This paper describes the Charter on the preservation of the digital heritage and it also presents the five main printing technologies, FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling), SLA (Stereo Lithography Apparatus), DLP (Digital Light Processing), LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) and SLS (selective laser sintering) technology. Besides, It presents a methodology to process the restoration of a porcelain bowl through three-dimensional scanning and FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) and LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) 3D printing technologies. First, the porcelain bowl is scanned with the scanner. Then the modeling software is used to reconstruct the missing part that the bowl presents. Finally, the reconstructed 3D fragment model is printed, completed and chromatically reintegrated. In order to optimize this restoration method to achieve the best visual effect similar to the appearance of the porcelain bowl, different printing materials are used for testing. This type of restoration method can improve the final appearance of the intervened area, minimize the operation of the object and can also make it be shaped quickly and precisely.\u0000","PeriodicalId":30633,"journal":{"name":"ISPRS Annals of the Photogrammetry Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences","volume":"17 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83758522","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the era of digital twins, high-definition 3D point clouds of cultural relics, such as the bronze drums of ancient Southeast Asia and China, are increasingly available as digital heritage. This study applies an automatic hierarchical clustering method to compare and cluster 14 unstructured 3D models of frogs on drums based on the dissimilarity metric of the minimum error from 2,000 iterations of global registration. Furthermore, this study compares two forms of 3D presentation: surface points and 3D shape skeletons. The experimental results on 14 high-definition frogs showed that four groups – three-legged with baby, four-legged with baby, three-legged without baby, and four-legged without baby – were consistently (TPR = 0.857) detected, regardless of the 3D presentation using point clouds or shape skeletons. Both basic surface points and advanced shape skeleton effectively clustered 3D heritage details for heritage digital twins and advanced heritage documentation. The findings also imply that geospatial analytics using either surface 3D point clouds or skeleton can shed light on unsupervised learning and quantitative understanding of unstructured point clouds of numerous cultural heritages.\u0000","PeriodicalId":30633,"journal":{"name":"ISPRS Annals of the Photogrammetry Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences","volume":"36 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84533934","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The article focuses on modern methods of mining activity documentation and visualization. The development of technologies that allow us to display 3D models are many in recent years, from web portals, augmented reality using smartphones or tablets to virtual reality glasses. These technologies give us a whole new way of looking at and viewing 3D models. In this study, we will use most of the available options to visualize mining activities in the UNESCO-protected Ore Mountains. Each of these technologies needs differently prepared data. Because each of these technologies have different limits, we need to find these limits and modify the 3D models. The ZEB Revo laser scanner was used for data acquisition, which uses SLAM technology and is much more suitable for such areas than conventional terrestrial scanners, with which the work is lengthy and not nearly as efficient, and not the least of which eliminates the time-consuming post-scan work of merging scans. Especially when using scanning for mining, where there is not quite enough to go around, manually splicing scans is a nightmare, and automatic post-production merging is also often problematic.\u0000","PeriodicalId":30633,"journal":{"name":"ISPRS Annals of the Photogrammetry Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences","volume":"62 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83031057","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Salt weathering is one of the most detrimental agents in the deterioration of historic wall paintings. Unfortunately, it is most noticeable once it reaches the surface, and the damage has already been done. Its elusive nature and its integration into the historic structures make it difficult to accurately detect soluble salts at the sub surfaces of wall painting non-destructively. Detailed detection in a delicate artifact such as wall paintings requires custom methodology. The study's case study is the wall painting in Herodium. The wall paintings were severely damaged by salt weathering. Although great efforts were invested in restoring and protecting the paintings their state is still unstable. This study offers a new perspective on the matter utilizing the adaption of industrial protocols based on active Infrared thermography (IRT) with data processing via thermographic signal reconstruction (TSR). The study's primary goal was to optimize the inspection methodology and assist the conservation process with knowledge of soluble salt hazards hidden at the subsurface.\u0000","PeriodicalId":30633,"journal":{"name":"ISPRS Annals of the Photogrammetry Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences","volume":"80 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91223640","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The use of multiple digital technologies has addressed conventional exhibition display issues, improving public experience, and aiding in the understanding of historical changes in cultural heritage. This facilitates community sharing and international promotion. Furthermore, the promotion of novel digital application scenarios can encourage the growth of cultural consumption and the digital creativity industry. Beijing's Central Axis is a remarkable and well-preserved example of a traditional central axis in China's capital cities. It is comprised of numerous building complexes and archaeological sites located within the old city. This axis was first constructed in the 13th century, shaped in the 16th century, and continues to thrive today while remaining open to the future. By assessing its dynamic \"growth\" and \"living\" value, we have devised an innovative interpretation system plan that includes Augmented Reality Tours, immersive exhibitions in historical buildings, online exhibitions, and a series of public activities. The pilot project, implemented at the Drum Tower located at the northern end of the Central Axis, involved careful restoration and scientific transformation, accurate heritage documentation, and digital reconstruction. Digital creativity empowered and activated the historical building, achieving a comprehensive balance of conservation, utilization, and economics. The exhibition has garnered favorable feedback, particularly from the younger generation, who appreciate the combination of ancient cultural heritage themes and modern digital immersive displays.\u0000","PeriodicalId":30633,"journal":{"name":"ISPRS Annals of the Photogrammetry Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences","volume":"204 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72417772","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The majority of buildings are existing and have not been constructed in a BIM process. That is why, the modelling of existing buildings becomes a major issue. Beyond the questions of maintenance or renovation with the promise of reducing the environmental impact, their modelling is of interest for documentation and valorisation. But today, while the acquisition techniques are significantly progressing, with the use of efficient laser scanners, the modelling remains manual and very time consuming. The literature is not empty of proposals to automate the process. Nevertheless, many studies are based on strict architectural hypotheses or restricted to unoccupied buildings free of furniture. This strongly limits their application field. In response to these limitations, this paper presents an innovative method retaining only verticality of walls as assumptions. It is based on occupancy and density image analysis. Tested on a wide variety of buildings, this method is very promising with very few classifications errors. Furthermore, the process is successful with dynamic laser scanning data, in cluttered environments, and applied on buildings with a non-Manhattan-World scheme.\u0000","PeriodicalId":30633,"journal":{"name":"ISPRS Annals of the Photogrammetry Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences","volume":"259 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79609796","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In recent years, LiDAR has seen an increased application in the field of archaeological documentation, as it allows for rapid acquisition of spatially dense and accurate point clouds. The three-dimensional survey and monitoring of ongoing excavations is a topic of particular interest for archaeological documentation, due to the importance of recording stratigraphy during the destructive and irreversible process of the excavation, and the challenges of obtaining complete photorealistic digital representations of the archaeological terrain. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of obtaining in real time high-quality digital models and maps of the stratigraphy via laser scanning, aiming to establish a replicable methodology for archaeological practice. Optimal acquisition and processing scenarios are explored for both terrestrial and drone-mounted LiDAR. Cultural Heritage (CH) management software represents virtual information in various ways aiming either at usability and long-term preservation or interactivity and immersiveness. A single web-based framework that couples the organization of geospatial, multimedia and relational data with 4D visualization, Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) is presented in this paper (https://meteora.topo.auth.gr/5dmeteora.php). It comprises the 5dMeteora platform and the Content Management System (CMS) for uploading, processing, publishing and updating its content. The 5dMeteora platform integrates a responsive 3D viewer of high-resolution models in the basis of 3DHOP (3D Heritage Online Platform) and Nexus.js multi-resolution library. It offers data retrieval and interpretation mechanisms through navigation tools, clickable geometries in the 3D scene, named hotspots, and semantic organization of metadata. Its content and interactive services are differentiated, based on the scientific specialty or the field of interest of the users. To achieve the sense of spatial presence, VR and AR viewports are designed to give a clearer understanding of spatial bounds and context of 3D CH assets. The proposed CMS allows dynamic content management, automation of 3DHOP’s operations regarding 3D data uploading and hotspots defining, real-time preview of the 3D scene as well as extensibility at all levels (e.g., new data types). It is built upon a MySQL Database Management System and developed with PHP scripting, backend JavaScript and Ajax controllers as well as front-end web languages. The database maintains and manages the entities of every type of data supported by the platform, while encryption methods guarantee data confidentiality and integrity. The presented work is the first valid attempt of open-source software that automates the dissemination of 3D and 2D content for customized eXtented Reality (XR) experiences and reaches multiple levels of interactivity for different users (experts, non-experts). As a key role in reflecting local diversity and identity, cultural heritage is of significant value to the living and well-being of a region and its people. Additionally, cultural heritage education serves to further enrich the values, core literacy, and cultural identity of future decision-makers. Even though countries are paying increased attention to these various aspects of education and research on cultural heritage obstacles to engagement exist. The obstacles addressed here include passive or minimal participation, and the lack of research surrounding methods for engaging adolescents with cultural heritage. However, the Dunhuang Academy's animated short, The Deer and the Snitch, featured on WeChat’s mini-programs, presents an example of novel methods used to educate and engage the adolescent demographic with cultural heritage through new media technology. Set in the Dunhuang Mogao Caves, the world’s oldest, richest, and most exquisite site for Buddhist art, this animated drama breathes life into the Dunhuang frescoes through its professional use of new media technology and strengthens their philosophical themes of truth, kindness, and beauty. With increased accessibility due to the mobile nature of WeChat mini programs, combined with an integrated mechanism for viewer participation, this animated drama constructs a bridge between individuals and cultural heritage.
