The subject of analysis was the oldest preserved catalogue of priors, kept in the collections of Dominican archive in Cracow – this particular catalogue was set down at the beginning of the 17th century. The other most important sources concerning the history of the Oświecim Dominicans were also discussed, works that can be found in archives in Cracow, Wroclaw, Lviv and Rome. Among the Oświecim priors, one can find Father Mikolaj Ursinus, who was behind the plan to divide the Polish province into two. One can also find royal confessors, preachers at Wawel Cathedral, and figures who likewise served as prior of Cracow’s Dominican monastery. One of the priors was Father Leonard Niezabitowski, who, according to Dominican tradition, translated the Bible into Polish.","PeriodicalId":30842,"journal":{"name":"Folia Historica Cracoviensia","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48093844","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
{"title":"Analiza źródłoznawcza legendy o pierścieniu księżnej Kingi","authors":"M. Gil","doi":"10.15633/FHC.3411","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.15633/FHC.3411","url":null,"abstract":"The author has carried out a comparative analysis of sources pertaining to the legend of Kinga’s ring. Kinga was the daughter of Hungarian King Bela IV, and she wed Boleslaus the Chaste (Boleslaw Wstydliwy), Duke of Cracow and Sandomierz. According to a life of the duchess written by an anonymous hagiographer in 1317–1329, she journeyed to Hungary and asked her father to bestow a salt mine upon her. After her request was granted, Kinga cast a gold ring into the mine, and some time later it was found in a block of salt that came from the first pit (fovea) to be mined in Bochnia (Poland). Certain scholars have detected in this legend echoes of actual events, duly ascribing mining specialists from Hungary a key role in the development of salt mining in Poland (Adam Naruszewicz, Karol Szajnocha, Hieronim Łabecki, Franciszek Skibinski, and also several Hungarian historians). Even Jozef Piotrowicz, who emphatically rejected such an interpretation of the legend, reflected that there was ‘a grain of truth in it’. The collation of passages that refer to the oldest hagiographic tradition about this Hungarian princess has enabled the author of this study to clarify the relations among the works containing these references (Traska’s Annals, The Chronicle of Dzierzwa, The Chronicle of Greater Poland, The Life and Miracles of Duchess Kinga). However, above all, this undertaking allowed the author to establish the milieu which contributed to the dissemination of the legend, namely the Franciscans of southern Poland, most probably the Poor Clares of Stary Sącz. Aided by these religious communities, the hagiographer explained how deposits of rock salt appeared near Cracow, whereas the fact of the actual establishment of the Bochnia was only of secondary importance to him. Kinga symbolically married salt for the good of her adopted homeland, thanks to which salt deposits miraculously appeared near Cracow, having multiplied in a characteristic manner. It was only Late Medieval and Early Modern writers who started to interpret the legend in a different way, stressing that the wife of Boleslaus the Chaste contributed to the mining of the first pit at Bochnia. The account of the discovery of the ring should thus not be treated as a testimony to any kind of influence of Hungarian specialists on the development of Polish salt mining.","PeriodicalId":30842,"journal":{"name":"Folia Historica Cracoviensia","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46840794","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

That year, Vaclav Hanka sued David Kuh, the founder and editor of the Prague newspaper “Tagesbote aus Bohmen”, for defamation, after the latter published a series of anonymous articles in his paper, accusing Hanka of forging The Queen’s Court Manuscript and The Green Mountain Manuscript . For several decades, both works influenced the shaping of the Czech political nation, and as it later transpired, the Austrian police were behind the attacks on their authenticity. Further piquancy is added by the fact that thirty years later, Hanka was indeed recognised as the author of the aforementioned manuscripts.","PeriodicalId":30842,"journal":{"name":"Folia Historica Cracoviensia","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47315181","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
