{"title":"Monitoring the Scientific Productivity of Higher Education Institutions in Turkey: A Review of Current State and Suggestions","authors":"Muhammet Damar","doi":"10.5961/jhes.2021.426","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5961/jhes.2021.426","url":null,"abstract":"In the rapidly developing and changing world, higher education institutions have taken their place among the institutions struggling in global competition conditions. With the educational processes, the opportunities they provide to their students, employees, researchers and society, and the values they create with these stakeholders, these institutions are in an effort to progress in the ranking steps. There are many university ranking systems adopted on international platforms, and the common point of these ranking systems is the priorities they give to the criteria for scientific productivity. At this point, authorities who want to move their institutions to upper levels need to closely and effectively monitor the relevant performance indicators.This study, which presents research in this context, reveals how institutions monitor their scientific productivity levels and how much they adopt implementation components and policies in well-developed institutions. Data obtained from one-to-one interviews with a representative sample group accompanied by a form and from online announcement channels of institutions are summarized and presented. In the light of the data, all situations that cause problems to occur are made more visible and solutions are suggested. General findings show that although performance monitoring processes differ from each other, they exist in every institution, but some important performance dimensions cannot be monitored by all institutions in an efficient way. Thus, the current study examined the current situation, needed workforce qualifications, and career services for preparing the future workforce to the world of work in terms of Industry 4.0 in Turkey. Using a phenomenological approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with the academicians who have a theoretical and experiential background about the relevant topic in Gaziantep which is the one of important industrial towns of Turkey. The results indicated a lack of infrastructure, research-development, awareness and vision, and the need for education in Industry 4.0 as well as some occupations that will be gone and will grow. According to cluster analysis, two dimensions of the needed qualifications of the workforce were yielded, indicating domain competencies and soft and transferable skills. {"title":"Designing and evaluating a faculty development program on english language needs: a mixed methods approach","authors":"A. Dincer, H. Considering the necessity of English in academia, this study aimed to determine the academics’ language needs and to test the effectiveness of an academic development training designed based on the identified needs. Then, a multiphase mixed methods design was adopted to answer the aims. Accordingly, a needs analysis survey regarding the English language requirements of university faculties was conducted across 105 faculty members in Erzincan Binali Yıldırım University, a Turkish state university. In addition, 35 out of the members completed an intensive three-week English conversation and academic writing program designed in accordance with the language needs of the academics. The changes between the pre-test and post-test scores for the academics were investigated, with a focus on the willingness to communicate in English, and perceived self-efficacies in English speaking and writing. Further, the academics’ opinions on the training program were collected with open-ended interview questions at the conclusion of the course. The needs analysis survey results indicated that the majority of academics believe their English is either at a beginner or elementary level, and that they require English to fulfil several academic purposes. The findings relating to the effectiveness of the training program showed significant differences in the academics’ pretest and post-test scores, in favor of the post-test scores, regarding willingness to communicate, and perceived self-efficacies in speaking and writing. The findings from the open-ended questions about the program confirmed the effectiveness of the course and highlighted the necessity to improve foreign language proficiency levels in university faculties through similar language training programs. This descriptive study was carried out with 208 nursing students at Namık Kemal University. Data were collected through the use of Turkish version of the Vocational Choices in Entering Nursing Scale, and the student introduction form. 83.2% of the students are females. 69.7% of the students said that they chose nursing with their own will and 10.6% declared that they want to change their career. It was found that vocational congruency subscale score mean was 62.91±16.23 and survival motivation subscale score mean was 45.17±17.10. The item ‘I always wanted to help people’ had the highest point score (84,03±18,39) among all items; the item ‘I can’t do anything other than nursing’ had the lowest point score (20.19±24.92) among all items. As a country where English is taught as a foreign language, Turkey has set its own teacher competencies in an att empt to respond to changes in educational moves and to be in harmony with internationally acknowledged standards. Th is study aims to find out and compare the competency levels of pre-service and in-service English teachers in Turkey in terms of the generic and field-specific teacher competencies set by Turkish Ministry of National Education. 366 pre-service and 84 in-service English teachers participated in this study. Quantitative research method was adopted to reach a large number of participants and to increase the generalizability of the findings. Th e participants completed a survey including two diff erent self-assessment forms. Th e results off er striking insights into teacher education in Turkey. Th e findings show that a high majority of the pre-service participants (n: 338, 92.3%) and most of the in-service participants (n: 54, 64.3%) were uninformed about the related competencies set at national level. Bu amaç doğrultusunda Türkiye’nin doğusunda yer alan bir üniversitede uzaktan eğitim ile ders veren beş öğretim elemanı ve bu üniversitede örgün eğitim görüp uzaktan eğitimle ders almakta olan altı öğrenci ile görüşmeler yapılmıştır. Çalışmada, örgün eğitim içerisindeki uzaktan eğitim uygulamalarında karşılaşılan problemleri daha bütünsel ve derinlemesine incelemek amaçlandığından nitel araştırma desenlerinden ‘durum çalışması’ yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Veriler içerik analizi ile incelenmiştir. Yapılan analizler sonucunda öğrencilerden elde edilen bulgular dört kategori altında 20 kod oluştururken öğretim elemanlarından elde edilen bulgular dört kategori altında 25 kod oluşturmuştur. Yapılan çalışmanın özellikle uzaktan eğitime geçmeyi düşünen ve yeni geçmiş olan eğitim kurumlarına yol göstereceği, bu konuda yaşanabilecek sıkıntılara yönelik önlemler almalarına imkân vereceği düşünülmektedir.
