In this paper, we propose a new face recognition system that can deal with the problem of corrupted images more efficiently. The new technique applies the principal component analysis to the phase spectrum of the Fourier transform of the covariance matrix constructed from the MPEG-7 Fourier Feature Descriptor vectors of the images. It will be shown that the proposed technique increases the face recognition rate when applied to images of low resolution and corrupted by noise, compared to other known methods.","PeriodicalId":308909,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Advances in Computational Tools for Engineering Applications","volume":"373 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130349455","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For example, excessive cutting tool wear could give rise to distortion, sometimes damaging machine parts; hence, incurring additional costs and complications in the production line. If the wear of the cutting tool can be predicted prior to damage, then machining can be altered to compensate for the damage resulting in better quality products. To accomplish this, an intelligent system applying efficient techniques is needed to predict cutting tool problems during machining. This paper proposes a methodology using artificial intelligence techniques. This methodology combines the selection and optimization abilities of genetic algorithm and the prediction characteristics of the neural network. The drive behind this work is to find an optimal trade-off in the system where the least needed sensory data is correlated to the cutting tool wear, without compromising on the accuracy. The objective of the improved system is to have a fast response time at a relatively cheap cost, while providing a warning in advance of potentially developing faults. The key advantage of this work is its ability to achieve accurate results and to cope with vast amount of highly unstructured data besides its robustness to noisy and sparse data.","PeriodicalId":308909,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Advances in Computational Tools for Engineering Applications","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115725563","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The most widely used way to solve fluid flow problems is to use pressure-correction methods based on algorithms such as SIMPLE (Semi Implicit Method for Pressure Linked Equations), SIMPLER (Revised), SIMPLEC (Consistent) or PISO (Pressure Implicit with Splitting of Operators). FLUENT and STAR CD are the main software capable of calculating and plotting fluid flows for specified problems, using pressure-correction methods. Nevertheless these programs, intended for commercial use, are not ‘user friendly’ and are therefore very difficult to use efficiently; furthermore once the program finds the answer it is not easy to understand how it got to it. The aim of this research is to implement the algorithms SIMPLE, SIMPLER, SIMPLEC and PISO into Matlab in order to create a ‘user-friendly’ program that a novice user can use straightforwardly and efficiently, whilst at the same time understanding what calculations the computer performs between the specification of the problem and the answers. Using this code we will then solve 2D flow problems with the different algorithms and compare their different performances (computer time, convergence and accuracy). This research should result in a program which is user-friendly and which uses a new improved algorithm (combination of the above or new altogether) that performs better than the existing ones, thereafter reducing computational times and improving accuracy.","PeriodicalId":308909,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Advances in Computational Tools for Engineering Applications","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115152641","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this approach, a log-spiral failure mechanism of the limit analysis is adopted. The study is carried using two deterministic models of earthquake loadings: The first model uses the seismic coefficient concept to identify the quasi-static representation of earthquake effects. In the reliability analysis, the performance function is based on the safety factor of the slope obtained by the strength reduction method. The second model uses Newmark method to calculate the permanent displacement at the toe of the slope as a result of the application of a time-history acceleration earthquake record at the base of the slope. The performance function is then defined with respect to the permanent displacement of the toe. For the assessment of the slope reliability, the Hasofer-Lind reliability index is considered. Therefore, the random variables are the cohesion and the angle of internal friction of the soil. Results show that the pseudostatic approach produces more conservative results than the Newmark sliding block analysis. The optimal slope height for a target reliability index is identified based on a reliability design procedure. Finally, the analysis is applied with the use of a case study of typical Lebanese slope to illustrate the above approaches.","PeriodicalId":308909,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Advances in Computational Tools for Engineering Applications","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124970144","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This approach allows taking into account important parameters that are generally ignored in simplified engineering methods as the soil deformability and frequency content of seismic input. Such parameters are critical in triggering instability under seismic loading. Analysis is conducted using elastoplastic soil behavior that could monitor the evolution of the slope state after an earthquake and clarify the most probable failure circles. It will focus on the slopes reinforcement in order to give recommendations for the most appropriate reinforcement scheme for vulnerable slopes under seismic loading.","PeriodicalId":308909,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Advances in Computational Tools for Engineering Applications","volume":"126 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121737160","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This actuation voltage that is actually a sinusoidal pattern of music rhythm will synchronize the artificial muscle movements with music harmony. To have this manner, first a sinusoidal pattern of music rhythm will be extracted. Principles of this pattern are strengths, tempos and phases of original music rhythm at different intervals. Then due to irregular and infinite range of beat strength, a fuzzy controller will be proposed to map beat strength of music rhythm in the plausible range of artificial muscle displacements. This fuzzy controller is responsible to output a cogent strain rate in response to the current interval beati and its calculated tempoi and certainly according to human perception. Frequency of the harmonic voltage signal which is the tempo of rhythm has also been adjusted to respect ratio 1:2 of DE response frequency. Results in the forms of plots and an offline simulation have demonstrated the performance of proposed actuation voltage.","PeriodicalId":308909,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Advances in Computational Tools for Engineering Applications","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124197954","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Not until recently, energy efficiency becomes another critical feature being pursued in a wide variety of products, especially for battery-powered devices. Various studies have been conducted for energy-efficient systems techniques. The most adopted ones are Dynamic Voltage Scaling (DVS) and Dynamic Power Management (DPM). However, all the previous research have disregarded an important aspect of these devices, namely rechargeability of the batteries. Several studies have explored the problem of scheduling real-time tasks in a monoprocessor rechargeable system. This paper summarizes the state-of-art research results of uniprocessor real-time systems under energy constraints. Then, we extend our work to deal with the problem of scheduling real-time tasks in a monoprocessor rechargeable systems.","PeriodicalId":308909,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Advances in Computational Tools for Engineering Applications","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126903952","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed system shall provide high data rates alongside a significant coverage area. It is known that WLAN makes available high data rates within a very restricted coverage. On the other hand UMTS provides comparatively extended coverage with low data rates. Prior papers planned to integrate WLAN with UMTS to get the best of both systems. Accordingly several types of integration solutions have been evaluated upon success of integration between the 3G and the IEEE 802.11a systems. This approach is especially pragmatic in shadow of the fact that the evolved UMTS system fielding had been delayed due to economic factors. To accomplish an inclusive handover between both technologies this work made use of Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) as signaling protocol and the Mobile IP which is the standard communications protocol to allow mobile device users to move from one network to another as a handover protocol. This approach is shown to be useful given that no major alterations in the Node Bs are required. Conceptual and practical comparisons showed that the use of mobile Stream Control Transmission Protocol (mSCTP) as transport layer protocol is considered the best approach for achieving interoperability between UMTS and WLAN. On the physical layer MPLS has been used to achieve load balancing and protection from congestions. We deployed different integration solutions for ensuring service continuity across different radio technologies that provide high-quality of service. Performance tests for different application traffic types and distributions have been conducted for both HTTP and Multimedia streaming.","PeriodicalId":308909,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Advances in Computational Tools for Engineering Applications","volume":"10 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120806064","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
