This has major impact in engineering education, where students have to develop complex competences in order to make decisions that can influence the world and humankind. Teachers are reluctant regarding the effective practice of planning educational processes, identifying the lack of time and appropriate pedagogical training as main causes for the problem. Our aim is contribute to solve this problem. This paper presents the exploration of the capabilities of conceptualization of planning by the IMS-LD educational modelling language, through CADMOS authoring tool. To do so we used a learning object of a discipline of a Computer Engineering higher education course. Several specifications were made in CADMOS, based on different learning strategies common used in engineering education. The results show that IMS-LD and CADMOS can help and simplify the planning process for teachers, allowing them to implement changes, reuse and share planning products. Limitations were identified, but they do not preclude the use of the tool for planning.","PeriodicalId":309144,"journal":{"name":"2016 2nd International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130335421","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such role includes the ethical commitment to facilitate learning processes, removing barriers to adult students' entry and persistence in higher education. This paper describes the implementation of flexible learning pathways in a technology and industrial management graduate course targeted at adult students. Findings confirm that adult students welcome flexible learning pathways and choose the pathways that better suit their needs. Despite academic background differences success rates are adequate and similar for different learning pathways, showing that adult students are capable of bridging the gaps in their academic development. Findings also show that doubts related to the impact of some learning pathways on students' academic integration are unfounded. Considering the positive results it is concluded that flexible learning pathways, together with flexible entry requirements, promote equity and access conditions to adult students.","PeriodicalId":309144,"journal":{"name":"2016 2nd International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122620668","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its goals were to offer the students of mathematical courses (curricular units), more opportunities (besides contact hours/classes) to train the exercises, to clarify remaining and last minute doubts and to test their knowledge on the subjects throughout the semester, with the purpose of increasing academic success and mitigating dropout rates in mathematics curricular units/courses. In this scope, a program was implemented, covering, now, 642 students of six mathematics courses of engineering programs. It aims to provide additional support to the face-to-face classes, based on a distance education system, using technology and social networks to enhance learning, with multiple learning strategies (forum, videoconferences, multiple-choice tests, materials repository, etc). For the evaluation of the impact of this initiative, data was collected from different methods allowing us to realize that students are highly satisfied with the initiative and how it is being implemented, that they recognize the importance of the program for their academic success. Regarding students' academic results, the collected data revealed that final grades have increased, for all courses, since the CDM program has been implemented, as well as approval rates. Dropout rates after the first test are lower in courses supported by CDM. The main contribution of this work, is to describe how, in a high and constant academic failure and still relatively high dropout context, a distance learning program - able to be replicated in any course of any given higher education institution - was created and successfully mitigated this situation with the use of virtual platforms and social media to enhance formative assessment.","PeriodicalId":309144,"journal":{"name":"2016 2nd International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130221967","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a consequence, it is important to ensure that this birthright is protected and accessible to every child, including those with special needs. Professionals, such as therapists, are often in a position where they can take advantage of the inclusion of toy in their therapies with children, with habilitation and rehabilitation in mind. Although, toys are not all alike and they must be carefully thought in order to be able to fulfill the child's needs. This paper presents a proposal for an inclusive toy, entitled “HugMe”, especially designed for children with special needs, but that could be also used by other general developing children.","PeriodicalId":309144,"journal":{"name":"2016 2nd International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"49 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121007219","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Keep students motivated and strongly enrolled in classes is a very demanding task, pushing professors for continuous creativity in terms of experimental works. In the course of Metallic Materials, of the Integrated Masters Course in Mechanical Engineering of Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto, practical classes are structured around an experimental work where students have the opportunity to design heat treatments of a given steel or identifying a steel component, and use all the necessary equipment to predict and characterize the effect of the heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the steel. This experimental work, although very demanding, is extremely appreciated by the students, leading to great motivation for learning and an uncommon enrolment that is reflected on the excellent practical final grades. This paper presents the methodology adopted and the final grades obtained in the last five years, and finally presents a case study of identification of a steel rod used on the manufacture of a bicycle seatpost.","PeriodicalId":309144,"journal":{"name":"2016 2nd International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"644 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115828880","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

EPS aims to prepare future engineers to think and act globally, by adopting project-based learning and teamwork methodologies, fostering the development of complementary skills and addressing sustainability and multiculturalism. Since 2011, the EPS@ISEP programme offers a set of multidisciplinary projects to multicultural teams of students, so that each team element can bring to the project its previous knowledge and background experience. In the spring of 2013, a team choose to develop a pet tracker to provide pet owners with information regarding the whereabouts of their pets and, above all, to reduce the number of pets lost. After analysing related products, the team decided to add extra features for product differentiation. Combining a triple-axis accelerometer, a low cost GPS receiver and the GSM/GPRS communication technology, the team designed a system providing pet location, tracking, map display and activity monitoring services. This paper describes the development process of the Pet Tracker system, comprising a wearable device for pets and a website for pet owners.","PeriodicalId":309144,"journal":{"name":"2016 2nd International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"210 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114220766","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is important to enhance students' skills highlighting the value of applying problem specific knowledge, simulation tools and sound statistical techniques. This paper addresses the use of Aspen HYSYS by Portuguese chemical engineering master students to model distillation systems together with statistical experimental design techniques in order to optimize the systems. The paper presents a procedure followed in two projects beginning with the selection of two case studies from the literature, which the goal is to further improve with the help of design of experiments. The paper presents the work developed by the students in order to model steady-state and dynamic processes and optimize the distillation systems emphasizing the benefits of the simulation tools and statistical techniques in helping the students learn how to learn. Students strengthened their domain specific knowledge and became motivated to rethink and improve chemical processes in their future chemical engineering profession. The main results and conclusions provide a strong incentive from the teachers' perspective to a wider use of this kind of procedure by chemical engineering master students.","PeriodicalId":309144,"journal":{"name":"2016 2nd International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"142 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123456896","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using only one project, the students developed skills, in an integrated way, in the fields of the subjects involved. The structure of the project is described in detail. It is shown how the knowledge obtained in the different subjects is needed and how it connects together to answer the proposed challenges. We report the progress of the students' work, the main difficulties and the skills developed during this process. We conclude with a reflection on the main problems and gains that may arise in projects of this kind.","PeriodicalId":309144,"journal":{"name":"2016 2nd International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122029254","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Emphasis on innovation and entrepreneurship, design thinking and creativity have been recently pulled together into the teaching and research on product design and development. However, the shear breadth of the topic means that there is no single way of teaching and doing research on it. The present paper looks into the similarities and differences across three very similar product development masters courses at three distinct Portuguese higher education institutions - Instituto Superior Tecnico (IST) of the University of Lisbon, Instituto Politecnico do Cavado e Ave (IPCA), and ISCTE business school (IBS) of Instituto Universitario de Lisboa. Product Development and Entrepreneurship is taught at IST mostly for students of mechanical engineering, whereas Advanced Product Development Methodologies is taught at IPCA mostly for industrial design students and New Product Development is taught at ISCTE for business students. All three courses use the same methodology of assessment and the same overall syllabus, with distributed assignments and expected outcomes. However, the nature and emphasis of specific aspects of the students' projects are fundamentally different. The reasons for these differences are analyzed by the faculty involved, in the context of the students' background and goals and examples are given. Conclusions and recommendations are provided at the end.","PeriodicalId":309144,"journal":{"name":"2016 2nd International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126437830","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An increasing focus on the role of context, environment and systems in shaping human judgement means that engineers should be especially aware of the propensity for designs and implementations to affect the reasoning of people for whom they function as lived experience. Preparing engineers to recognize and work responsibly around these issues is a secondary reason to teach critical thinking in those programs.","PeriodicalId":309144,"journal":{"name":"2016 2nd International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (CISPEE)","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117041004","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
