The degradation of Cultural Heritage sites is one of the biggest challenges in modern societies and it is becoming a pressing issue in many countries. Our Cultural Heritage is degrading faster today than any time in the past. Countries as Italy, boast a significant part of the heritage buildings and structures all over the world, typically made of stone. These countries are increasingly challenged to properly maintain their important legacy while keeping maintenance low-costs for the preservation. The degradation of historic masonry structures can be manifested in different ways that can be focused from different perspectives and disciplines. The present study-case deals with the Ponari Nymphaeum, a Roman building dated to the 1st century B.C., that has been the object of a study begun in 2010. The site is located on the slopes of Montecassino, in the Southern Lazio and it has been the object of a survey and monitoring begun in 2010, and updated to 2019, aimed at documenting the structural and architectural degradation of the site due to the negligence and the climate change by using the combined approach of the analytical and digital photogrammetry. The results show the efficiency of the proposed methodology to identify not only the existing state of degradation of the site, but also a useful approach to preserve and to reconstruct the missing and damaged parts that can be reproducted with high accuracy.\u0000

Towards revealing the potential of satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Interferometry (InSAR) for efficient detection and monitoring of Cultural Heritage (CH) encouraging resilient built CH, this study is devoted to the validation of InSAR-derived vertical displacements with a full-resolution perspective taking advantage of high-precision geodetic levelling measurements. Considering the Cathedral of Como, northern Italy, as the case study, two different Persistent Scatterer Interferometry (PSI) techniques have been applied to Cosmo-SkyMed high-resolution SAR images acquired in both ascending and descending orbit tacks within the time interval of 2010–2012. Besides using the simplified approach for obtaining the vertical displacement velocity from Line of Sight (LOS) velocity, a weighted, localized, multi-track Vertical Displacement Extraction (VDE) approach is proposed and evaluated, which uses the technical outcome of Differential InSAR (DInSAR) and spatial information. The results, using a proper PSI technique, showed that the accuracy level of extracted vertical displacement velocities in a full-resolution application is ca. 0.6 [mm/year] with a dense concentration of InSAR-Levelling absolute errors lower than 0.3 [mm/year] which are reliable and reasonable levels based on the employed validation framework in this study. Also, the weighted localized VDE can significantly decrease the InSAR-Levelling errors, adding to the reliability of the InSAR application for CH monitoring and condition assessment in practice.\u0000

The oral interview is an essential component of heritage study fieldwork. However, due to the individual memory bias, quick verification of the content's validity about the built environment is required. This paper aims to provide an efficient method for verifying the authenticity of oral interviews by combining architectural heritage data with digital analysis techniques and using spatial analysis as evidence. The method is based on the image pre-processing of existing architectural drawings, the creation of multiple planes and models through parametric variation factors matrix, and the generation of analysis images using daylight analysis algorithms. The Pix2Pix model is also introduced as a basis for tagging the planes and the images of the analysis results according to its principles. Learning by pairing the labeled images enables the computer to generate image analysis based on a given plane figure for fast analysis in the built environment. Following this, the authenticity of the oral interview’s content can be quickly determined. This paper examines the industrial heritage of the Puqi Textile General Factory, which was formed under the idea of rapid construction during the Third Front construction, using the factory ’s built environment and related oral content as the basis for analysis and verification. The findings did not satisfy the poor working conditions described in the oral interviews. Therefore, the authenticity of the oral content is doubtful and requires further verification.\u0000

Since the conservation of living heritage sites such as historic towns and traditional villages often involves the coordination of multiple interests, the modern socio-economic development of heritage sites and the dominant participatory nature of local heritage communities become the main conflicts in practice. Using a combination of literature research and field cases, this paper firstly compares the history of the theoretical conservation approach to living heritage and explains its core concepts and basic methods. Secondly, it analyses the application and effectiveness of the community co-creation model in living heritage sites using the case of the ancient city of Pingyao in Shanxi Province, China. Heritage co-creation is a complex undertaking that involves the formation of cultural clusters and the collaborative creation of cultural value. However, implementing such co-creation is challenging due to various impact factors, and current technological approaches do not enable the formation of cultural clusters and co-creation simultaneously. To address this issue, this paper proposes a solution that incorporates the concept of meta-design with Web 3.0 enabling technologies to build a regenerative system that does not impose restrictions on the target audience and can be reseeded through user-generated content (UGC). The paper describes the method, process, and structure of a preliminary mock-up for co-creation, which includes a forum for communication and formation of cultural clusters, and a learning management system(LMS) that guides design-driven creation and facilitates the use of the co-design toolkits.\u0000

As a carrier of history, culture, religion and art, grotto temples are an important part of China's splendid cultural heritage. Among them, there are many grotto statues with similar shapes and scattered on the grotto temples, which have high artistic value. It is of great significance to classify them. The existing classification methods of grotto temple statues are mainly based on traditional manual classification and machine learning classification, which often consumes a lot of labor costs and time costs. To solve these problems, this paper improves the PointNet network and applies it to the classification of statues in grottoes, which greatly improves the automation of the classification of statues. And the point cloud data set of the grotto temple is made for experiment. The results show that the overall accuracy of the method in this paper reaches 89.73%, the average intersection and combination ratio reaches 68.9%, and the accuracy is increased by 5.47% and 4.3% respectively compared with the random forest classification method. Although numerous participatory methods and assessments have been tested in the western context, the community participation practice is still limited in China, a developing country. In addition, due to the diversity of cultural, historical, economic, and social backgrounds, Chinese community participation differs from similar international approaches. Hence it is critical to explore how engaging Chinese people with their own heritage properties can foster stewardship, multi-stakeholder connection, and support policy and strategy making. It is very challenging to preserve the character of historic urban landscapes because they change over time in a rapidly developing urban context. Research on revealing people's stories and preferences concerning the Chinese historic urban landscape in their visiting and living experience is needed to address this concern directly. The study applies a novel approach to explore public attitudes based on the fusion of social media data, land use data and other information. It examines the spatial patterns of public responses towards the government-led urban heritage conservation projects in the historic city centre of Harbin, China, in sixteen months (2021–2022). The Byzantine Empire has bequeathed to us a rich legacy of Christian churches, many of which possess historical and cultural significance. Unfortunately, the majority of these structures are currently undergoing a process of decay, having not received adequate preservation efforts. Moreover, the absence of collaboration between researchers in the various fields, each with their own focus on the study of Byzantine churches, presents a pressing need for dialogue and a collective response from these researchers. The region of Laconia, located in the south of Greece, is particularly in need of immediate attention, given the abundance of churches located therein. To address these challenges, the authors propose a novel approach involving the documentation of these churches in a digital format through the presentation of 3D models as scholarly editions that incorporate all available data sets in a multimedia format. This paper delineates several requisite specifications for 3D scholarly editions, which hold the key to solving the twin problems faced by Byzantine churches, namely, their protection and the scarcity of interdisciplinary collaboration amongst researchers. With 3D scholarly editions based on multimedia resources and adequate information management, it will be possible to facilitate collaboration and research between various fields of Byzantine studies, and beyond. Vectorization of orthoimages of Cultural Heritage sites requires a considerable amount of time and constant supervision by qualified professionals. In addition, this 2D architectural drawing creation requires expert knowledge for appropriate interpretation of the orthoimages. In this paper, the use of conditional adversarial networks as a solution to orthoimage-to-drawing translation problems is proposed. The presented work exploits a state of the art conditional Generative Adversarial Network with a Markovian discriminator and modifies it using a ResNet fully convolutional network as generator in order to deliver reliable and accurate 2D architectural drawings in a binary image format. Following the 2D drawing image generation, their automated conversion into vector files is performed through a vectorization function, giving also the possibility to edit and scale the edges. Experimental results over two different Cultural Heritage test sites demonstrates that this approach is highly effective at synthesising 2D architectural drawings from orthoimages in great detail and reliability by learning the interpretation performed by the expert architects during the vectorization process.\u0000

The visualization work presented here seeks an answer to one of the most persistant problems of our cultural heritage: to make visible the original splendour of the lost Temple of Artemis, one of the seven wonders of the world whose glory could not be surpassed in the Classical Age by any other building. Unfortunately, neither the discovery of the temple, which was found after many years of searching, nor the excavations carried out in the following 150 years were enough to completely remove the veil of mystery from this enigmatic temple, and a completely factual and academically accepted reconstruction has not been possible until today. In this article, it has been tried to give an answer to how this world-wonder temple looked. The goal is to recreate the Temple of Artemis in virtual space using tools and methods at the forefront of digital technology. The effort to bring visibility to the temple provides an opportunity to keep this unique work of our cultural heritage alive in our memories and to increase its accessibility and awareness by providing digital access to the structure that is no longer physically accessible.
