future.","PeriodicalId":309144,"journal":{"name":"2016 2nd International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120964219","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study was based on a questionnaire previously validated that contains two main parts: student characterization and a list of forty-four items, divided in six groups (Teacher Involvement Perception, Student Interest, Student-Teacher Interaction, Course Organization and Functioning, Infrastructures and Overall Satisfaction). Students classified each item in accordance with their level of agreement (1, Strongly Disagree, to 5, Strongly Agree). The main goal of the research was to look for the evolution of a set of these items along the first three curricular years and assess similarities and differences among courses and higher education institutions considered. The set of items was chosen in a way to achieve a better understanding of how the flow of knowledge in these courses is perceived in apparently different realities. The results show that, in general, students do not understand the flow of knowledge along the first three years of study. Despite the differences observed among the four higher education institutions, those differences do not lead to different realities between the two countries.","PeriodicalId":309144,"journal":{"name":"2016 2nd International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114229198","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This methodology is illustrated via a set of examples focused on specific engineering problems, but its scope can also be widened to other scientific areas. The examples presented on this paper allow concluding that this approach may be an interesting way to re-think and complement the perspective usually considered in the transmission of mathematical concepts. The use of a freeware finite element method computational package, FreeFEM++ may also be an important issue to stimulate the dissemination of this phenomena modelling and comprehension approach.","PeriodicalId":309144,"journal":{"name":"2016 2nd International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131016869","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Given the characteristics of design problems, product design and development courses, usually functioning according to project based learning methodology, constitute an opportunity to improve those skills. This paper presents a learning toolkit for product design and development courses based on the Design Thinking concept. The toolkit presented here includes four tools specifically conceived to promote students' creative and critical thinking skills. Some of these tools have already been applied in a didactic intervention integrated with an experimental study which aimed to evaluate the evolution of students' creative and critical thinking performance. Creativity and critical thinking tests pre and post intervention were applied. Results show evidence of students' creative thinking performance improvement. This article indicates that is possible to improve higher education students' thinking skills through carefully designed didactic interventions and instruments.","PeriodicalId":309144,"journal":{"name":"2016 2nd International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"17 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114101863","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Students' difficulties in learning these probability concepts were already discussed in previous researches. In this work, we present an attempt to use a reference matrix to analyze students' representations in a probability problem. In what concerns the results to our first analysis, when considering only the students with correct or partially correct answers, they revealed a better performance in the written language representation. Among students with a better overall performance in the correct and partially correct answers, the worst results were the answers with the symbolic representation. The tests analysis needs additional development including the wrong cases and the reference matrix of analysis needs further improvement so that in future students may overcome their difficulties in learning these concepts.","PeriodicalId":309144,"journal":{"name":"2016 2nd International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126359796","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cloud computing may seem like a rather unclear term, so we can have a look at the issue and its impact. Cloud computing is basically computer storage like a service that users can use cloud computing to store their files and retrieve them whenever they want, or use the cloud computing's power to edit or collaborate on files, without having to know any technical knowledge of how cloud computing works. The purpose of this paper is to identify ethical issues that result from the essential nature of cloud computing. It is also describes how these features are identified, and it concludes by discussing means of addressing them.","PeriodicalId":309144,"journal":{"name":"2016 2nd International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126137827","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
