The total area under carp farms (ponds) registered by the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia (SORS) in the last fourteen years has varied between 6,192 and 8,940 ha, while under the area under trout farms was between 33,255 m2 and 81,411 m2. Total fish production over the last fourteen years varied between 5,070 tons, recorded in 2017 and 8,195 tons of market fish, recorded in 2010. Fish production is dominated by common carp and rainbow trout (about 90% of total production). In addition to these two species, several other species are cultured at carp farms, such as catfish, pikeperch, pike, silver carp, bighead carp, grass carp, Prussian carp and tench. In trout farms, additional cultured species are usually brook trout, huchen and grayling, while cultured fish species in RAS systems are sterlet and Russian sturgeon.","PeriodicalId":30435,"journal":{"name":"Veterinarski Glasnik","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68266361","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Intensification of production increases the severity and frequency of infectious disease outbreaks, and so requires significant effort to prevent and control disease. Because of the global crisis of bacterial resistance to antibiotics, the use of antibiotics in aquaculture is increasingly subjected to strict control and regulatory measures, leading to potential misuse. The lack of availability of approved veterinary medical products for use in aquaculture, combined with the risk of drug resistance development and antibiotic residues in fish flesh or water, support the development of preventive actions, including vaccines. However, the diversity of species and aquaculture production methods, including epidemiological units and their links, results in economic challenges for commercial vaccine development and authorization. As a possible response to the increasing demand for less antibiotic use in fish farms, and to the expenses associated with novel veterinary product development, there is a need for increased use of safe and effective autogenous vaccines in aquaculture. Regulatory processes for autogenous vaccine production, approval and application should recognize the specificities of epidemiological units and their links in aquatic animal production facilities. The joint efforts of regulatory authorities, producers, and veterinary services to follow veterinary biosecurity principles, including risk analysis, surveillance, and selection/prioritization of pathogens, are essential to provide maximum safety and efficacy of autogenous vaccines as disease prevention and control tools within larger areas, such as compartments and zones, and allow for reductions in antibiotic use.","PeriodicalId":30435,"journal":{"name":"Veterinarski Glasnik","volume":"126 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68267738","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On the basis of clinical and laboratory examinations, and ultrasonographic and radiologic visualizations, provisional and differential diagnoses were made. The Shih Tzu dog described in this report was referred to the Small Animal Hospital of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Sel?uk University, for further work-up after a one-week treatment in a private veterinary clinic. In our hospital, a simple solitary renal cyst was detected and was treated successfully with ultrasound-guided percutaneous drainage. The dog was followed-up during two months? post procedure with renal ultrasonography and four months by phone calls with the owner. The initial complaints such as anorexia and lethargy disappeared after the treatment. The ultrasonographic appearance of the cyst changed from an ovoid anechoic structure into a vague, slightly hyperechoic scar lesion.","PeriodicalId":30435,"journal":{"name":"Veterinarski Glasnik","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68266723","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cyprinids are grown in warm water fish farms, and cold water farms are designed for trout. The great majority (97%) of cyprinid fish farms are located in Vojvodina, Serbia?s northern province. This paper examines how the traditional carp sector was developed during the recent 20- year period in Vojvodina, paying particular attention to the comparison of the number and condition of cyprinid fish farms in that interval according to the available sources. The comparison was made by comparing maps with data on fishponds from 1999 and 2021, and according to the data from the Statistical Office of Serbia. After the analysis of many data from other authors and our study, it is evident that there is a lot of room for improving the production of cyprinid fish in Vojvodina. This is especially because we noticed decreasing trends for two major parameters: the area of fishpond water surfaces in Serbia (from 7,190 ha to 6,299 ha), and the number of ponds in Vojvodina (from 72 to 60), from 1999 to 2021, respectively. On the contrary, the amount of fish produced has increased from 2,409 t in 2002 to 4,761 t in 2021. According to government planning documents, Serbia lacks a national strategy for development of aquaculture production in general, and especially of cyprinid fish species.","PeriodicalId":30435,"journal":{"name":"Veterinarski Glasnik","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68267234","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To facilitate their rapid and reliable identification, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS), was applied to Acinetobacter from fish. The aims of the study were, thus, to identify and profile the Acinetobacter species from tissues of fish living in a vulnerable environment impacted by wastewaters, and to assess the potential of MALDI-TOF MS as a method for discriminating these acinetobacters. Fish were sampled from waterways impacted by the activity of a wastewater treatment plant. Samples of gills, spleen, kidney and liver were streaked onto general-purpose media to purity. The profiling and identification of acinetobacters was conducted with MALDI-TOF MS, with the samples prepared by ethanol/formic acid extraction.The identified acinetobacters were retrieved from gills (68.96 %), kidney (13.79 %), liver (10.34 %), and spleen (6.89 %). The Acinetobacter species isolated from all tested fish tissues were A. johnsonii (79.31 %), A. pittii (10.34 %), A. tandoii (3.44 %), A. guilouiae (3.44 %), and A. gerneri (3.44 %). Highly probable and probable species identifications were obtained for 48.27 % of all acinetobacters tested, indicating fully reliable identification. MALDI?TOF MS gave excellent identification and profiling results for piscine Acinetobacter species from the wastewater-affected waterways. It is a recommendable technique for future Acinetobacter species discrimination, as accurate and rapid identification of these bacteria is critical in both environmental pollution management and human/veterinary clinical diagnostics.","PeriodicalId":30435,"journal":{"name":"Veterinarski Glasnik","volume":"59 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68267353","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is known that alternative and complementary medicine techniques have become popular in the treatment of nerve damage in recent years. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the effectiveness of electroacupuncture in acute and chronic radial and ulnar nerve injuries. Electromyographic measurements were made to evaluate the effectiveness of electroacupuncture. In the study, the rabbits were divided into four groups namely acute nerve injury (ANI) group, chronic nerve injury (CNI) group, positive control (PC) group and negative control (NC) group. In the ANI, CNI and PC groups, damage was created on the nervus radialis and nervus ulnaris by applying pressure for 60 seconds using a hemostatic forceps under anesthesia. No damage was created in the NC group. Fifteen sessions of electroacupuncture were applied to the rabbits in the ANI, CNI, and NC groups every other day using LI-4, LI-10, LR-3, and ST-36 electroacupuncture points. Electroacupuncture was not applied to the rabbits in the PC group. Electromyographic examinations of both forelimbs of rabbits were performed during electroacupuncture applications. In the study, rabbits in the ANI group were measured at first amplitudes of 9.78 ? 1.66, and final amplitudes of 18.94 ? 1.83 (p ? 0.01). Rabbits in the CNI group were measured at first amplitudes of 11.34 ? 1.52, and final amplitudes of 16.03 ? 1.35 ( p ? 0.01). However, no statistically significant difference was found between the first and last latency values for both groups of rabbits. As a result, it was determined that electroacupuncture is an effective treatment method for both acute and chronic nerve injuries, as well as being more effective in acute cases than in chronic cases.","PeriodicalId":30435,"journal":{"name":"Veterinarski Glasnik","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68267436","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The concentration of melatonin follows light-dark cycles with significantly higher concentrations during darkness. The authors present the importance of the melatonin protein hormone by focusing on the reproductive processes in domestic sheep. In their literature review, they report that sheep melatonin levels show daily and seasonal rhythms. In sheep as a seasonal breeder and short-day animal species, seasonal increases in melatonin production stimulate sexual activity. The authors describe innovative possibilities for regulating melatonin levels in sheep production. The use of exogenous melatonin brings forward the expression of the sexual cycle. It increases the fertility rate, the number of lambs born, and the chances of survival of twin lambs. Melatonin is a neuroprotection compound against cerebral hypoxia and the development of inflammatory processes in the growing foetus and the newborn lamb.","PeriodicalId":30435,"journal":{"name":"Veterinarski Glasnik","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68267532","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, in the previous two decades, shellfish output in the European Union has been dropping. This review provides information about shellfish aquaculture in Montenegro, in Boka Kotorska Bay, where most farms belong to the group of small farms. Shellfish production in this bay is constantly increasing. Thus, with minor deviations, the production of shellfish increased from 156 tonnes, as was produced in 2012, to 246 tonnes produced in 2020. However, despite the constant growth of production, statistical data indicate that every year a large amount of shellfish is imported, and there is a need for greater production in the country. The shellfish production capacity in Montenegro is still lower than expected, despite the great potential for development. Aquaculture?s development potential is in the areas of increasing production, modernising existing farms, automating production, strengthening the competitiveness and efficiency of the sector, introducing new species, better linking aquaculture with tourism and processing, marine spatial planning, promoting aquaculture products and branding products.","PeriodicalId":30435,"journal":{"name":"Veterinarski Glasnik","volume":"14 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68267622","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The positive effect of Agaricus bisporus mushroom extract on the survival and immunity of Nosema-infected bees has been reported recently. The effect could be achieved by stimulating the expression of immune-related genes, but also by suppressing nosemosis. The aim of this work was to determine the effect of A. bisporus extract on the oxidative status of bees infected with N. ceranae. In a cage experiment on newly hatched bees, the effect of aqueous extract of champignon (A. bisporus, strain A15) was investigated. Six groups were formed: three groups were infected and received A. bisporus extract through food at different times (days 1, 3, and 6 after hatching), one group received the extract but was not infected (treatment control), one was only infected with Nosema (positive control) and one was neither infected nor received the extract (negative control). The effects were examined on samples taken on days 7 and 15 of the study. The activities of the antioxidant enzymes catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) and the concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA) were determined. In comparison to the positive control, the enzyme activities and MDA concentrations were significantly lower in the groups fed with the mushroom extract supplement. In the negative control, the level of oxidative stress was lower than in the positive control. In comparison with the other groups, the values mostly did not differ significantly. The oxidative status of bees infected with N. ceranae was significantly better if they were fed with the A. bisporus extract.","PeriodicalId":30435,"journal":{"name":"Veterinarski Glasnik","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68267317","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
