However, it is a well-known fact that most of them do not ride as well as conventional big wheel bicycles, and the ride is often described as 'twitchy', 'wobbly' and 'less stable'. A considerable number of casualties involve single-vehicle accidents which can be correlated to their dynamic stability performance. This paper relates the vehicle frame design with safety performance. By using a well-defined mathematical model, the dynamic stability of different personal mobility devices was compared. The research confirms the lesser stability in existing small wheel electric scooters and bicycles. However, the investigation has also found that the reason is not so much the size of the wheel, but the inadequacy of current design practice to properly account for the complex influence of wheel size on stability. Finally, a case study has been presented to illustrate that current designs of small wheel PMDs can be improved for better stability and safety.","PeriodicalId":306645,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Design","volume":"189 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132650082","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The designers' perceptions of the water theme are studied from social, cultural, and environmental perspectives. According to the results, designers showed strong skills in solving water-related problems, such as conservation and protection. They also offered innovative solutions and unique ideas based on such strategies as the innovative use of natural water resources and material selection. An original design concept system was identified - a hybrid of equipment - that explored on a large-scale the sustainable resources of the sea. The main findings of this research led to a proposed concept mapping of the water theme, and its practicality was illustrated through a case study entitled Mobile Greenhouse Farm System.","PeriodicalId":306645,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Design","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114956373","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, in order to adapt to modern use, optimise and improve the traffic system and parking configuration of historic district based on goal of preservation and development may after all be accepted as a kind of alternative approach. There are many evidences shows that an appropriate optimisation on traffic system and parking configuration can enhance the connectivity and pedestrian-friendly environment, improve district dynamism, make tourists more satisfied, increase commercial activities and rental return. In addition, through the case study and analysis of Zhangzhou ancient city historic district, the paper finds that the positive elements of parking configuration factors are also reflected in a promotion of car owners' commercial activities and diverse consume content. The result plays a positive role in further understanding the optimisation of parking configuration enhance dynamism of historic district.","PeriodicalId":306645,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Design","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116244376","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim is to systematise these data and information, in turn facilitating the decisions made in the design process. The study is based on prior works that demonstrate the importance of a life cycle thinking approach in current design tasks as well as the need for targets to achieve environmental goals. The method employed is founded on the analysis of four environmental labelling programs seeking to unveil their potential and similarities in a given product category. The Environmental Parameter for Ecodesign (EPE) is proposed as a tool and discussed in an example of an architectural component. Despite the limitations, it is possible to conclude that the EPE tool has the potential to expand into other product categories.","PeriodicalId":306645,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Design","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132724900","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Corrugated aluminium sheet is used as the absorber plate. Aluminium pipes of 3/4\" OD are welded under the corrugated sheet to store the PCM. Here, multiple PCMs are used, one with a high melting point and the other one with a lower melting point for the purpose of improving efficiency. A single air pass model in which air moves over the absorber plate is fixed for the study. Air is heated in air heater section which also contains thermal energy storage. Part of the energy obtained in the air heater section is first used to heat and melt the PCM. This heat energy is stored in the PCM and remaining energy in the heated air moves to drying chamber in which the drying process takes place. When the sun's insolation reduces, discharging from the PCM take place. Thus, it reduces the fluctuation in the energy and thus provides a more continuous energy to the system. Glass wool is used as the insulation material. Different parameters for this air heater-dryer have been calculated.","PeriodicalId":306645,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Design","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125471946","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Auxetics have become of interest in engineering, whenever a support instead of a pronounced flexure, of a cellular, therefore lightweight material, is desirable. Structures have been calculated and modelled as chiral with defined geometrical parameters and then applied to concepts with the fabrication of real models using neoprene or generally rubbery material. Indications on the possible sensations of the user are suggested, which provided rationale for likely improved comfort and/or desirability of contact. Limitations of this study in terms of material experience appear the use of a single material as for auxetic properties and the focusing on one single possible auxetic structure, the chiral one. Despite this, this could be considered as a starting point for a possible database of material experience on the use of auxetics. From these considerations, it appears as the use of auxetic structures would lead to a more sustainable scenario for these objects, especially because improved user's experience would extend their duration of life and lead to a lower rate of discarded pieces.","PeriodicalId":306645,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Design","volume":"47 9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132481367","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ERM has been integrated into a product design for sustainability project as part of the design education in the Department of Industrial Design at Middle East Technical University. This paper begins by providing an overview of the generative research approach, explaining its significance and implications for the design process. This will be followed by a presentation of the My Sustainable Mini Oven project, explaining the main design considerations (i.e., engaging design solutions, product maintenance and repair, and effective use of resources). Concurrently, it will present the tools and techniques involved in the ERM method (i.e., interviewing, three-dimensional modelling, and video recording and analysis techniques), its phases (i.e., preparation, session and analysis) and its implications for the development of sustainable design solutions. Finally, conclusions will be drawn and insights will be made into the further development of the ERM method.","PeriodicalId":306645,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Design","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115126238","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The discussion traces the long entrenchment, over several centuries, of assumptions, conventions and outlooks that resulted in a shift in worldview from traditional to modern/late-modern. This shift is not only associated with unprecedented environmental damage, but also with a narrower perspective, a loss of narrative unity, and a loss of meaning. The argument is made that, by focusing on rationalistic, techno-scientific solutions design restricts its contribution to a variety of incremental changes that actually support the continuance of a fundamentally unsustainable system. Instead, design can widen its purview and be a catalyst for more substantive change by restoring a more balanced approach to products and processes in context; thereby contributing to a recovery of narrative unity and meaning.","PeriodicalId":306645,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Design","volume":"95 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126140427","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study uses a thermal conductivity analyser to determine the thermal conductivity and effusivity of standard normal weight masonry sand mortar specimens and several recycled and lightweight aggregates mortar specimens. R-values for each of the test mortars and the control mortar made with masonry sand was calculated with the control having the lowest R-value of the mortars tested. The aim of this paper is to monitor energy saving in the residential buildings of Dubai after applying green roofing techniques. The paper also attempts to provide a thermal analysis after the application of green roofs. A villa in Dubai was chosen as a case study. With the aid of energy simulation software, namely DesignBuilder, as well as manual recording and calculations, the energy savings after applying the green roofing were detected. To that extent, the paper draws some recommendations with regard to the types of green roofing that should be used in these particular climatic conditions based on this real experiment that took place over a one year period.","PeriodicalId":306645,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Design","volume":"91 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123760294","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
