{"title":"Jakub Zabarella, autor dedykacji dla króla Stefana Batorego","authors":"Zbigniew Liana","doi":"10.15633/FHC.3736","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.15633/FHC.3736","url":null,"abstract":"In 1577, Stefan Bathory King of Poland decided to create a college in Krakow modelled on the royal college in Paris. To this end, he invited eminent foreign scholars to lecture there. One of them was Paduan philosopher and logician Giacomo Zabarella (1533−1589). He rejected the king’s generous offer, but dedicated to him his own work Opera logica (1578). This fact has been variously described in European historiography due to an erroneous indication given by one biographer. the present article is an introduction to the edition of the dedication and presents its historical and historiographical context. It opens with a presentation of Giacomo Zabarella’s life and work and his exceptional position in the academic world of the era. Next, the historical context of Bathory’s invitation and its historiography are discussed. the third section contains socio-economic aspects of the invitation and Zabarella’s refusal as well as a cultural and literary context of his dedication. {"title":"Tragiczny koniec królowej Bony Sforzy i sułtanki Roksolany","authors":"Marco Jačov","doi":"10.15633/FHC.3735","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.15633/FHC.3735","url":null,"abstract":"This is an attempt to compare events related to the tragic end of the life of Queen Bona Sforza d’Aragona and Hurrem Sultan (also known as Roxelana). The main portion of the story is preceded by a section relating Bona’s journey from Poland to Italy and outlines the context of political connections to the House of Habsburg. Accordingly, reasons for the grant of the loan by Bona Sforza to Philip II King of Spain are discussed. As we know, this put a tragic end to the life of the Polish queen. Even if Bona Sforza was a victim of Habsburgs’ actions aimed against her, with a considerable participation of Gian Lorenzo Pappacoda, Roxelana – treated in this text a reference point for Bona – fell victim to her own intrigues. Bona’s and Roxelana’s political activity focused on the same area in Europe. Roxelana’s acts led to the death of two sons of Suleiman the Magnificent: Mustafa and Bayezid. In turn, Bona, who was defeated by the Habsburgs, abandoned her daughter Isabella, who fought against the dynasty. Perła staropolskiej sztuki sakralnej oraz bezcenne źródło historyczne","authors":"Kazimierz Łatak","doi":"10.15633/FHC.3737","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.15633/FHC.3737","url":null,"abstract":"The Album of the Archconfraternity of the Blessed Sacrament and Five Wounds of Our Lord ff Jesus Christ at Kazimierz in Krakow was made in the 17th century, but its oldest section duplicates the contents of an earlier catalogue comprising entries from 1551–1612. The album is a large-sized manuscript volume, an original and ambitious work, a gem of the Old Polish sacred art, a genuine document of several cultural epochs and an invaluable historical source. However, to date it has been largely ignored by researchers, although it has been referred to and used as a source on multiple occasions in studies on the Corpus Christi Church and the history and resources of the monastic archive. The album had a representative function, and the very act of opening. its pages must have evoked excitement as the book was beautifully executed. In its form, shape, and artwork, it resembles lavishly decorated Mediaeval and Renaissance codices. Many of its sheets are in fact whole-page paintings with figural scenes; it also features impressive floral and heraldic elements as well as initials. Despite the passage of four centuries since its inception, it is still in use, and has therefore become a link between the past and the present. Its scholarly, cognitive and application-related value was noticed by researchers only in the early 20th century. It was Rev. Jozef Augustyn Blachut, author of the first modern monograph of the monastery, published in 1905, who introduced the album into scholarly circulation. Today, it is one of the most frequently consulted sources in the archive of the monastery, drawing attention of historians, art historians, culture historians and religious geography historians, but also culture enthusiasts who visit the monastery and its library. Gąsowski","doi":"10.15633/FHC.3602","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.15633/FHC.3602","url":null,"abstract":"The disappearance, breakup, or perhaps the dissolution of the Habsburg monarchy into nonexistence in the last several days of the “Great War” did not mean that time and history disappeared without a trace. For it left a rich and varied heritage that consists of intertwined collective and cultural memories that transform over time into a mythology. An important place in that Central-European, Habsburg mythology is taken by the myth of Galicia. Evidence of its existence and vitality is its emergence several years ago, as unexpected as it was intensive, in the commercial realm. That was made possible by falling back onto heritage, remembrance, and myth, and not by – even an elementary – knowledge of the reality under this banner. The Kingdom of Galicia was wiped out from the territory it used to occupy by the disaster of two wars. Yet a memory of it, evidently strongly rooted, managed to survive that unfavourable time and today it is still very much alive, even though much transformed. The time that has passed, together with all the historical tremors during that time, has resulted in a kind of deconstruction from which a new, mythical form of Galicia emerged. It began to live its own peculiar life which has hardly anything in common with the original. The realm in which its presence is best visible today is what can broadly be called “commercial use”. The cultivation of the current, predominantly commercial functionality of Galicia is only rarely accompanied by a reflection on the sense or reason for the cherishing of its mythology, which is what is actually taking place.
