When dealing with reliability field data, proper selection of models for time-to-failure data is essential as it affects the expected number of failures. The conventional time-to-failure analysis techniques rely on the major assumption of independent and identically distributed time between failures which is, in fact, not appropriate for all systems. This can lead to erroneous model selection for time-to-failure of a system leading to erroneous estimates of life cycle costs. To overcome this, a framework directed towards proper selection of time-to-failure model and a procedure for life cycle cost analysis is presented. The application of the proposed methodology is illustrated with two case studies by comparing the costs predicted by the proposed model with the costs that are actually experienced. It is found that the model correctly predicts each product’s lif...","PeriodicalId":306645,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Design","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125480205","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Today, the mass production of electronic and electrical products is typically outsourced, and it is apparent that most end up being discarded while still functioning properly. With the intention of raising a critical discussion and promoting a reflection on the issues of electronic waste, product longevity and sustainability, the third year industrial design students in the Department of Industrial Design at the Middle East Technical University (METU) in Turkey undertook an undergraduate project that aimed at re-contextualising the wind-up radio. This paper presents the conclusions and insights gained from that design education project, in which particular emphasis was on incorporating sustainable design considerations (i.e., localisation, integrated scales of design and production, post-use and engaging design) into the idea generation phase of the prod...","PeriodicalId":306645,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Design","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132574495","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

SMEs are particularly plagued with a lack in human, financial and time resources to integrate such aspects to design. In this paper, we propose a gradual approach (short-, medium- and long-term) to implement an eco-design process in SMEs. This process comprises four stages: analysis, sensitisation, eco-design strategy and sustained improvement. A first experimentation, in collaboration with a SME (MulTiroir-Controlec), allowed us to integrate this eco-design process in the development of a new product range of hospital carts. We present the results of the product development as well as an experience feedback on the project; today the company integrates this eco-design approach in its strategy.","PeriodicalId":306645,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Design","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131649181","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Primary research comprised of interviews with consumers to discuss the topic area in relation to three possessions selected for their attachment qualities. The research highlighted how attachment is determined by multiple themes, many of which are circumstantial to consumers' experiences and therefore difficult for designers to control. Findings showed that memories were the most prominent theme of participants' attachment, closely followed by pleasure and usability. Enjoyment and pleasure were found to be the primary reason for attachment to newly purchased items, whereas nostalgia was highest for older possessions. Appearance and reliability were found to have considerable influence on participants' attitudes towards replacement.","PeriodicalId":306645,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Design","volume":"25 5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123500697","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, ways of identifying important sustainability considerations already in the early stages of material or product development are of importance. The article is based on action research in a material development project. The article provides a description of activities that were performed in the project in order to guide the material development process to enable more sustainable final products, reflections on the lessons learned from this project, and suggestions to similar projects in the form of an overall process based on team learning with the aim of guiding material development towards more sustainable products. The suggested process emphasises the material or product development team’s need to understand which surrounding world and future-oriented considerations will have significant impacts on the specific product’s sustainability performance.","PeriodicalId":306645,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Design","volume":"17 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129841640","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this study was to test the POE questionnaire for validity and reliability and report the test results as well as those of a confirmatory case study analysis. An online, self-administered questionnaire was completed by 218 occupants of a sustainable office building in the Midwest. Statistical analysis for validity and reliability is reported. Additionally, several notable results were found in the case study: a) overall occupant satisfaction is significantly influenced by lighting/view conditions and furnishings conditions; b) occupant satisfaction with lighting/view conditions was significantly related to visual comfort of lighting; c) occupant satisfaction with furnishings conditions was significantly related to visual privacy. Finally, the questionnaire was found to be valid and reliable, which provides the industry with an instrument to learn more about occupant responses to sustainable buildings.","PeriodicalId":306645,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Design","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125376854","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many organisations are seeking to adapt the life cycle assessment (LCA) method to estimate impact during the design stage and guide the development of sustainable products. In this research, four case studies, involving different types of design scenarios and choices typically faced by designers, were used to study the application of such an approach. The case studies include choice of alternate materials, manufacturing process, design configurations and joining methods. The analysis of these case studies indicated that such an approach can provide valuable insights to designers. However, considerable experience and expertise is required to understand the inaccuracies and limitations introduced by assumptions inherent in the inventory databases as well as by the selected scope of analysis. This paper details the advantages and challenges that designers may encounter in this approach, and suggests directions for further research to enable seamless and effective integration of LCA-based methods in the conventional design process.","PeriodicalId":306645,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Design","volume":"151 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121124132","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This would also allow verifying specific opportunities for development offered by this approach to innovation and revaluation of productive sectors, in particular focusing on small and medium enterprises (SMEs) operating locally. A methodology was followed, which was based upon the integration of different know-how and oriented to promote the glitch of creativity process. Waste used included polystyrene disposable crockery, woodchips, molten rock powder and kaolin, steel plates and glass. This approach may offer results in different contexts, at different scales and in different market sectors, conferring added value to disposed materials, by ‘upcycling’ them. In this respect, it is also proposed that other applications, involving either the same materials or other wastes that are difficult to be collected and recycled are developed in the future.","PeriodicalId":306645,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Design","volume":"162 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134362797","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this regard, the article offers an integrative and systemic approach to sustainable design. Instead of focussing on objects, a user-centred perspective is adopted. A sustainable design of products and services requires the integration of production-orientated (efficiency and consistency) and consumption-orientated (sufficiency) strategies. The article introduces the concept of an indicator that is capable of comprehending a lifecycle-wide analysis of products and that favours the integration of existing sustainability strategies. The goal is not to design sustainable products but rather to design systems that manage to foster sustainable lifestyles. The article illustrates the usability of the introduced concept by showing examples of strategic integrative thinking in sustainable design from the Sustainable Summer Schools.1","PeriodicalId":306645,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Design","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128585111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research addresses the challenges of sustainability, including localisation of design and production, as well as substantive values and deeper, enduring understandings of human meaning. The approach iteratively combines scholarly inquiry, reasoned argument and the development of theory with speculative explorations to create tangible design propositions that both inform and exemplify the theoretical concepts. These propositional objects, together with the theoretical and philosophical ideas that informed their development, are an example of creative ‘academic-practice’. The direction taken recognises that the proliferation of product functionality via microprocessor-based technologies effectively frees ‘form’ to address other areas of significance – taking form beyond function to express deeper human meanings.","PeriodicalId":306645,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainable Design","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129669162","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
