This notion of the garden as a theatre, a stage on which landscape and growth are performed, is explored by taking a closer look, spotting those places that merit attention in the vast metropolitan territory. His wisdom is not only written in his books, but also has been implemented through his architectural projects, revealing a specific composition of a spiritual language. A qualitative study is used to reveal Mangunwijaya’s architectural principles, by using the tracing method to highlight the structural elements of his urban churches. A typological investigation is accompanied by retracing Mangunwijaya’s drawing, where its spatial composition and form are emphasized through points and lines. Currently, the residential buildings contribute approximately 37.5% to significant energy consumption and carbon emissions, which mainly used for cooling. This research aims to study the house layout arrangement to minimise cooling loads and further reduce energy consumption. Energy efficiency analysis is performed by comparing the cooling load and total energy consumption from variations of the hypothetical design of detached or semi-detached housing layouts commonly built in Indonesia. The calculation of cooling loads and energy consumption is performed by simulation in Energy Plus 8.4 with Jakarta weather data. The results show that the arrangement of the house layout may reduce the cooling load up to 24%. Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is one part of thermal comfort parametric often suggested in any building assessment for its role to affect health and comfort. IAQ is influenced by physical factors (temperature, air humidity and air velocity) and chemical factors (in the form of substances in the air). Traditional buildings in Indonesia, has long since consider IAQ in its passive design approach, one of them is in Baileo. This paper reports an investigation of IAQ in coastal Baileo in West Seram, Maluku. This quantitative research is conducted in method comparative analysis method. This paper discusses the relation between IAQ in Baileo to building formation and materials selection. This study aims to conduct a comparison of two different groups of people on their opinion of earthquake-resistant housing variables and actions to increase the quality of their house. For supporting public awareness of earthquake-resistant houses, the purpose also determines the latent variables of earthquake-resistant houses and actions from the public for improving the quality of the residential building. This quantitative research begins by collecting the earthquake-resistant house attributes through journal reviews. This study used a closed-ended questionnaire to collect data on public experiences of earthquake disasters. For data analysis, it used correlation analysis to determine the level of relationship between two variables and utilizes factor analysis to reduce the variable to a small number of factors. The two groups that have different experiences of earthquakes tend to have similar opinions about the characteristics of earthquake-resistant houses and the actions for improving the quality of residential buildings. The five factors of the earthquake-resistant housing are safe structural construction, fixed architectural elements, open accessibility, lightweight-ductile material, and simple floor plan. Horizontal Light Pipe (HLP) is one of the light transport systems that can deliver daylight to these areas. The research aim was to explain and evaluate the effect of HLP’s opening distribution area on daylight performance at deep plan-private office space. The research method was experimental with simulation as a tool. Daylight level and distribution of the base case, HLP with an opening distribution area of 6.6 m2 were compared with the case, HLP with an opening distribution area of 3.41 m2. The results showed that both cases distributed daylight uniformly. A 50% reduction of HLP’s opening distribution area, from 6.6 m2 to 3.41 m2 improved the average Daylight Factor as big as 6.42%. Dekker","doi":"10.7480/SPOOL.2020.1.5483","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.7480/SPOOL.2020.1.5483","url":null,"abstract":"In the contemporary metropolitan landscape of Rotterdam, the open landscape spaces that once surrounded the city have been reduced to components in a hybrid field. When the polders were still expansive, with an omnipresent horizon, and big skies, they were depicted extensively by the Dutch landscape painter Henk Chabot (1894-1949). Chabot is the Rotterdam painter of an oeuvre that is associated with angular, realistic expressionism of many layers of paint in hard colours, who painted heavily emphasised skies over poor countryside, or monumental portraits of refugees or farmers. For fifteen years, he lived and worked in a studio by the river Rotte. Now, only a relic of the farmland where he lived remains: an interstice between motorways, recreation parks, and suburbs that seemed to be overlooked in the frenzy of urban planning processes. The reason this interstice still exists is that it has been reserved for a future motorway for the last 30 years, and in the not-so-distant future will become the tunnel entrance for the new A16 motorway. As a left-over space, the terrain seems non-descript. However, it does have the implicit characteristics of a ‘landscape theatre’: introducing the processes and the scale of landscape as self-evident elements of the city, and heralding the open polder landscape twenty minutes away. It borrows its physical boundaries from the Rotte river dyke, the heemtuin (botanical garden) adjacent to the Ommoord apartment blocks, the access road to Ommoord, the industrial estate, and residential area in Terbregge. Such a “borrowed boundary” can be seen as a defining trait of the landscape theatre. This paper aimed to understand the position of architecture in culture. The method used was correlation and interpretation. Correlation method connected architectural forms with cultural forms, while interpretation method provided an interpretation of the relationship between the two, and the position of architecture in culture. The results showed that architecture as part of culture had almost the same form between the two. Architectural term included forms, functions, meanings, and ideas, while cultural term included physical culture, behavior patterns or social, value, and ideas systems. This explanatory study was aimed at identifying ILS at selected university which preferred by students as reading space and their relation to students’ responses. Students tend to choose library ILS but non-library ILS also have potential in supporting the responses to be achieved. Students were found to have better comprehension, a good mood, and to read longer in library ILS. Meanwhile, students found it easier to pay attention and felt an increased desire to engage in discussions in non-library ILS, and tended to visit these more often. At this case study, library ILS tends to be used for individual activities, while non-library ILS are used for collaborative or group activities. However, rooftops are often ignored. In low-rise to high-rise buildings’ rooftop, there are leftover places exposed to solar heat radiation all day. Some rooftop places are equipped with polymer thermal roof insulation, and some are even without outer thermal insulation. The research aims to find a solution to diminish the horizontal thermal radiation by using eco-friendly material, pumice, as an outer thermal insulation. Exploiting method was used on one roof model as a conventional rooftop (without outer insulation), and another as a modified rooftop model covered with pumice. Couple HOBO data logger U12-012 temperature sensors were used to measure rooftop surface temperatures and room model temperatures. Results show that the thermal radiation were blocked efficiently: 26 o C on pumice covered rooftop.
