A qualitative content analysis methodology was employed in conducting the research. Methods from Ure (1971) and Halliday (1985) were used to analyze the lexical density, and Flesch’s (1948) Reading Ease Score and Grade Level were used to evaluate the readability of the news articles. The findings showed that The New York Times news articles had lexical densities that were higher than 50%, significantly lower readability scores than 50, and grade levels greater than 12.The percentages of lexical density were higher than Ure’s (1971) minimum score for written texts. The readability score also revealed that the news articles required a high level of reading comprehension and were best understood by readers who were at least 18 years old or at least in college. The study came to the conclusion that The New York Times is one of the most trustworthy and reputable news sources.","PeriodicalId":305947,"journal":{"name":"ELLITE: Journal of English Language, Literature, and Teaching","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121543053","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Preliminary studies revealed that tertiary vocational students (subjects are 66 Polibatam students) find it challenging to speak in English, especially when making presentations in English (77, 3%), which is a reasonably frequent activity in the industry. Therefore, developing alternative learning media is essential for students. It can be a source of learning independently, as well as an alternative teaching media for lecturers. This research aims to create and analyze motion graphics videos to support speaking practice aimed at vocational higher students. The content is about introducing English presentation and making a successful presentation. The method used in this study is R and D that started from identification or need analysis, design, development of the product, evaluation and final product. The field testing carried out is the alpha testing and beta testing. The developers themselves will conduct alpha testing which involved three media reviewers. Meanwhile, for beta testing, the motion graphic was tested to the English lecturer as the content reviewers and the students as the target to use this product. The result shows that the product was excellent to be used as alternative media for speaking practice even to be used by the lecturer as the media for asynchronous class.  ","PeriodicalId":305947,"journal":{"name":"ELLITE: Journal of English Language, Literature, and Teaching","volume":"83 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122443823","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Learning process takes place online. The condition of students at senior high school which I studied during the covid 19 pandemic with online learning and its obstacles, affected the formal invitation writing skill scores of students who were still below the student learning achievement target which is 76%-85%. Therefore, it is important for teachers to create situations that will make it easier for students to write and reduce boredom. To overcome problems and barriers to online learning with the media of google classroom and zoom meetings during the covid 19 pandemic, researchers need to provide a process and product-oriented learning model that is Project Based Learning; a student-cantered learning model and it was considered the most suitable for indirect learning during the covid 19 pandemic. This research method uses Class Action Research. The reason for using it is to improve the learning process problems that arise encountered in learning. The results showed that students’ learning achievement has improved from cycle I cycle I (68.42%) to cycle II (78.95%) and the average score achieved increased from 69.47 in cycle 1 becomes 77, 37 in cycle 2. And the output data from the paired sample t-test is known to have a significance value (2-tailed) 0.000 < 0.05, so it can be concluded that there is a significant difference in learning outcomes from cycle 1 to cycle 2.","PeriodicalId":305947,"journal":{"name":"ELLITE: Journal of English Language, Literature, and Teaching","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132848701","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study deals with the interference of Indonesian to English found in student essays in the Writing class. The purpose of this study is to uncover cases of language interference carried out by students. The research data is in the form of sentences containing grammatical errors caused by Indonesian interference to English. Data were collected from 35 essays written by students participating in The Writing Course 03 (Class A) from August – December 2021 in the English Literature Department - Faculty of Humanities - Jember University. Once collected, the data are classified and analyzed using an error analysis framework and a sociolinguistic perspective. The results show that there are nine types of grammatical interference which comprise: plural noun forms, the conformity of the subject-verb form, tenses, word forms, prepositions, article, conjunctions,  word pairs        (mismatch), passive form. These grammatical errors prove the interference of Indonesian to English because students are still very strongly influenced by the rules of their native language (Indonesian) when they write essays in English.","PeriodicalId":305947,"journal":{"name":"ELLITE: Journal of English Language, Literature, and Teaching","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132054438","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, modern social studies have re-examined the symptoms of hysteria and determined that what has been termed “hysteria” can actually be connected to psychological symptoms related to a woman’s failure to obey the prescribed social gender norms or adhere to societal gender images. Hence, hysteria may be a subconscious or unconscious, though always ineffective, attempt to fight against oppressive gender expectations. In order to escape the pressure from prescribed gender norms or patriarchal norms, women may retreat into a world of insanity, using hysteria to release their anger or anxiety. In order to further illustrate how hysteria fights against the existing cultural structure, this study uses Wuthering Heights as an example of hysteria as a consequence of the perspectives of gender, family structures, and social class, as well as the interactive effects of these dimensions. To achieve this goal, the study applies the theories and criticisms of gender psychology, gender criticism, and binary gender opposition to analyze the symptoms of female hysteria in literature and to demonstrate how women, forced to conform to prescribed gender images, use hysteria as a defense mechanism to express their anger toward gender subjectivity; it also aims to further deconstruct the androcentric society and discourses based on gender binary opposition.","PeriodicalId":305947,"journal":{"name":"ELLITE: Journal of English Language, Literature, and Teaching","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115360173","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This diversity of opinions will eventually participate in developing research in the literary world. Lyrics are a medium for an author to convey the message he wants to convey in a more free and elegant form. This study aims to describe the reader's perception of the messages and values contained in the lyrics of Rebel's Girl from Bikini Kill, Beyonce from Partition, and God Is a Woman from Ariana Grande. This study uses Jauss' theory of the Harapan Horizon where the role of the reader is the main key in conducting an investigation of a literary work. This research is a qualitative descriptive literature research using a questionnaire distributed to readers who are used as respondents. Respondents were selected randomly with the aim of knowing the differences in opinion of each respondent in responding to a literary work. The conclusion of this study is that the various opinions obtained are influenced by the diversity of backgrounds of the respondents such as differences in gender, age, level of education and experience. In addition, there are messages obtained by readers through the lyrics, namely; freedom of speech, feminism, inner beauty, and sex education.","PeriodicalId":305947,"journal":{"name":"ELLITE: Journal of English Language, Literature, and Teaching","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122911332","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
