Vehicular ad-hoc networks combine the areas of sensor networks (data acquisition) with mobile ad-hoc networks (highly dynamic topology and lack of pre-existing infrastructure). One of the main challenges of vehicular ad-hoc networks is the data dissemination protocols capable of distributing road-state information among vehicles. This paper presents two candidates for dissemination protocols: a zone flooding protocol and a zone diffusion protocol. The two protocols combine ideas from sensor networks and geocasting to ensure that data is aggregated and distributed only in a bounded geographical area. We present a comparative simulation study of the two protocols evaluating their relative performance using conventional metrics (such as network load) as well as application-specific metrics (such as awareness). The simulation study has been conducted using the network simulator 2 (NS-2) and has highlighted key properties of the two protocols that can be used as a basis for selecting the most appropriate protocol.","PeriodicalId":308739,"journal":{"name":"39th Annual Simulation Symposium (ANSS'06)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-04-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131146918","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Movable objects such as chairs, boxes, bottles, etc. are quite common in real life. However, the computational cost will be high if the exact physics laws are used to model the behaviour of these objects. To reduce the computational cost of simulating moveable objects in Twilight City, a framework for qualitative behaviour simulation has been proposed and integrated into our simulation engine. Example results show that the proposed framework is successful in modelling the dynamic behaviour of various movable objects in Twilight City in terms of human players' perceptions and responsiveness of the system.","PeriodicalId":308739,"journal":{"name":"39th Annual Simulation Symposium (ANSS'06)","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-04-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134364911","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the slow convergence rate, O(N/sup - 1/2/) for N number of samples of the MC method has motivated research in quasi Monte-Carlo (QMC) techniques. QMC methods use low discrepancy (LD) sequences that provide faster, more accurate results than MC methods. In this paper, we focus on the parallelization of the QMC method on a heterogeneous network of workstations (HNOWs) for option pricing. HNOWs are machines with different processing capabilities and have distinct execution time for the same task. It is therefore important to allocate and schedule the tasks depending on the performance and resources of these machines. We present an adaptive, distributed QMC algorithm for option pricing, taking into account the performances of both processors and communications. The algorithm distributes data and computations based on the architectural features of the available processors at run time. We implement the algorithm using mpC, an extension of ANSI C language for parallel computation on heterogeneous networks. We compare and analyze the performance results with different parallel implementations. The results of our algorithm demonstrate a good performance on heterogenous parallel platforms.","PeriodicalId":308739,"journal":{"name":"39th Annual Simulation Symposium (ANSS'06)","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-04-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115158563","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work, we present a system engineering approach to model biological processes. In this approach, a biological process is modeled as a collection of interacting functions driven in time by a set of discrete events. We focus on the discrete event simulation platform, called \"iSimBioSys\", which we have developed for studying the dynamics of cellular processes in silico. As a test-bed for studying our approach we model the two component PhoPQ system, responsible for the expression of several virulence genes in Salmonella Typhimurium. We analyzed the effect of extra cellular magnesium on the behavioral dynamics of this pathway using our framework and compared the results with an experimental system. We also analyze the performance of iSimBioSys, based on the model biological system, in terms of system usage and response.","PeriodicalId":308739,"journal":{"name":"39th Annual Simulation Symposium (ANSS'06)","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-04-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129299524","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our simulator is made workload specific by a simple process to generate a set of C functions from a workload binary. It is as portable and retargetable as ordinary instruction emulators because the translation targets C code and works well with well-abstracted instruction definitions. The translation is also easy-to-implement without requiring any complicated analysis nor profiling. We also propose a set of simple optimization techniques for cache simulation which cooperates with the workload specific technique. A SimpleScalar-based implementation of these techniques results a significantly large performance improvement. Our evaluations with SPEC CPU95 exhibit that the maximum speedups over sim-fast, sim-cache and sim-outorder are 38-fold, 14-fold and 9.7-fold respectively, while the average numbers are 19-fold, 8.3-fold and 3.8-fold.","PeriodicalId":308739,"journal":{"name":"39th Annual Simulation Symposium (ANSS'06)","volume":"241 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-04-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116145232","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The continuous growth of the Internet, coupled with the increasing sophistication of the attacks, is placing stringent demands on firewall performance. Under such circumstances it becomes very vital to understand the fundamental behind firewalls and their operation. In this paper, we describe a simulation framework for the study and analysis of firewalls. Based on this framework, we design methodologies to inspect and analyze both multi-dimensional firewall rules and traffic logs information. The data used for this study was collected over a large set of firewall rules and traffic logs at tens of enterprise networks managed by a Tier-1 service provider. The analysis presented in the paper firmly state the importance of considering traffic information in the process of firewall optimization. To the best of our knowledge, ours is the first attempt to show the relevance of considering traffic characteristics to aid firewall optimization.","PeriodicalId":308739,"journal":{"name":"39th Annual Simulation Symposium (ANSS'06)","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-04-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123636283","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We call this phenomenon, \"function reuse\". Previously, we have shown such a behavior for some of the SPEC2000 integer benchmarks using HP ATOM instrumentation tools. In this paper, we modified a well-known architecture simulator, SimpleScalar, to analyze multiple benchmarks to investigate the function reuse behavior.","PeriodicalId":308739,"journal":{"name":"39th Annual Simulation Symposium (ANSS'06)","volume":" 27","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-04-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120934055","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The goal is to develop an algorithm that adapts known hidden Markov model algorithms for use with proxel-based simulation. It is shown how the forward- and Viterbi-algorithms can be directly integrated in the proxel-method. The possibility of integrating the more complex Baum-Welch-algorithm is theoretically addressed. Experiments are conducted to determine the practicability of the new approach and to illustrate the type of analysis that is possible.","PeriodicalId":308739,"journal":{"name":"39th Annual Simulation Symposium (ANSS'06)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-04-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129718096","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Chief issues related to such systems include: (a) the permanence of environment monitoring, (b) the mobility management of sensors, (c) the ad-hoc communication method, and (d) the security of responsive messages. This paper presents an ad-hoc architecture and communication and mobility schemes to offer an efficient monitoring system in an environment where targets have unpredicted motion. Moreover, it introduces a security solution. The paper concludes by presenting the simulation results in order to validate the effectiveness of the proposed schemes.","PeriodicalId":308739,"journal":{"name":"39th Annual Simulation Symposium (ANSS'06)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-04-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129746772","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
