It focuses on the work of architect, Michael Reynolds, who has been experimenting with radical house designs and construction techniques over the past three and half decades. He addresses pollution, climate change and resource depletion by the provision of self-sufficient, off-the-grid, ecological housing constructed substantially from 'waste' such as used car tyres and beverage containers. Passive heating and cooling, food production, water catchments, renewable energy, solar hot water, grey-water recycling and sewage treatment are all integrated into his designs, which he calls \"Earthships – independent vessels – to sail on the seas of tomorrow\".","PeriodicalId":306645,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Design","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130726588","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These factors are considered in terms of their connections to contemporary discussions about sustainability. A particular artefact has been selected, the Japanese shakuhachi flute, which is described in terms of its design, use and meaning. The characteristics that emerge are compared to those of modern electronic goods and more generally applicable priorities are developed in which design is considered a manifestation of, and contributor, to meaning.","PeriodicalId":306645,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Design","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115896902","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unfortunately, human and artworks requirements are characterised by different values of the physical indoor parameters that, occasionally, could become conflicting. In the paper, these problems are addressed by means of a literature analysis, with a specific attention to thermal comfort conditions of people. The possibility of finding common ranges of values for both requisites is finally discussed. Some recent technical recommendations on the matter have also been considered for indicating some HVAC equipment and appliances to be adopted in museums.","PeriodicalId":306645,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Design","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133002033","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A diverse range of EMSs have been proposed in the literature. These methods have been reviewed and assessed in this paper according to their suitability for evaluation of operational environmental performance. Existing methods present limitations in accommodating changes in environmental performance, and do not incorporate fundamental process analysis to assess how the actual performance varies from what is theoretically achievable. A novel engineering-based risk evaluation framework is proposed to overcome some of the identified issues.","PeriodicalId":306645,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Design","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129815037","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the focus on preventing such toxic pollutions from the very source of material selection in product design has yet to gain sufficient research effort. To meet this critical need, this paper studies decision-making in material selection concerning not only traditional cost and quality, but also the potential toxic impact throughout the product's life cycle. This research presents a novel approach to integrate concerns on product cost, quality and toxic impact in material selection process.","PeriodicalId":306645,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Design","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130476218","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An IGDT decision strategy favours the design(s) that can endure the most estimation error while still guaranteeing no worse than some 'good enough' critical level of performance. In this paper, a simple automotive oil filter design selection example with severe uncertainty is formulated and solved using an IGDT approach. Implications of IGDT to life cycle engineering design problems are discussed, as are potential limitations that could be encountered when solving more complex problems.","PeriodicalId":306645,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Design","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-02-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133371979","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Three different product case studies show how to proceed in developing environmentally improved products. These case studies have been carried out in collaboration with industry and the identified product improvements have been realised in commercial products, which are now available on the market. The first case study is an alpine ski, the second is office equipment (Digital Pocket Memo (DPM)) and the third is a new Golf Swing Analyser. Obtaining green product concepts using the ECODESIGN Toolbox with and without having a reference product to start with are presented.","PeriodicalId":306645,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Design","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-02-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127609316","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Indeed, many sports products require high levels of energy to manufacture, they exploit low-paid labour in the developing world, and they are conceived typically with little consideration of recyclability and reusability, or sustainability in general. It has not been of major concern to this $500 billion global industry to date. This paper puts forward the view that this industry will have to embrace the latest advances in the fields of technology and engineering in order to be more environmentally friendly and sustainable in the 21st century.","PeriodicalId":306645,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Design","volume":"106 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-02-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123452133","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Also, transportation accounts for around 25% of greenhouse emissions worldwide, with around 90% coming from road vehicles. This situation is further complicated by the fact that oil reserves are running out. For this reason, the automotive industry supported by relevant governing bodies is rapidly exploring alternative propulsion solutions (such as hybrid, electric and hydrogen powered vehicle technologies). This paper presents the main objectives and progressive findings of an EU funded research project titled 'StorHy ? Hydrogen Storage Systems for Automotive Applications'. This research project was conducted in partnership between a number of participating organisations under the auspice of the EU Thematic Priority 6 program titled 'Sustainable development, global change and ecosystems'. The integrated project, StorHy, aims to develop robust, safe and efficient on-board vehicle hydrogen storage systems suitable for use in hydrogen-fuelled fuel cell or internal combustion engine vehicles. Research work covering the whole spectrum of hydrogen storage technologies (compressed gas, cryogenic liquid and solid materials) is carried out with a focus on automotive applications. The aim is to develop economically and environmentally attractive solutions for all three storage technologies.","PeriodicalId":306645,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Design","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-02-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128953967","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The exploration is an attempt to deal with a variety of sustainable concerns associated with contemporary mass-produced material culture. Two rather distinct, but interrelated approaches to sustainable design are recognised and discussed. One contributes to improving product design within the current product production system, the other is a more fundamental approach that begins to redefine the role of the product designer, and offers opportunities that are not available to, or much more difficult to address within, conventional industrial design practice for mass-production.","PeriodicalId":306645,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Design","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-02-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132311415","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
