To determine the resistance of potato gene pool accessions to viruses in the southern forest-steppe of Ukraine and to select starting material for breeding.\u0000Results and Discussion. Our analysis of the climate changes for the period of 1955–2018 revealed that the unfavorable weather/climatic conditions during spring planting of tubers, as a result of which weakened plants were more easily depressed by viral infections, were the primary cause of potato cacogenesis in the southern forest-steppe of Ukraine. It was found that significant deviations from the multi-year average temperature and amount of precipitation contributed to the intense mass manifestation of symptoms of viral diseases or under favorable weather/climatic conditions, on the contrary, viral diseases were not visually detected. Studies have shown that the main factor in resistance to viral degeneration of potato varieties is the genotype, and its development and expression depend on growing conditions. It is also important to take into account emergence of new strains of viruses requiring continuous monitoring. Virus resistance of the varieties was visually determined. In order to identify viruses and study their morphology, electron microscopy, EIA and PCR were used.\u0000Conclusions. To determine the adaptability of modern winter bread wheat varieties by homeostaticity and breeding value of their yields in the northeastern forest-steppe of Ukraine.\u0000Results and Discussion. The adaptability of modern winter bread wheat varieties was determined by homeostaticity and breeding value of their yields in the northeastern forest-steppe of Ukraine. It was found that, in mid-tall genotypes, homeostaticity (Hom) ranged 22.6 to 84.5 with a higher breeding value (Sc = 3.49–6.32) compared to semi-dwarf accessions (Hom = 18.9–56, 3 and Sc = 3.16–4.99, respectively). Korovaina (Hom = 84.5) and Vyhadka (Hom = 75.8) (UKR) are highly homeostatic mid-tall accessions. As to the semi-dwarf group, MV Nador (HUN) was the best in terms of this trait (V = 10.8%; Hom = 56.3). We demonstrated that the shares of the middle-homeostatic accessions were 28.6% in the mid-tall group and 30.8% in the semi-dwarf group; the shares of the low-homeostatic accessions were 57.1% and 69.2%, respectively. We selected sources with the highest breeding value for this parameter of adaptability, which exceed its average value in the experiment (Sc = 4.9). They include Metelytsia Kharkivska (Sc = 6.32), Korovaina (Sc = 6.16), Raihorodka (Sc = 6.00), Vyhadka (Sc = 5.74), Zoloto Ukrainy (Sc = 5.63), Darynka Kyivska (Sc = 5.42), and Hubernator (Sc = 5.08) (UKR). The shares of sources distinguished due to their breeding value are 50% in the mid-tall group and 38.5% in the semi-dwarf group.\u0000Conclusions. Korovaina (Hom = 84.5; Sc = 6.16) and Vyhadka (Hom = 75.8; Sc = 5.74) (UKR) are the most significant mid-tall genotypes that combine high homeostaticity and breeding value. The sources of adaptability identified in the study of homeostaticity and breeding value are valuable starting material to create new highly adaptive and promising varieties of winter bread wheat in the northeastern forest-steppe of Ukraine.

In 2016 – 2018, 5984 samples were introduced to the Centre for Plant Genetic Resources of Ukraine using various information sources, including 2093 samples from Ukraine and 3891 from foreign countries. The greatest samples variety was attracted by cereals, leguminous, fodder, medicinal and essential oil, vegetable and melon crops, corn. Seeds of new forms having valuable properties are attached from research and breeding institutions of Ukraine. The samples of foreign origin were most actively introduced through cooperation with research institutions of Russia, Belarus, and Moldova. A significant number of samples came from genebanks in Europe: the Czech Republic, Italy, France, Germany, the Netherlands; Asia: Kazakhstan Turkey, Israel, China as well as from South (Mexico) and North America - USA, Canada. The ways of pre-adaptation and adaptation of samples from geographically remote regions for use in Ukraine are indicated. To collect local cultural and wild-growing samples of different crops, collecting missions were carried out in the central and southern regions of the forest-steppe and northeastern regions of Ukraine during which 1641 gene pool samples were collected. For the Red Book species of plants and species that are not listed in the Red Book of Ukraine but are rare or are threatened with extinction under natural conditions, a points have been identified for possible arrangement of in situ conservation reserves. A number of objects with a rich genetic diversity of fodder and medicinal plants have been identified, on which it is necessary to monitor coenoses and ensure in situ conservation. The introduced samples were transferred for use in research and breeding programs in Ukraine.\u0000\u0000Conclusions. The definition of a model of ecologically adapted in Ukraine genotypes of different crops that are carriers of valuable traits from countries with similar climatic conditions as well as from geographically remote regions, has made it possible to increase the efficiency of introduction and to more specifically search and attract to the National Genebank the plant samples with the necessary manifestation levels of economic and biological traits.

To study and assess the environmental adaptability of feed and seed productivity of alfalfa collection accessions under high soil acidity by determining its components - regression coefficient and stability variance.\u0000Results and Discussion. Breeding nurseries were established by summer coverless sowing: gutter sowing (row spacing 15cm) - for feed productivity; wide-row sowing (45cm) – for seed productivity. The record plot area was 3 m2, in two replications. To assess the feed productivity, we measured the dry matter yield of four mowings (budding phase); to assess the seed productivity, we determined yield from the first mowing. The environmental plasticity coefficient for the feed productivity (bi) varied across the studied accessions from ̶ 1.24 to 2.33. bi> 1 was found in 16 accessions, but the dry matter yields from most of them were significantly lower than that from the check variety, Syniukha. Low values (0 – 0.34) of the stability variance (Si2) indicate that the obtained empirical values differ little from the theoretical ones. As to the seed productivity, bi> 1 was detected in 16 accessions, 8 of which exceeded the check variety, Syniukha, in terms of seed yield. The stability variance varied in a fairly wide range from 0.12 to 308.93. The obtained values of Si2 confirm the difficulty of alfalfa breeding for increased seed productivity compared to feed productivity, which are often positively affected by opposite hydrothermal conditions: drought positively affects the seed yield, while excessive rainfall boost the feed productivity. \u0000Conclusions. Alfalfa accessions with a relatively strong response to the improvement of growing conditions with increased feed and seed productivities were selected; they can be used as starting material in breeding for these traits: Radoslava, Olha, Vavilovka (Rodnychok) (Ukraine); Evrika 1 (RF); Ferax 58 (Canada).

The environmental plasticity and stability of collection winter triticale accessions were determined for yield in the right-bank forest-steppe of Ukraine. Having assessed the yields, we found that the average yield across the studied accessions for the given period amounted to 5.55 t/ha (V = 11%). The maximum average yield for the study period was recorded for Hermes (7.44 t/ha), Pavlodarskyi (6.75 t/ha), Soiuz (6.62 t/ha), Sviatozar (6.28 t/ha), Bohodarske (6.19 t/ha), Nina (6.16 t/ha), Markiian (6.08 t/ha), Nykanor, and AD 256 (6.03 t/ha). The most plastic cultivars that were capable of significantly increasing their yields under favorable conditions were identified: Sviatozar (bi = 2.67), Nykanor (bi = 2.59), Beta (bi = 2.41), Navarro (bi = 1.92), Myronivskyi (bi = 1.91), and Hermes (bi = 1.85). These accessions are noticeable for high yield capacity and are able to maximize their yields under favorable conditions. The breeding value of a genotype (SCV), which characterizes both yield and its stability, ranged 0.18 to 5.02. The following accessions stood out due to this indicator: Nina (5.02), Maiak (4.68), Tornado (4.42), Dinaro (3.95), Parus (3.80), and Titan (3.77). We selected accessions with good compensatory effects: Maiak (0.12), Tornado (0.24), Uragan (0.34), Nina (0.36), Tsekad 22 (0.44), Dinaro (0.56), Parus (0.74), Titan (0.75), and Desiatynne (0.79). In the other accessions, destabilizing effects predominated (Kgі = 1.05–9.80).\u0000Conclusions. The study showed that the general adaptability was higher in the most high-yileding accessions: Hermes (1.89), Pavlodarskyi (1.20), Soiuz (1.07), Sviatozar (0.73), and Nina (0.61). As to the specific adaptability, the following cultivars were distinguished: Maiak (0.05), Tornado (0.10), Uragan (0.14), Nina (0.15), and Tsekad 22 (0.18). These accessions are characterized by high and stable yields under different hydrothermal conditions.
