For each image, its color-spatial information is compactly captured by a set of color signatures and an image signature. During the image retrieval process, the color and image signatures of the query image and those of the database images are compared to determine the set of candidate images to be retrieved. In particular our similarity measure takes into account contributions of colors that are perceptually similar and the weightage on the object colors. To speed up the retrieval process, we also propose a filtering mechanism that employs a simple similarity measure to prune away irrelevant images quickly, before computing the more complex similarity measure on potential candidate images. We implemented the proposed method and conducted an experimental study on an image database consisting of 12,000 images. Our results show the retrieval effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed color-spatial approach.","PeriodicalId":302885,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE International Conference on Multimedia Computing and Systems","volume":"134 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123410308","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The framework includes: (1) an object-oriented document architecture with a consistent interface for different media types; (2) a transition model between multimedia objects founded on content-based static links for a temporal media, and content/time-based dynamic links for temporal media; and (3) intrinsic support for content-based access which requires a reduced amount of indexing. A prototype system has been implemented to verify the feasibility of the paradigm. They also present an innovative algorithm for editing of MPEG program and transport streams, and for inserting special effects in the compressed domain itself. Finally they present an architecture for a Visual Asset Management System (VAMS) which enhances the functionality of the editing application to provide a complete video archival and management system.","PeriodicalId":302885,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE International Conference on Multimedia Computing and Systems","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130925660","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Current scheduling practice, as typified by UNIX System V Release 4, lacks the necessary information and interfaces to meet these requirements. To address this problem, we have created the SMART (Scheduler for Multimedia And Real-Time) interface. It explicitly accounts for application-specific time constraints and provides dynamic feedback from the scheduler to applications to allow them to adapt to the system loading condition. This paper describes the design of the interface and its implementation in the Solaris UNIX operating system to provide an effective SVR4-conformant full featured environment for supporting multimedia applications.","PeriodicalId":302885,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE International Conference on Multimedia Computing and Systems","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116517839","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The new technique is based on the quadtree representation of images and vector quantization. We use a mean-removal technique to separate the means image and the difference image. The difference image is then encoded as a breadth first traversal of the quadtree corresponding to the image. Vector quantization is then used to compress the quadtree nodes based on the spatial locality of the quadtree data. The number of bits allocated to each node varies in each level according to its priority. We prove that this encoding is time-efficient to generate. We also show its ability to tolerate error and to conceal it. Moreover, we test our encoding technique according to its ability to scale down gracefully. The new encoding technique proved to perform well in all aspects.","PeriodicalId":302885,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE International Conference on Multimedia Computing and Systems","volume":"271 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121979858","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They have, however, not been a very dynamic part of telecom networks, planned, as they were, for the long-term and usually with limited technological innovation. These changing and access networks are increasingly coming into focus for technological innovation and as platforms for the provision of new advanced services in a competitive business environment. New fibre, radio and copper based technologies, in combination with flexible multiplexers and management tools, provide new possibilities for the improved quality of services, cost reduction and provisioning of new advanced services. In order to fully benefit from these possibilities, for extending and upgrading existing, as well as building completely new access networks, a flexible service-independent network architecture and access network system are required. Studying different models, one target network architecture is suggested in this paper. The models are oriented towards the provision of services for voice, data and video transmission as the most interesting services for subscribers at the moment. The purpose of our paper is to provide effective representation of images when a pixel-level original image is automatically or manually transformed into its iconic image containing meaningful graphic descriptions, called icon objects. For spatial match representations, the 2D and the 9DLT schemes were proposed to search image results efficiently, satisfying certain spatial relationships (Chang et al., 1987). However, both representation schemes have a critical problem in that they represent each icon object of an original image as a point. As a result, they are not accurate enough to express spatial relationships between objects for handling original images with a complex scene. Therefore, we propose a new spatial match representation scheme to support effective content-based image retrieval.","PeriodicalId":302885,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE International Conference on Multimedia Computing and Systems","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127252171","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
