The method used is classroom activity especially in student’s responses. The data collected through observation and interview. The observation is about the learning process between teacher and students in the use of reading storybook on children’s vocabulary mastery and the interview is about the teacher’s point of view about the use of reading storybook on children’s vocabulary mastery. The research used descriptive analysis. The process to analyze the data is by observing the student and teacher learning process in the class when the teacher reading storybook through learning process recording done. There are five aspects used to know the student’s responses in the classroom; academic aspects, aspects of thoughts, skill aspects, attitude aspects, and works of habit. Harpain","doi":"10.36448/BL.V2I2.1779","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.36448/BL.V2I2.1779","url":null,"abstract":"Figurative language is a non-literal meaning of sentences or words in order to make attractive languages in written text based on the theory of Aristotle Therefore, this research aims to analyze what kinds of figurative language in Halsey’s selected song which are Colors, The Feeling, Without Me, Haunting, Ghost, Walls Could Talk, and Nightmare. Moreover, the contextual meaning of the selected song’s lyrics is analyzed based on the theory of Halliday. Contextual meaning has three types which are field, tenor, and mode by observing through reading the lyrics from genius.com. The Field and Mode of the songs refer to the culture of the composer lived in, and Tenor is symbol of participation of life objects. The result is in classified and percentage the data. Thus, it concluded and calculated that the seven selected songs of Halsey have 2 items or 13% of allegory, 1 or 6% of conceit, 5 or 31% of hyperbole, 4 or 25% of irony, 2 or 13% of litotes, 8 or 20% of metaphor, 2 or 13% of onomatopoeia, 4 or 25% of personification, 6 or 38% of rhetorical question, 11 or 69% of simile, and 3 or 9% of symbol. The type of this study is a descriptive qualitative method. The sources of data used the utterances taken from the transcription of pedicab drivers in Prawirotaman area of Yogyakarta. The research instruments were the recorder to record the utterances produced by pedicab drivers in Prawirotaman area of Yogyakarta and the headset was used to hear the utterances produced by pedicab drivers. The technique that was used to analyze the data is a discourse analysis. This study shows that (1) based on the analysis, it can be concluded that there were four types illocutionary speech acts. They were commissive, directive, expressive, and representative. Based on the analysis, there were 4 utterances of commissive (30.7%), 3 utterances of directive (23.1%), 3 utterances of expressive (23.1%), and 3 utterances of representative (23.1%). (2) Based on the result of analysis, the types of illocutionary speech acts of pedicab drivers’ utterances used by pedicap drivers in Prawirotaman area of Yogyakarta were commissive, directive, expressive, and representative. In commisive speech act, the pedicab drivers promised with the tourists that they would change their performed in order to get attentions from the other people. In directive, the pedicab driver used directives of request and command. The directive of request can be seen when the pedicab driver asked the tourist to give his command about bakpia as a special food from Yogyakarta. The directive of command can be seen when the tourists gave command that Bakpia is good and delicious. . In expressive, the pedicab driver often expressed the truth of the expressed proposition in his conversation. It happened when pedicab driver tried to give explanations about the specific location. It is to find out the student’s perception about narrow reading and narrow listening whether those methods are effective or not to be used in speaking class, and whether those methods could help them in improving their speaking ability or not. The population of this research were the third semester students of English Department Universitas Bandar Lampung. The sample of this research was taken by using purposive sampling method. The instruments used for collecting the data were observation, questionnaire, and interview. The data analysis of this research was qualitative. The result of this research show that the students’ were very interested in learning and they gave a positive attitude and good response when those methods were implemented in their classes. From the questionnaire and the interview result, it showes that mostly they said that those methods can help them to speak as well as to understand what they should say when they should tell their topic in front of the class. Based on the research, it was found that the use of narrow reading and narrow listening in speaking class was effective and it was very useful and help the students in improving their speaking skill as well as help the students in achieving their goal in learning speaking skill.
