It consists of a VideoText data model based on free text annotations associated with logical video segments and a corresponding query language. Traditional database techniques are inadequate for exploiting queries on unstructured data like video, supporting temporal queries, and ranking query results according to their relevance to the query. We propose to integrate information retrieval techniques to provide these features and to extend the query language to accommodate interval queries that are useful due to the stream nature of video data. Algorithms are presented to show how user queries are evaluated. Finally, a generic and modular video database architecture based on the VideoText data model is described.","PeriodicalId":302885,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE International Conference on Multimedia Computing and Systems","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115785112","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The authors propose the quasi-static interactive video retrieval (QuIVeR) protocol for this purpose when disk-array based video servers are used. Five variations-QuIVeR-I, QuIVeR-2, QuIVeR-3, QuIVeR-4 and QulVeR-5-are presented. The properties as well as the relative merits and demerits of each protocol ore discussed. The protocols require no buffer at the server and hence, all retrieved segments are immediately transmitted to the appropriate users. The amount of buffer required at each user's set-top box is reduced to two video segments. Guarantees are provided for the avoidance of video starvation as well as buffer overflow, at each user's set-top bet. Numerical results, obtained using data from an MPEG coded \"Star Wars\" video, are provided.","PeriodicalId":302885,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE International Conference on Multimedia Computing and Systems","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115906373","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since the NVOD service needs to be much cheaper than the VOD service, it is important to minimize the server's cost. In this paper, we present a novel video layout strategy for NVOD servers that enforce sequential disk access. Thus, the disk bandwidth is optimally utilized. We define a model that analyzes the storage subsystem behavior, buffer requirements and usage. Strategies that match the actual disk bandwidth to the application bandwidth requirements are developed. Using this layout strategy, each disk can deliver 50% more streams than a VOD system can, and memory buffers are reduced by almost half. Since disks and memory account for a significant portion of the total system cost in a video server, using these strategies significantly reduces server costs. An NVOD server prototype was built that supports both \"broadcast\" and \"on-demand\" service models. Using this prototype, we have demonstrated that our proposed layout strategies are practical.","PeriodicalId":302885,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE International Conference on Multimedia Computing and Systems","volume":"122 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115957759","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to measure the effectiveness of smoothing methods, it is essential that smoothness criteria be first defined on the smoothing output traffic. In this paper, we introduce two simple, yet practical types of traffic for VBR video transmission. For each type, we define three sets of parameters to characterize the traffic smoothness and connection cost, and we show that, in each case, an algorithm exists to optimize all three parameters, given buffer and delay constraints. Further, we establish the relationship between these algorithms and show their effectiveness by applying them to an MPEG video stream.","PeriodicalId":302885,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE International Conference on Multimedia Computing and Systems","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127923903","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The \"interactivity\" of these models is often lacking or unsatisfactory. Interactions, however, form an essential part of an interactive multimedia application (IMAP) and need to be reflected in the modeling and presentation of multimedia scenarios. A complex modeling of interaction elements must cover all possible interactions between a user and a computer as well as those interactions between entities within the computer. The authors introduce the notion of events as they are a promising approach for modeling the various interaction elements in IMAPs. They elaborate on an event classification scheme and according to this, an object oriented model for the different types of events in IMAPs. They also propose a rich composition scheme to allow for the definition of complex interactions. They also present the design of a multimedia DBMS client that manages IMAPs and implements the generation, detection and evaluation and processing of such events in the context of the processing of IMAPs.","PeriodicalId":302885,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE International Conference on Multimedia Computing and Systems","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132830667","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
