Plastic optical fibre is used to measure the bending angle by measuring the changes of light intensity using tilt angle loss measurement approach. To define the bending range of the sensor configurations under investigation, the fibre was bended at several bending angle for a 30 second period purposely to reduce the effect of light source fluctuation and drift in measurement. Instead, the EO modulator can also be employed as sensing instrument with some modification. In this paper, we demonstrate the performance study of a polymer EO phase modulator compared with the commonly used waveguide material LiNbO3 to obtain better low insertion loss and length extension. However in most cases, evanescent field is not maximized and thus the performance of the sensor is not optimized. It is the aim of the paper to optimize the silicon nitride linear waveguide through simulation by using 3D FD-BPM. The resultant investigation shows that evanescent field is maximized at TM polarization, 0.9μm thickness and 4μm width waveguide. The sensor was coated with graphene oxide (GO) by drop-casting technique. The dynamic response of GO nanostructured thin film coated on optical multimode fiber tip exposed to ethanol liquid was investigated. GO thin film was characterized via Raman microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The reflectance decreased by 37% when the fiber tip was exposed to 5% concentration of ethanol in water.
