Bottlenose dolphin skin samples were obtained from two freshly dead animals during necropsies. The samples were collected from twelve standardized locations across each animal, representing a significant spatial surface area to test among site trace element concentration variability. Skin biopsy samples were analyzed for As, Cd, Cu, Mn, Mo, Pb, Rb, Se, Sr, V and Zn concentrations by CCT-ICP-MS, and Hg concentrations were separately measured by atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS). Wet mass concentrations ranged from > 100 μg/g (Zn) to < 0.0100 μg/g (V, Mo, Cd, and Pb). Relative standard deviations of less than 20% among sample sites were observed for Cu, As, Se, and Hg, demonstrating that deposition of these elements may be tightly regulated in skin tissue. Multifactor mixed-effect analysis of variance analyses (ANOVA) showed significant effects (p < 0.05) longitudinally (dorsal-ventral) for Cu, Mo, Ru, Se, V, and Zn indicating that standardized sample collection sites may be needed for comparative evaluation of these elements between animals, due to relatively heterogeneous distribution in skin.","PeriodicalId":302199,"journal":{"name":"The Open Chemical and Biomedical Methods Journal","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134005766","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This coating may be up to a few hundred microns in thickness and is thought to grow by approximately one micron per thousand years. Recent research has shown that many elements are incorporated into this coating, and, in spite of its slow growth, it may serve as a passive environmental monitor for recent and historical air pollution. To test this hypothesis, small pieces of varnished rock were probed directly by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA- ICPMS). Results were obtained for 11 elements (13 isotopes: 9 Be, 107 Ag, 111 Cd, 118 Sn, 121 Sb, 138 Ba, 184 W, 205 Tl, 206 Pb, 207 Pb, 208 Pb, 232 Th, and 238 U) by magnetic sector ICPMS and for 23 elements (25 isotopes: same as before plus 51 V, 52 Cr, 59 Co, 60 Ni, 65 Cu, 66 Zn, 88 Sr, 98 Mo, 115 In, 133 Cs, 197 Au, and 209 Bi) by quadrupole ICPMS. Varnished rock samples were collected mainly in the fallout patterns of two coal-fired power plants and downwind from the Nevada Test Site (NTS). The LA-ICPMS data indicate that many of the elements commonly found in fly ash from coal-fired power plants (e.g., Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Sn, Sb, Tl and Pb) were highly enriched in the rock coatings in relation to the upper continental crust (UCC). For one of the power plants, where tracer plume studies had been carried out, the highest concentrations in the rock varnish coincide with the peak tracer concentration locations. Thus, these elements in rock varnish hold promise for identifying those geographical regions impacted by nearby power plants. Overall, the results indicate that rock varnish can be used as a passive environmental monitor of relatively recent events, and that the trace element fingerprints held in rock varnish may also hold much potential in forensic air pollution studies.","PeriodicalId":302199,"journal":{"name":"The Open Chemical and Biomedical Methods Journal","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124522741","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hence, pharmacological interventions have been shown to improve clinical symptoms of certain pathologies, such as ischemic heart disease. In order to manipulate metabolism, however, one has to be able to correctly measure and know the contribution of a particular pathway to energy production. Many methods have been developed and adapted to a wide range of techniques. Radioactive substrates have been utilized for many laboratories with success. We adapted, from well established radioactive techniques, measurements for glycolysis and glucose oxidation in C2C12 myocytes. We believe that the technique is straightforward and allows the researcher to manipulate according to the needs of the laboratory.","PeriodicalId":302199,"journal":{"name":"The Open Chemical and Biomedical Methods Journal","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127151939","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But this sort of analysis is an important issue from the health point of view. The chiral analyses of these notorious pollutants by capillary electrophoresis have been discussed in this article. This review discusses the new trends and advancements, which have been achieved in the analyses of chiral pollutants using capillary electrophoresis and the state-of-art of their enaniomeric resolution. This article focuses on sample treatment, applications, optimization, detection, mechanisms of chiral resolution and future perspectives of CE in chiral resolution of xenobiotics. Besides, efforts have also been made to suggest the improvement in CE machine to make it ideal for the analyses of chiral xenobiotics at trace levels.","PeriodicalId":302199,"journal":{"name":"The Open Chemical and Biomedical Methods Journal","volume":"104 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128184963","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Also it is an electrochemical technique used in analytical applications and fundamental studies of electrode mechanism. This paper delivers both the underlying theory and the practical guidance needed to apply square wave techniques and also provides a wide collection of data for the description of diverse tendencies that characterize several electrochemical reactions analyzed by SWV.
