High salt intake is an important risk factor for hypertension and its high intake prevents adequate BP control. This study aims to explore the knowledge of salt intake and blood pressure control among hypertensive patients. Data were collected from a cross-sectional sample involving 564 adult hypertensive patients that were followed for at least 3 months prior to recruitment to this study. Data collection comprised interviewer-administered structured questionnaires about demographics, knowledge and practices related to salt, followed by measurement of blood pressure. A majority (92.9%) of the respondents knew that eating too much salt could affect health and less than one-half (40.1%) actually knew that not more than one teaspoon of salt should be consumed daily. Nearly all respondents (516) knew high BP to be a possible consequence of high salt intake. Among those that took a lot of salty food, 87.7% and 78.5% had high systolic BP and diastolic BP respectively. Although the majority of respondents were knowledgeable about the adverse effects of salt, few knew the daily intake recommended value. The higher the dietary salt intake, the higher the chances of having poor BP control. Increased knowledge about recommended salt intake and individual guidance could be important for reducing salt intake in hypertensive patients.","PeriodicalId":301476,"journal":{"name":"Journal of BioMedical Research and Clinical Practice","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134409084","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of this study was to assess anaesthesia used and the outcome of the first 17 cases performed at a young teaching hospital in Nigeria. This was a cross-sectional descriptive study of patients for JRT at Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi, Nigeria from 23/6/2014 to 31/8/2016. Data analyzed from the anaesthetic/surgical records included age, sex, ethnicity, ASA classification, Ficat and Arlet classification of avascular necrosis, Gardens classification of fracture neck of femur, indication/type of surgery, packed cell volume (PCV), anaesthesia type, estimated blood loss, transfusions, duration of surgery and hospital stay, post-operative PCV, pain management, complications and surgical outcome. Results were summarised as means, median and percentages using SPSS version 21.0 for Windows®. One-way test of ANOVA was used for statistical significance (p= 0.05). Seventeen patients aged 27-90 years (mean 54.71±19.69). Indications were femoral neck fracture (47%), chronic osteoarthritis (35%), avascular necrosis (18%). The commonest procedure was hemiarthroplasty (41%), total hip replacement (35%), and total knee (24%). All were under regional anaesthesia with spinal (53%) and combined spinal-epidural (47%). Multimodal post-operative analgesia was used. There was no significant difference between pre and post-operative PCV (t = 0.708, p=0.05). Mean duration of hospital stay was 19.44±9.61 days. The outcome was good in all. JRT can be established in a new center with proper planning. Regional anaesthesia with multimodal analgesia is recommended. With relevant surgical skill, patient outcome is good.","PeriodicalId":301476,"journal":{"name":"Journal of BioMedical Research and Clinical Practice","volume":"112 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124269926","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The optimal values of process parameter capable of giving a high yield of biogas were established. A biodigester of 20 liters capacity capable of producing biogas from rural household domestic waste was designed, constructed and used in the study. Its major units are the anaerobic and gas collecting units. The process parameters investigated are the pH of the substrate, detention time and ratio of substrate to water while the yield of biogas was used as performance characteristics. The experiment was based on a central composite rotatable design (CCRD). The results revealed that the highest yield of biogas was obtained from a combination of detention time of 30 days, ratio of substrate to water of 1:1 and pH of 7, while the least yield of biogas of 11 cm3 was obtained from combination of detention time of 30 days, ratio of substrate to water of 1:3 and pH of 2. Numerical optimization carried out with the goal of maximizing the biogas yield revealed optimum values of detention time of 40 days, the ratio of substrate and water used; 1:2 and pH of 6.71 for biogas of 771.77 cm3 with the desirability of 0.9850. The detention time had the highest significant effects on the yield of biogas. The results of this study provided standard input process variables capable of yielding the optimum yield of biogas for the rural community.","PeriodicalId":301476,"journal":{"name":"Journal of BioMedical Research and Clinical Practice","volume":"86 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123533946","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Blood transfusion safety is hindered by the combined prevailing high rate of Transfusion-Transmissible Infections (TTIs) and poor screening techniques. This study determined the rate of Enzyme-Linked Immuno-Sorbent Assay (ELISA) positive reactions to transfusion-transmissible infections in rapid diagnostic test negative family replacement blood units, compared to the first time voluntarily donated blood. We studied records of blood units collected in a tertiary hospital from donors who scaled pre-donation Rapid diagnostic test (RDT) screening for the human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis B and hepatitis C viruses and syphilis and rescreened by ELISA techniques at the National Blood Transfusion Service Centre in Jos, along with units from first-time voluntary blood donors. A total of 19562 blood units; 5945 (30.39%) rapid diagnostic tests negative from a linkage hospital and 13617 (69.61%) from first time voluntary donors were screened by ELISA methods for HIV, HBV, HCV, and syphilis. The overall TTIs detected by ELISA was 16.08%, significantly lower among pre-donation rapid screened family replacement blood donors [495(8.32%)] compared to 2651 (19.47%) among first-time voluntary donors; P=0.0001. Fifty-seven (0.96%) HIV, 166 (2.79%) HBV, 137 (2.31%) HCV and 137 (2.31%) syphilis were still detected respectively by ELISA in the pre-screened negative family replacement blood units. The outcome of ELISA screenings of blood collected from first-time volunteer donors were; 143 (1.05%) HIV, 1,486 (10.91%) HBV, 683 (5.02%) HCV, and 339 (2.49%) syphilis. Blood for transfusion should be screened negative at least with ELISA.","PeriodicalId":301476,"journal":{"name":"Journal of BioMedical Research and Clinical Practice","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125392513","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study was done at the Jos University Teaching Hospital and the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital. Questionnaires on informed consent were administered postoperatively on patients who had undergone elective surgeries under various forms of anaesthesia. The questionnaires sought to find out how much information patients were given about their anaesthesia and how satisfied they were with the information given. 148 patients were interviewed. The mean age was 34.8±13.8 years and the male: female ratio was 1:1.8. Ninety-eight (66.22%) of the procedures were done under general anaesthesia and 50(33.78%) under regional anaesthesia. 104 (70.27%) were told about the type of anaesthesia to be used. Thirty-eight (25.68%) were not told of the possible side effects. Eighty-six (58.1%) understood the information given. 131(88.51%) believed it was necessary to be given information about the anaesthesia. Postoperative pain management was discussed with 10 (6.76%) of respondents. 104 (70.27%) expressed satisfaction with the information given. Information about anaesthesia was given by residents in anaesthesia in 62.16% of cases, by consultant anaesthetists in 8.78% cases, by surgeons in 10.81% of cases and by house officers and nurses in 14.19% of cases. Majority of patients would like information about their anaesthesia procedures but were inadequately informed. Consent for anaesthesia is often obtained by junior residents who have had little training in this aspect. Training on informed consent should be part of the residency program.","PeriodicalId":301476,"journal":{"name":"Journal of BioMedical Research and Clinical Practice","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128926027","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is known that men play a significant role in the health-seeking behavior of their families. Their involvement in ANC services may lead to improved women’s clinic attendance and maternal health. This descriptive cross-sectional study aimed to determine the proportion of husbands in Maiduguri, North-eastern Nigeria that accompanied their wives to ANC clinic, discussed issues related to pregnancy with them, and also the factors that influenced this role. A multi-stage sampling technique was used to recruit 307adult males, 18 years and above, who had fathered at least one child in the last two years preceding the study. Data were collected using pre-tested researcher-administered questionnaires designed from USAID Compendium of Indicators for Evaluating Reproductive Health Programs, and Health Belief Model of Health Behavioural Change Theory. The data was entered into the IBM SPSS software version 20.0 (New York, 2011). An analysis was performed to identify variables that suggest a significant association using Odds ratio and p-value <0.05 at 95 % confidence interval. Out of the 307 respondents recruited, 225 (73.3 %) were involved in ANC services. Educational status beyond primary school level, Christian faith, having means of transportation and couples making a joint decision on ANC were significant predictors for husband’s involvement in ANC services(P<0.05). Similarly, a good condition of ANC services and spending less than 30 minutes waiting for consultation (P=0.008) were significant health-related predictive factors.","PeriodicalId":301476,"journal":{"name":"Journal of BioMedical Research and Clinical Practice","volume":"99 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122301661","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The biogas was produced by anaerobic microbial degradation of different biodegradable household domestic waste aided by fresh rumen of cow. The anaerobic microbial degradation was carried out in a temperature range of 250C to 320C for a detention time of 39 days for rural biogas production. The results showed the presence of the following bacteria: Bacillus cereus, Sphingobacterium yamdrokense, Clostridium perfringens, Salmonella typhi, Alkaligenes faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Bacillus licheniformis while fungi isolated were Muccor pusillus and Aspergillus flavus. This is mainly due to Unaffordability of this therapy by the great majority of people who are poor and living in rural areas. There is, therefore, the need for effective preventive measures to reduce the progression of patients to End-Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD). This can only be achieved by properly educating the people. This community-based cross-sectional study was conducted on World Kidney day 2018 at Bayara a semi-urban community near Bauchi metropolis. Interviewer-assisted questionnaires were administered to all individuals to assess the knowledge and perception of the participants. A total of 132 individuals completed the questionnaire out of which 81.8% were females. The mean age of the participants was 39.98±12.5 years and a range of 15-65 years. They were analyzed using membrane filtration and pour plate techniques for faecal coliforms count and total coliform count respectively. The total coliform count for all the sources ranged between 0 and 3.28 × 102 with a total mean of 1.11 × 10,2 that of faecal coliform count was found to range between 0 and 92 with a mean total count of 12.58. Among the bacteria isolated and identified, Escherichia coli had the highest total prevalence of 233 (40.31%) and occurring in all the water samples. Klebsiella spp had 99 (17.13%) occurring in all the sources, Salmonella spp 43 (7.44%) occurring in all the sources except for borehole, Pseudomonas species 88 (15.22%) occurring in all the sources, Staphylococcus aureus with 115 (19.90%) occurring in all the sources except for borehole. However, the pHs for all the samples were found to be within the range of 6.51 to 8.0 which are within WHO acceptable range of 6.0 to 8.5. From this study, it is obvious that the water sources from the areas under study are bacteriologically unfit for drinking purposes. These samples with high total coliform count are of concern and calls for urgent and stringent measures aimed at ensuring a safer drinking water for the populace.","PeriodicalId":301476,"journal":{"name":"Journal of BioMedical Research and Clinical Practice","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121334546","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
