In adults, pneumococcal infections most often occur as pneumonia, one of the leading causes of hospitalisation in these patients in poland. Multiple factors predispose patients to the severe course of pneumococcal disease, including age, comorbidities, immune disorders and unhealthy behaviours, whereas the accumulation of coexisting conditions leads to risk stacking. therefore, prophylactic vaccinations should be the preferred form of protection against pneumococcal infections in adults, based on high vaccination effectiveness and a relatively low risk of adverse events. Importantly, the current recommendations need to be updated in the context of epidemiological changes and the registration of new conjugate vaccines. this publication aims to present the current knowledge on the prevention of pneumococcal disease among adults and establish practical recommendations on the appropriate immunisation schedules used in poland.","PeriodicalId":305591,"journal":{"name":"Family Medicine & Primary Care Review","volume":"111 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132549959","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mental disorders during pregnancy can be associated with adverse delivery and neonatal outcomes, as well as a higher risk of postpartum mental disorders. Objectives. This study was conducted to determine the factors associated with mental disorders in pregnant women. Material and methods. Using stratified multistage random sampling, 332 participants were selected among pregnant women covered by health centres for prenatal care from April to September 2019 in the west of Iran. After obtaining informed consent from these people, the demographic questionnaire and the Persian version of the Goldberg GHQ-28 questionnaire were completed for them by a trained midwife. The data was analysed in SPSS 22 using descriptive statistics, the t -Test and ANOVA. Results. The mean age and mean gestational age of the 332 pregnant women under study were 29.01 ± 5.44 years and 22.95 ± 8.95 weeks, respectively. About 32.5% ( n = 108) of the women were suspected of having general mental health disorders. The mean scores of the subscales and general mental health disorders were significantly higher in pregnant women with unwanted pregnancy, marital dissatisfaction, a history of domestic violence and in those between 43–47 years of age ( p < 0.05). However, the differences between the mean scores of the disorders were not statistically significant in women with a history of abortion and infertility, gestational age and gender, educational levels and occupation. Conclusions. The results of this study showed that 32.5% of the pregnant women were suspected of having general mental health disorders. Mental health disorders were more common in pregnant women with unwanted pregnancy, marital dissatisfaction, a history of domestic violence in those between 43–47 years of age.","PeriodicalId":305591,"journal":{"name":"Family Medicine & Primary Care Review","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130486401","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The novel coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) has caused significant change in the daily life of humans, as well as in access to medical care. Objectives. We aimed to compare the general characteristics, medical diagnoses and laboratory data of patients referred to the outpatient internal medicine clinics of our institution and to observe relevant factors that correlate with the number of hospital admissions in this population. Material and methods. Patients who visited our outpatient clinics of internal medicine between March 2020 and June 2020 were enrolled. Age, gender, medical diagnoses, number of admissions, cause of admission and laboratory parameters on first admission were recorded. Patients who visited outpatient clinics only once were grouped as group I, and patients admitted more than once were grouped as group II. General characteristics and laboratory data of groups I and II were compared. Results. Patients with cancer were more common in group II compared to group I (p < 000.1). Haemoglobin (Hb) (p = 0.001) was significantly lower, and red cell distribution width (RDW) (p = 0.007) was significantly higher in group II compared to group I. RDW was positively (r = 0.23, p < 0.001) correlated, and Hb inversely (r = -0.19, p < 0.001) correlated, with the number of hospital admissions in the study population. Conclusions.We think that decreased Hb and increased RDW values in patients during the pandemic should alert physicians for possible recurrent hospital admissions in the near future and may promote taking measures to reduce multiple medical admissions. .","PeriodicalId":305591,"journal":{"name":"Family Medicine & Primary Care Review","volume":"160 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115601034","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
