Our digital modeling in 3D aims to visualize Neolithic crafted skulls found in the Near East for their preservation and study taking into account both the possibilities of skull deformation in vivo as well as crafting them postmortem. Decapitation and burying or caching human skulls is met already in Palaeolithic contexts. Postmortem cranial crafting by drilling and carving, or modelling with plaster and asphalt using human skulls as basis was practiced in the Near East during the Pre-Pottery Neolithic and Late Neolithic period. The first examples of plastered human skulls were discovered at Jericho in the 1950s, then belonging to Jordan, after which to Israel and now to the Palestinian territories. Similar skulls were later found in various sites in the Near East. The examples digitally reconstructed here include skulls from Göbekli Tepe and Köşk Höyük found in Turkey, from the cave at Nahal Hemar at the Dead Sea in the Judean mountains of Israel and skulls from Jericho in the Palestinian territories. Both drawings and photographs were used in digitally reconstructing the skulls in 3D. The Blender software allowed us to sculpt the complex shape of the skull from a base mesh. Graphic Processing Unit (GPU) rendering sped up rendering thanks to Nvidia graphics cards. UV mapping was carried out for importing the texture. The visualization enabled us to make further anthropological observations. Beside the generally acknowledged Neolithic \"skull cult\" we also wish briefly to discuss other reasons for the phenomena and practices.\u0000","PeriodicalId":30633,"journal":{"name":"ISPRS Annals of the Photogrammetry Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89752837","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the advancement of technology, lowered cost in hardware and widely available development tools, more and more educators across different disciplines have used virtual reality as a mean to enhance their teaching. The hit of the pandemic has also speeded up the adoption of virtual reality in education where face-to-face classes and practicals are suspended/cancelled. Virtual Reality as a tool to facilitate teaching and learning has created a new way for learners to experience the materials instead of receiving information passively through books and videos. Traverse survey is one of the main topics in surveying, it is a method used for control survey through establishing a series of points that are linked together by straight lines to form a framework. Traversing involves setting a total station and prism targets at points along the traverse line to do observations. Measurements of angles and distances are taken for the calculation of the points’ coordinates using trigonometry. This paper illustrates using freely available tools to develop a virtual reality program for doing traverse survey, the program is used in an assignment as a virtual fieldwork tool for students to learn traverse surveying at home and anywhere with a computer.\u0000","PeriodicalId":30633,"journal":{"name":"ISPRS Annals of the Photogrammetry Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences","volume":"68 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89145977","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The challenges brought by a growing number of large-scale land development projects (e.g., Northern Metropolis, Lantau Tomorrow, and related infrastructures) in Hong Kong must be met by innovative land acquisition planning and processes. A recent quick win solution to land supply for Works projects has been in trial commissioning the provisional draft land resumption plan preparations and related survey works from the government to consultants, specifically the Authorized Land Surveyor (ALS) in the private sector. The industry therefore must consider the necessary and diverse sources of expertise available, and the existing land surveying technical resources that will render support to such new initiatives. Collaboration is called for between the spheres of public sector, education, and works industry to successfully move the use of cadastral survey for land management forwards, bridging the gap between lands and works practices for efficient processing of Works projects, and smart city development of Hong Kong.This paper will examine the new approach of professional surveying that private practicing ALSs bring, and why the overall number of ALS and engineering surveyors in the construction industry is growing so slowly. It will additionally compare Hong Kong's practice with that of the mainland China, Singapore, and the UK to grasp global learning points. The paper recommends the establishment of a Cadastral Survey Lab (CSL) firstly to explore the policy implementation of a sound cadastral system. The processing of lot boundary determination by ALS is reviewed. The regulatory roles of the Land Survey Authority (LSA) are requested in approving new land boundary plans; this both replaces the Demarcation District (DD) Sheet boundary and improves land boundary records. Secondly, the CSL can serve as a coordinating body in curating various kinds of land records from diverse sources, and aids the research and knowledge management of cadastral survey, land law, land tenure, land registration systems, land boundary record keeping, problematic lot boundary determination, etc. These topics can be considered in the refining geomatics education curriculum, and furthermore developed into guidance notes for geomatics survey practitioners.The evolution of the traditional land surveying profession into the geomatics services has become a recent international trend that is growing in popularity in the survey profession. Combining geo-spatial data from the planning and design stages, alongside the use of standardised survey data processing in project implementation and asset management, would encourage data sharing, avoid duplicate efforts, and facilitate the formation of a digital city. The operation of the China-Europe railways has facilitated economic development and improved regional connectivity along the route, while impacting the environment. Effective monitoring of the environmental status along the railway is necessary to promote the sustainable development of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Existing remote sensing-based monitoring methods depend on local prior knowledge and model selection, resulting in insufficient specificity when applying to the China-Europe railways, which have a large spatial extent and complex ground variability across nations. Financed by the 2020 China-CEEC Joint Education Project of Institutions of Higher Education, we combined the preponderant research fields of the Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture (BUCEA) and the University of Novi Sad (UNS) and established an environmental monitoring process based on artificial intelligence and remote sensing techniques. More specifically, an online annotating platform and deep learning based classification procedure were established, followed by environmental analysis conducted with comprehensive indicators and a difference-in-difference method. Our results provide 10 years of monitoring data on the environmental status of the China-Europe Railway Express, based on which, the impacts of the economic corridors on the local environment before & after the establishment were evaluated specifically.
