As one of the most characteristic components of ancient Chinese architecture, Dougong has an important significance in the history of ancient Chinese architecture, but with the passage of time, wooden building components are prone to decay and missing, so it is particularly important to digitally retain the Dougong. In order to realize the Dougong component segmentation, this paper proposes a super voxel-based Dougong component primitive segmentation method, which is divided into two parts: firstly, super voxelizing the Dougong point cloud data, and secondly, realizing the Dougong component primitive segmentation by using multi-geometric constrained region growth algorithm. In order to verify the effectiveness of the method, this paper selects three main Dougong types of the Qing Dynasty, including pingshenke, jiaoke, zhutouke, for experimental validation, and the results show that the combination of super voxel and regional growth algorithm can effectively extract the geometric primitive surface of the Dougong components with high extraction efficiency and good adaptability, which can be prepared for the subsequent knowledge of Dougong construction method to achieve component segmentation.\u0000

The work presented here is part of the widespread digitisation process that is affecting the world of architecture and cultural heritage. The text reports part of the activities carried out on the Castello Sforzesco in Milan, in collaboration with its Superintendence bodies. This work proposes an innovative way to draft, in a digital environment, 3D constraint maps, capable of describing and protecting the complex system of structures in that area, especially in the subsoil. The activity began with the creation of a georeferenced 3D model of all the existing architectural elements in the analyzed area of the Castle. The work was carried out on the northwest corner of the fortress, the area between the Torre della Colubrina and the Porta del Soccorso. The modeling activity was based both on data obtained from surveys and historical documentation describing structures that are no longer visible. From the 3D model, it was then possible to obtain all useful data to draw up constraint maps in GIS (Geographic Information System) environment. This latter allows multiple interactions both with the normal surface cartographic information (Topographic Database and others) and with the multitude of datasets available for managing the territory and its subsystems. The constraints consider a ‘safety’ offset, applied in all three directions. These maps describe the various three-dimensional areas, referring to the different structures present in the subsoil, within which it is recommended to operate with extreme caution, in relation to the position and conformation of the same identified assets.\u0000

Heritage Building Information Modelling (HBIM) can be a valuable tool for the efficient management of cultural heritage. Adopting Building Information Modelling (BIM) for heritage architecture requires investing in training for modelling as-found elements, establishing standards for modelling, and developing accessible libraries of parametric assets. Parametric families of the Doric Order column and entablature were modelled in Autodesk Revit using standard measurements of the Doric Order, with parameters assigned to each element to remain adjustable and adapt to any as found project. These families were modelled with the ability to adjust all geometry to any point cloud with the intention of uploading the Revit files to an accessible online database, the Multimedia Inventory of Architectural Heritage (MIAH), developed by Carleton Immersive Media Studio (CIMS). The integration of these families into an online platform for any heritage professional to download and modify intends to ease the modelling process for future projects, as well as standardize the families used in future projects. To define the process of collecting data for as-found modelling, this paper outlines the documentation and data processing for two archaeological sites on the islands of Rhodes and Kos in Greece. To assist future HBIM library users in understanding the families, the process of converting point cloud to HBIM is demonstrated through the development of a parametric HBIM of the Temple of Hephaestus, located in Athens, Greece.

LiDAR and photogrammetry are common mechanisms for the documentation of cultural heritage sites. Their outputs provide foundational primary sources for research and important engineering decisions contributing to the on-going conservation of sites and structures. Unfortunately, due to the complex nature of these data, they are rarely shared with stakeholders in their full forms. Raw data is routinely transferred to portable hard drives and forgotten at a project’s end. Digital heritage documentation, often acquired with great effort and cost, is at risk of loss (UNESCO 2003). When these data are shared, they are rarely presented or formatted in ways which enable their widespread re-use. As processing tools improve at a rapid pace, and offer new pipelines for improved reconstruction and fusion with additional data sources, it is important to preserve the data in a way which maintains all functionality and interoperability between processing platforms. It's not enough to share data or to simply make them "available." Data must be technologically and intellectually intelligible (and useful). A new system framework is required to ensure their integrity and wide-spread utility, and to democratize these data for re-use by the diverse communities of stakeholders with whose purposes fall outside the narrow scopes of a 3D documentation project’s original goals. In this paper we present OpenHeritage3D.org as a platform and framework for an open visual archive seeking to provide authoritative and democratized access to site-scale lidar and photogrammetry through data curation, file-sharing, and web-visualization systems with granular segmentation and data conversion capabilities.\u0000

To solve the problem that Dougong has various shapes and complex structures, the corresponding solutions are proposed in this paper. Our proposed method mainly consist of two parts. At first, the surface primitives were segmented using the machine learning (Random Forest). In this stage, the features including the curvature, normas and other features based on covariance matrix. Then, the knowledge from the construction rules were applied to label the segmented surface primitives into correct categories. The corresponding height constraint, concave-convex constraint, and symmetry constraint are proposed as the judgment conditions to mark the geometric elements belonging to the same dougong component and complete the point cloud segmentation of the dougong component. Deep Learning has been pivotal in many real-world applications (e.g., autonomous driving, medicine and retail). With the wide availability of consumer-grade depth sensors, acquiring 3D data has become more affordable and effective, and many 3D datasets are currently publicly available. 3D data provides a great opportunity for a better comprehension of the surrounding environment for machines. There is a growing need for innovative methods for the treatment and analysis of point clouds and for their classification. The complex hidden layers, which are at the basis of deep neural networks (DNNs), make it difficult to interpret these models, that up to a few years ago DNNs were considered and treated as black box operators. Still, with their increasing popularity, making them explainable and interpretable has become mandatory. A lot of efforts were devoted to developing an Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) framework for explaining DNNs decisions with 2D data, while only a few studies have attempted to investigate the explainability of 3D DNNs and, even more, heritage scenarios. To overcome these limitations, it was proposed the BubblEX framework: a novel multimodal fusion framework to learn the 3D point features. In our work, BubblEX has been exploited to understand the decisions taken by DNNs for heritage point clouds. The approach has been applied to a Digital Cultural Heritage Dataset, which is publicly available: the ArCH (Architectural Cultural Heritage) Dataset.\u0000

Guqin is the Chinese oldest musical instrument and intangible cultural heritage. The Tang Dynasty was the most prosperous in Chinese history, with a flourishing culture. One of the Guqin manufactured by Master Lei Wei, a notable Guqin maker in the Tang Dynasty, was recognized as a reference standard instrument and is kept in the Palace Museum in Beijing. Stradivari, a well-known Italian violin maker, has created and improved violins that no one else can surpass. Triangulation laser and CT/CBCT Scanner-Based 3D modelling data-driven analysis of the ancient musical instrument Guqin from the Tang Dynasty has been compared with the Italy Stradivari violin in a historical review perspective in this paper. After delving into the wood, spatial structure, and other aspects of the Stradivari violin, it has been discovered that the wood, paint, and inner cavity design used by the two masters during their respective heydays are strikingly similar, revealing their shared experience in creating ancient musical instruments in their countries. The bass bar of a Stradivari violin is meant to be transplanted into a Chinese Guqin prototype and get the conclusion that the timbre of the Guqin can be improved according to MATLAB spectrum analysis. In the context of cultural heritage documentation and conservation, an accurate 3D model is essential to properly describe an artifact of historical relevance and provide the expert user with verified metric data. In this paper we propose a workflow aimed at estimating errors in the image orientation steps, which is useful for improving the accuracy of the sparse cloud (composed of Tie Points). Some parameters provided as input to the processing software, often overlooked by the user in favour of the default ones, are analysed. Specifically, tests are carried out using the commercial software package Agisoft Metashape and involve the analysis of three parameters: (i) the accuracy of measuring the Ground Control Points (GCPs) provided by the user; (ii) the accuracy of the Tie Points (TPs) computed by the software; and (iii) the accuracy of collimating the GCPs on the image. The accuracy of the GCPs is estimated by implementing the formulas of error propagation in MATLAB, considering the three concurring sources of error: the coordinate measurement with the Total Station (TS), the coordinate transformation from the local system to the UTM/ETRF00 System, and the GNSS measurement for estimating the transformation parameters. The transformation parameters are calculated using the Bursa Wolf method. The collimation accuracy of GCPs on the image is estimated by the reprojection error of each single GCPs on the image plane. The accuracy of the GCPs will be estimated by the standard error per unit weight (SEUW), accurate GCPs being expected to have a SEUW value close to unity. SEUW is also the overall indicator for estimating the accuracy of the TPS cloud because it is influenced, in different ways, by all three parameters analysed. Creating cave maps is an essential part of cave research. Traditional cartographic efforts are extremely time consuming and subjective, motivating the development of new techniques using terrestrial lidar scanners and mobile lidar systems. However, processing the large point clouds from these scanners to produce detailed, yet manageable “maps” remains a challenge. In this work, we present a methodology for synthesizing a basemap representing the cave floor from large scale point clouds, based on a case study of a SLAM-based lidar data acquisition from a cave system in the archaeological site of Las Cuevas, Belize. In 4 days of fieldwork, the 335 m length of the cave system was scanned, resulting in a point cloud of 4.1 billion points, with 1.6 billion points classified as part of the cave floor. This point cloud was processed to produce a basemap that can be used in GIS, where natural and anthropogenic features are clearly visible and can be traced to create accurate 2D maps similar to traditional cartography.\u0000
