Several analyses were conducted to investigate differences in travelers' preferences for particular forms of information. The results suggest that textual–visual information formats (i.e., photos and/or videos combined with text) have a greater influence on motivation to travel than text-only information. On the other hand, experienced travelers tend to contribute text-only information when spreading eWOM. This study discusses the reasons for this gap and the individual differences in travelers' information format preferences when retrieving and diffusing travel-related information online. Managerial implications for destination marketers and user-generated content platform managers are suggested.","PeriodicalId":306718,"journal":{"name":"J. Inf. Technol. In this context, evaluation of the communicative efficacy of websites becomes a ‘must’ for exploiting the power of such communication channels. In this paper, we propose a systematic method and a tool that supports communicative efficacy evaluation. We assume content coverage of the organization’s strategies as the main high-level content requirement for the organization website. The tool is based on a generalpurpose semantic annotation framework that allows identifying concepts related to the detailed content requirements. The applicability and feasibility of our method is verified on a case study that compared the communicative efficacy of a set of tourist destination websites.","PeriodicalId":306718,"journal":{"name":"J. An experiment was carried out where participants were instructed to explore a website presenting a popular place: Venice, Italy. Participants were exposed (or not) to street sounds when exploring the website and had the possibility to control (or not) the photography (using a 360° navigation with their mouse) displayed on the website. The results showed that higher evaluation was associated with sounds and mouse control. The Theory of Media Richness was used to explain our results and the managerial implications for tourism were discussed.","PeriodicalId":306718,"journal":{"name":"J. Inf. Technol. Tourist recommender applications help tourists by presenting a personal selection. Providing adequate tour scheduling support for these kinds of applications is a daunting task for the application developer. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate how existing models from the field of Operations Research (OR) fit this scheduling problem, and enable a wide range of tourist trip planning functionalities. Using the Orienteering Problem (OP) and its extensions to model the tourist trip planning problem, allows to deal efficiently with a vast number of practical planning problems.","PeriodicalId":306718,"journal":{"name":"J. As to be expected, the checklists and manuals we have long searched for that offer us instruction on how to encounter this phenomenon are for the most part lacking. This is not surprising when you consider confronting the challenges of an extraordinarily vague formulation. In workshops, symposiums, and congresses, people throw catchwords and technical terms about in an effort to describe what Web 2.0 stands for and determine its apparent meaning for tourism. Profound issues and attempts at explanations are rare indeed, and empirically verified statements are almost wholly lacking. Therefore, the aim of this article is to deliver a selection of sociological explanatory approaches, thereby creating the theoretical starting blocks for further research efforts. Consequently, the objective here cannot be to explain the theories in their entirety and discuss in detail their individual contributions to the various Web 2.0 phenomena. Instead, the goal is to bring to light starting points for a theoretically founded debate on the subject. The overview in the form of a table at the end of the contribution describes selected sociological approaches and puts them into the context of Web 2.0 and tourism by way of examples.","PeriodicalId":306718,"journal":{"name":"J. Their planning is a fundamental process because they contribute to the tourist and economic development of the territory. Assessment of the economic effects of the events becomes, therefore, an important managerial instrument of planning and control. The traditional approach for assessing the economic impact of a cultural event is based on data relating to preferences and intentions of participants collected through questionnaires. This article introduces an innovative methodology that applies action-tracking systems for collecting behavioral data on the fruition of the tourist destination offer. These data improve the estimates of the whole economic impact of cultural events calculated through Input-Output models (direct, indirect, and induced effects). The methodology has been formalized on the basis of the results of the RFID for Festivals relative to the 2008 editions of two international events in the town of Trento.","PeriodicalId":306718,"journal":{"name":"J. Recommendation techniques can increase the usability of mobile systems providing personalized and more focussed content, hence limiting the negative effects of information overload. In this paper we review the major issues and opportunities that the mobile scenario opens to the application of recommender systems especially in the area of travel and tourism. We overview major techniques that have been proposed in the last years and we illustrate the supported functions. We also illustrate specific computational models that have been proposed for mobile recommender systems and we close the paper by presenting some possible future developments and extension in this area.","PeriodicalId":306718,"journal":{"name":"J.
